So in 40k, is the big bad deep dark secret of the Dark Angels simply that they had some of their brothers turn to chaos?

So in 40k, is the big bad deep dark secret of the Dark Angels simply that they had some of their brothers turn to chaos? Doesn't seem to be such a big deal though with all the chaos space marines out there

Yes. They are still butthurt about their honor getting stained 10k years later. The Lion may or may not be kicking the entire Inner Circle in the ass to do something constructive with their time however. I want to get the DA dex already so I can read about the new policies Grandpa Lion and Papa Az are implementing. I also really want to hear what Luther's up to, I swear he escaped the Rock and has been building "a new legion of Fallen Angels" unmolested for like 3 editions now.

No, the big secret is that they're all gay and afraid of getting canceled since gay not sexually tolerant enough nowadays

You see the thing is lore is 30+ years old.
It started this way, 9 legions loyal(good), 9 traitor(bad), good fight bad simple as. Then DA as only loyal legion have traitors, a lot of traitors. It's a big shame to be only loyalist with traitors who you also can't punish because sucked in warp and scattered in spacetime. This is why big secrecy, autistic hunting and purging all witnesses, despite that there are informations about fallen and fall of caliban in Imperial Palace as of 3rd edition.
Currently all legions had traitor elements, some in bigger numbers, so DA having some traitors don't seem like big deal, but it;s this way because of rectons and expanding heresy. This is why currently DA going full paranoid seem excessive, since every legion had traitors, current chapters have traitorous marines who join CSM all the times etc.
Althou if you want some headcanon explanation to make sense of it, all loyal legions punished their traitorous brothers, DA couldn't because they were scattered through time so now they try to redeem their honour.

I always headcanon'd the paranoia as shock and despair over loosing half the legion to betrayal and also the Lion apparently dying or going missing; they didn't know how to explain it to anyone and rather than bare the shame decided to try to figure things out for themselves.

All imperial factions do this. They're like feudal states.

Yeah, GW have irreparably fricked up the Dark Angels.

What the Secret SHOULD have been is as follows:

    1) It wasn't the Lion sleeping in the Rock, it was Luther.

    2) During the Heresy, the Dark Angels switched sides - BUT the key element is that they switched sides TWICE. The Lion started off loyal but then turned to Chaos, Luther started off as a rebel but then realised what monstrosity his resentments were creating and then re-ratted and returned to support the Emperor.

    3) As invaluable as Luther's redemption was to the loyalist cause, it was politically intolerable to admit that high-profile traitors could come back to the fold or that high-profile heroes could be tarnished, so history was rewritten after the Heresy and Luther was airbrushed from of the loyalist story while the Lion's late-Heresy fall was also edited out. All of Luther's battles in support of the loyalists were rewritten to replace him with the Lion.

    4) The Fallen are still Lutherans, BUT the crucial distinction is that they are specifically Pre-Redemption Lutherans, rebels who refused to go back to the Emperor when Luther turned loyalist. They actively despise their old leader for running back to daddy and not having the stomach to see their independence out.

GW can still pull it back and fix their mistakes with the Dark Angels, though. What they need to do is start suggesting that the Returned Lion isn't who he says he is.

Eventually, it should be revealed that the "Lion" is actually Luther, pretending to be the Lion. He has stolen the Primarch's identity as a personal sacrifice to keep the 'official story' going for the sake of public trust in the Imperial order - even if the Imperium are a bunch of ingrates who destroyed Luther's post-Heresy legacy he realises that what's at stake is still far bigger than his own jealousy at not getting big statues carved for himself.

What a stupid fricking moronic suggestion. Not only does it rape the lore on multiple levels, it would completely retcon the new Lion book.

I swear every complaint thread about 40k lore there is at least one guy pulling out his incredibly stupid headcanon involving double secret traitors/reverse traitors and/or clones.

is worse than "DA were exactly the same as every other loyalist legion except they're really stupid autists about it" that's the official version.

Because it doubles down on the convoluted mess of DA being loyal/traitor. Also, why insist on Luthor being the star of the show? He wasn’t even a full fledged space marine.

But they should be doubling down, that's the entire point of the DA and their Deep Dark Secret to begin with. Take the divided loyalties out and they're just gloomier Black Templars.

Luther is fricking weird. At his Chaotic peak he was almost as strong as the Lion himself. The gods removed their power, but they might give it back. He could also be a cackling old man in a wheelchair. He's probably got some connection to Caliban's World Spirit, if those are a real thing and not bullshit the SW make up. Hell, maybe he's now planetary governor under Vashtorr, running the cursed planet as the man who understands it the best.

What's the deal with Cypher, then? Why does he have BS 10 and that sword which spooped GIrlyman so bad he wouldn't let him meet the Empra? Is he actually Lion?

It's not just that some of them fell. That happened in every legion.

It's that they spent 10000 years covering it up and committing MORE atrocities.
