So is Arkham Origins actually good?

So is Arkham Origins actually good? I've heard it's the worst game in the series but I kind of want to play a Christmas game and I think I could do worse than Bamham combat.

I just finished it myself. It's fine. It ultimately doesn't matter in the long run, but I enjoyed my time with it. The only things that bugged me were not being able to punch Enigma after getting everything and the final "boss fight" not even being a fight.

The final boss is Bane, the segment afterwards with Joker is just your victory playing out.

Bane was the final boss. He even had multiple phases. Joker was just a post-final cutscene story boss. Joker was going one on one with Batman solo. He was pretty much defenseless.

It really really lacks the polish that the other Rocksteady Arkham games have.
The new section of the map is designed like shit.
There is a lot of stupid shit in the game, like locking fast travel points behind the worse Riddler puzzles in the series.

The best way to get what I'm saying it to play Arkham City and Arkham Origins side by side.

    yes it is good.
on release it had a ton of issues + an unnecessary MP mode but now all of those are fixed.
it has some of the best boss fights too albeit it is much smaller than arkaham city. it has like 2 sections of the city + a big ass bridge.

it was a fun asymmetric PvP, reminded me of Dead Space 2's multi

two squads of three goons do shooter objectives while Batman/Robin frick with both teams

The MP still works, though you'll have to download a fix and need to talk with others on Discord to play it since the matchmaking is broken.

It's good. Gameplay is as good as in the other ones, story and atmosphere are great. It mostly got shat on because
    1. It had a buggy release, most of said bugs have been fixed a long time ago
    2. It didn't really bring much new to the franchise, it's basically Arkham City with a bigger map and new story. But AC was great, so I don't really see it as a problem
    3. After a plot twist, Joker is revealed to be the actual main antagonist again. It's not even badly written, but I agree it was disappointing and would much rather have something else this time

It has the best and most numerous detective scenes if you do the murder investigations. I also liked that there was always something to do on the streets due to encounters, informants, blackgate escapees and the fact that you had combat challenges to do. In Arkham Knight there isn't much reason to land and brawl with street punks like that since you don't get anything for it anymore.

It's fine but it's basically just more City with pretty much the same gadgets and a moronic progression system that has no fricking reason to be as moronic as it is
If you are going to play it go to Nexus and download that one savegame that gives you level 10 in the Dark Knight System shit from the start

Imo it actually had the best story, but somehow it also managed to have the worst controls. It felt more clunky somehow.

Different anon here. I finished up the Arkham Asylum story (only on normal, might try a quick run on hard before the next game if I feel like it) and am in the middle of finishing the last two 3-bat challenges (of the battle ones. The predator ones were relatively easy to get 3 bats for aside from the very last one) and the DLC.
So which should I go to next? Origins or City? In terms of release order I know I should go City -> Origins -> Knight, but I see a lot of people saying that Origin is an "inferior version of City" in terms of gameplay.
    What do you think?

      Anonymous

I think going to City is the best option, Origins is a side game but it does take from City in a way that would make it feel weird to play before.

        just do City>Origins>Knight

Alright, thank you anons. By the way, does difficulty level make a difference for the challenges/DLC in Asylum or does it only affect the campaign itself?

          Anonymous

That's a good question, I don't know, I would assume it affects the DLC. Did you grab the Joker playable DLC for Asylum?

I cannot understand people's opinions on this game.
It's the worst one by far. I replayed it last month just because I kept seeing people praise it and wanted to see if maybe the first time I played it a decade ago I got it wrong. I didn't.

It's mediocre. It's unpolished. on PC it still crashes all the fricking time. The bugs are still there. The map sucks, it's empty, the riddler trophies lack polish and are mostly bad or just copied right from Arkham City.
The movement is bad, this game came out AFTER Arkham City, and yet they couldn't even just copy over the combat system which was already perfect in that game and just add to it. Nope, they made it an unpolished, buggy mess. You can just feel the lack of polish when you play especially when you come to this game literally right after finishing City like I did. It's just not there. The design of the city isn't good. There's too many dead ends and other empty pointless areas.

Speaking of which, my god is the movement around the city sluggish. If fast travel didn't exist you would want to blow your brains out trying to glide around this poorly designed city. Here's another thing that irks me, like just grappling around and diving, why does it feel so fricking awful where in city it feels so refined? The grapple boost; doesn't exist in this game and the map is twice the size of City, meaning you're stuck grappling around slow as frick. Also, you can't even grapple to the top of many buildings and some are just too high and you can't grapple up them.

The story sucks, whoa it's Joker again, shocking. Even Joker's big sections in the game are such a letdown, even aesthetically they're ugly, the entire hotel sequence for example. Just feels completely low effort phoned in garbage. The Bane plot too, fricking awful.

    Knight > City > Asylum >>> Origins.

Thank god I went and replayed Knight after this to wash the awful taste from my mouth.

Knight is the pinnacle of these games. The combat is at its apex. It's the most refined, complete experience. The combat challenges are good. The enemy variety is great. The way you string up a huge combo in the hundreds on those larger challenges is just so fricking satisfying. The predator challenges are great too. The other heroes are all really fun to play too even if their gameplay is simplified in comparison to Batman. That adds to the fun of doing their challenges.

All you people do is cry about a story that is perfectly serviceable if not better than the complete and utter nonsense that the stories in City / Origins are. Asylum isn't a bad game, it's just the City and Knight improved so much on the formula laid out in Asylum that it just can't compete with it.

Also, I liked the Batmobile, fight me. Much like the rest of the game it's just incredibly polished that's the one thing I respect about Knight the most. I know it launched in a bad state, but I never played it at launch so my experience is all based on how it was after it got patched. It runs flawlessly today.

Also don't even bother replying if you didn't complete 100% of all the hardest combat challenges, perfect freeflows, Killer Croc challenge, etc. Not only were they pretty hard, but it was still pretty fun to finish them off and I honestly got depressed once I finished all the challenges and there was nothing left to do...

I didn't play Knight until recently and I guess because it had a bunch of DLC baked into it over time it is CRAWLING with villains. It felt like every time I finished anything another guy popped out for me to stop. The racing was cool, the tank stealth was not. I would still rate it as the best one. The story wasn't great overall but the gameplay is easily the best.

Whoa, Joker was behind everything! What a tweeeest!

I'll admit the Jason Todd shit in Knight is pretty bad, as is the "Joker blood" shit, but I loved as Batman gets more and more crazy as the game goes on, the halucinations get worse and in general I just liked taking back the city.

        Anonymous

the story in Knight hits worse because I still remember the devs trying to say that it totally isn't Jason Todd even though if you're only barely knowledgeable of the Batfamily, you already knew it was Jason Todd.

Main problem with the story in Knight is Scarecrow's character. All he does is yap about "I know your fears" over the city speakers for the whole game, then gets bodied unceremoniously at the end.
