Play it up until the end of 6.0 and only the main story. Do not attach yourself to the community.
if you are missing WoW, you'll be kind of disappointed. It has worse combat, more one dimensional classes, worse zone and quest design. They even made dungeons even MORE like amusement rides. Basically every thing that wow did make the genre shittier, FFXIV embraced it and intensified it.
BUT, it has a good story, good looking armor / character customization, and lalafells. Try it out, its free.

Never played 2, but played 3 which is where I think the class design peaked. The healers and tanks all had their niches and dark arts was kino compared to the corpse drk is now. Especially dark arts abyssal drain spam once that clicked. Managing mana at least gave you something to do before falling asleep at the keyboard.
The homogenisation started in storm blood and only got worse from there.
3.x was alright, but they were nuking cross-class stuff by the midpatch of it.

WAR is a reactive job that can heal through damn near anything
DRK is a proactive job that requires you to know when you need to worry about mitigation and rewards you for using cooldowns well with damage
PLD is a support job that has decent mitigation and the best party utility being able to mitigate raidwide damage
GNB is a high apm job that has the most tools, but require the most encounter knowledge to use them to their fullest but has the lowest skill floor for dps.

WHM is a basic by the books healing job that has the most ways to restore health, very reactive
AST has decent tools but is very proactive where knowing when the damage is incoming is what determines your throughput rewarding encounter knowledge.
SCH has good shields but eats mana if you don't know what you're doing, but has the most spells with hard casting.
SGE has ok shielding, heals with dps (like disc priests), and has lots of instant cast spells that allow some reactivity but requires cooldowns to recover from any mistakes rewards job knowledge

Healers are a joke even in extremes/raid content wtf are you talking about. There's a reason that single healer extremes are the norm. The healing requirements are negligible outside of scripted heal here parts. Which means for much of the fight you're dpsing if people aren't making mistakes. The dps rotation on all of them is just keep a dot up every 40 seconds and spam whatever color your 1 button makes outside of MAYBE a more different nuke on a cd.
Sage and disc are nothing alike btw I can tell you haven't played anything not ffxiv in a while.

I play on controller and do that with every job, Single target attacks on R1 and AOE on L1

Wow had better job variety and dungeon design with multiple ways to do pulls and the nature of keys means you'll always be challenged. That said the atmosphere and weekly chores are horrendous.
The music and feel of boss fights in ffxiv are much better, but the classes are stale and homogenized.
I've only played either as midcore usually clearing heroic for the tier and pushing into ~keystone 20 in wow for the season or clearing the relevant extreme and pugging the first 2 layers of savage each tier since I Didn't have a static

There's nothing like keeping up bone shield stacks or trading them for a fatty shield on bdk for example. Or spell reflecting a key mechanic on warrior. Or even kiting back on any kite tank like monk or dh because they flat out don't exist because dungeons are a joke and you can't kite boss encounters.
Tank defensives suffer from the same class monetization every other class does because the creatively bankrupt devs have no idea how else to make sure every class can tank any encounter.

Homogenization is the natural consequence of having thirty to forty abilities per job. There's only so many ways you can do damage, etc., and those are bound to start overlapping and even be blatant copies when you need to fill that many buttons plus more per expansion. If they want the jobs to have any sense of individuality then they need to prune down to eight to twelve buttons max

That doesn't address the point at all. 24 is still an unnecessarily large amount of buttons if there's only gonna be like 4 different ways to do damage.
You're being too literal with this and many of those skills have various aspects to them to mix things up.

Plus almost every job has stuff they can trim and do, like AST with undraw or basically every job with at least 1 role action.
Tanks and healers run the exact same way. Laying out your hotbars for smoothest use isn't at all jobs being simple and i don't know why you're trying to make it that way.
Because even within the same game they used to play differently within themselves. Dark arts made drk play differently than pld or war and mana management was more important than it is now. War had the best dps burst with internal release >fell cleave to differentiate itself before every class got a burst to make way for the burst meta. And pal had clemency to heal on demand before war just did that naturally. Sure it fricked with your dps, but it introduced choices into the rotation.
Now the tanks play the same with small variances.
Sch used to be the dps healer with triple dots. Even sch's fairy got homogenized for gods sake. Remember when ast's cards were actually unique and took some though on who to throw them to?

I can't speak for dps classes because I don't have enough experience with them, but for the healers/dps it's not even an apples to apples comparison. You can see the lack of playstyle diversity within the same damn apple

I have every single class at level 90 (not boosted). Had every class at 80 in shadowbringers and I have over 500 days subscribed since 2013. He is absolutely correct and you are a dumbfrick shill. The game has gotten worse each expansion because it keeps getting dumbed down. Less dungeons added per patch, less content, content has gotten more boring. Savage for 5 ilvl higher gear that visually looks like shit and not to mention the gear isn't noticable stat wise. You don't magically feel stronger with better ilvl gear. It has a lot of problems stop defending it. Literally everything else is worse we all just are stuck in an era with really bad games so people like you lie and cling to the lie that FFXIV is not a themepark that is watered down. The game has plenty of good things about it but stop lying about the state of it.
I wish I could enjoy it but I'm not a fan of MMOs.

The story in the base game is quite generic and boring, peaks in the first expansion, becomes boring in the second expansion again.
The beginning and the end of the third expansion is pretty good, but the middle is boring filler. The fourth expansion's story has some idiotic moments and some interesting ones.
The combat gets worse every expansion so I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a huge FF fan an want to see the classic classes done in 3d.
It's free until you hit shadowbringers. Give it a try instead of shitting up the board.

I don't recommend it. The main story has some cool moments but every cool moment has 10 hours of boring filler preceding it. The gameplay leading up to them is pretty shit too. You spend most of the time teleporting around and then sprinting/riding your mount to the next NPC to talk to. When you do fight something the mobs are so weak they can only kill you if you fall asleep on the keyboard. The dungeons are slightly more interesting but they are all straight lines. They are more about spectacle than anything. The trial fights are cool but the trials you do to advance the story are piss easy, and they are made even easier by powercreep. This outright ruins the climactic moment of the final boss of the first main story arc by abruptly cutting off the dialogue when you kill it too quickly. Then you reach the endgame where you're either raiding or canceling your subscription until the next major patch. The casual content isn't very fun because it doesn't feel like it was designed for sapient beings. Casual games aren't bad games, but XIV's casual content is less engaging than a fricking Mario game.

Story sucks throughout the entire base game, vast majority of it is useless padding designed to waste your time, if you cut out all the "Teleport there and talk/interact with Y" it'd be 5 hours long
If you planned to go through the main quest with friends, you can't. Most of it needs to be done solo and will constantly kick you out of groups to watch cutscenes or fight instanced battles (often interactive cutscenes)
Finally the community is absolutely infested with trannies, turbo coomers and other assorted weird c**ts. If you don't believe me, start a female character in limsa and count the time until some troon tries it on with you, it won't be long

That's because in FF14, after a million updates, most classes are completely broken until level 70+. They added and removed abilities over time, but they never bothered to make sure progression still made sense. That's why some classes have like three buttons until level 30.

And this issue is exacerbated by the fact your class gets downleveled whenever you do a lower-level dungeon. In WoW and GW2 you keep all your abilities, you just deal less damage (the scaling can be wonky at times, especially in WoW, but all your buttons are still there). In FF14, you do a level 50 dungeon and 2/3 of your hotbar becomes unusable.
I wouldn't mind that so much, but the way your skillset pans out at 90 ends up having a completely different flow to sub-30.
What I mean is that you end up with skills with much smaller cooldowns at later levels, so you keep them in a more active place (especially if you use a cross hotbar like me) and then when you sync down and only have access to lesser used skills you've placed in less active parts of the hotbar, it gets quite awkard.
Granted I haven't played since BfA, but all of this sounds exactly like WoW with the exception of less buttons. It has far more buttons than WoW. Having a 9 button mouse increased QoL for XIV by a real good margin, whereas with WoW I easily got by with less buttons.
Getting an MMO mouse made the game far more comfortable to play. My left wrist was starting to hurt from having to hold awkward modifier keys so often, and now I don't have any modifier keys at all. Granted, this required also binding F1-F3 for certain cooldowns, and F4 as a macro to switch from single-target abilities to AoE abilities, but the game is still far more comfortable to play for extended periods than it was.
I miss XIV circa 2016.
I can't have all my DOT spells on my arcanist so I can healbawd while I spam DOT on everything.

Despite all of this, i have to go against the general opinion around the community of this game and say they are genuinely the best part of it, mostly because there are alot of casual'ish side activities that you can do because the community has a general very "make your own fun" approach to it, aside from the erphomosexuals, i wish the game just embraced its sandbox aspect more and stop trying to appease to both the hardcore/casual audience because the two clash when put on the same enviroment.

The bosses get a bit more grandiose with more mechanics but that's about it.
Anything related to MSQ you can literally do it while high and drunk at the same time. Die like 10 times and still beat it.
i personally did the venat fight high, drunk, and sucking my own dick at the same time.
A lot of jobs have huge pieces of their rotation missing at lower levels, only becoming comfortable or fun to play at 60, 70, or sometimes even beyond that. For Paladin, for example, all of its hardest-hitting abilities are spells, and your endgame burst phase has 5 (occasionally 6 when certain stars align) GCDs of spellcasting, but you don't even learn your first offensive magic spell until level 64, and you don't get the ability that makes that spell 'bursty' until level 68. I think the only job that has almost all of its core pieces at level 50 is Monk.
MCH I recall also feels pretty complete at 50. It's a shame those two jobs are about the only ones that feel tolerable to play at that level when it should be the norm.

GL upkeep was the soul of MNK, positionals barely mattered aside from boostine. Someone had already done the math and by SB, missing all non-bootshine positionals was barely a 2% damage loss overall.

I would be fine if positionals were all "behind" or "flank", but the fact that most jobs you have to wiggle on that nub on the back corner of the targeting circle is one of the reasons why I don't play melee.

I liked cross-classing skills, I liked that you had to level another class to unlock jobs, reprisals/counters with drk/pld was cool, brd/ast giving buffs that weren't just "you do more damage now" was fun, tanking in general was more fun. I can't imagine how much more they can dumb it down. You don't even have to manage a meter with drg anymore, its just automatically on. I don't get it

The tank/healer/dps triangle is a false dichotomy that reinforces laziness and contributes to the staling (yes that's a word) of the game.
Tanks are just super overtuned. Running dungeons without one is more fun ; suddenly aggro exists, cc exists, and healers need to spend most of their time healing.

I started a month ago, made it to heavensward and then quit. If you like being bored, doing chores and being surrounded by queers and child molesters you'll probably like it
well its not an MMORPG its an mmoRPG, if that makes any sense to you, its not like wow if that was what you played before, its ver much story driven and the main story is the main content so for most of the game you are reading text and playing alone, everythings pretty linear but its a great spectacle, pretty much any big boss (not dungeon bosses) has their own music theme that can change with phases ect. , the free trial is stupidly generous and about to get even more generous, can't hur to try out.
It's not an RPG either that's the thing. It does basic level shit people wouldn't be caught dead accepting in an offline RPG either. The gear is pointless. There's no builds. There's no strategy to the combat it's a checklist of places to stand over the course of a few minutes while traps go off in the same spots. None of that shit would fly in an actual RPG and yoshitpiss has gotten the biggest free pass in gaming I have ever seen for passing off bullshit as visionary genius.
That flies in every single jrpg ever made, including the entire final fantasy series.
Western rpgs are the ones that have millions of customization options and bugs.

When I quit wow, the dungeon chores were just like ffxiv: group finder, “hi”, mass pull, aoe gangbang , see if you can get a 6 minute clear. Warriors were just as big of a single person group gigachad as they are in ffxiv, maybe more so because boss hos were relatively lower.

I can only truly speak for PLD but we got additional party mitigation, a bonus raidwide heal+shield, and Cover which allows us to eat the damage direct towards another party member.
Its not going to change the core playstyle but in raid content I have a niche which makes the healers job 5-10% easier depending on group synergy and planning.
You forgot how it also swaps from a melee to a mage mode.
Yeah its a fun optimizing challenge to work your rotation to keep uptime when away from a boss via burst window.
I just didn't bring it up because Anon mostly seems to have issue with the lack of differences between how the Tanks actually Tank and how PLD stands out.

Really it feels like they originally wanted dungeons to be like variant dungeons but just got bored or couldn't make it work. There is NO reason why dungeons should all be instanced UNLESS they are variant since you're meant to be locked in to the path you choose. Dungeons should be like in FFXI where you can (must) physically GO TO the dungeon in the overworld and complete it without opening a single menu. Yes, this means other players can wade in and kill shit for you, but you could also scale it.

Go for higher level mobs and look for better places where you can pull multiple. Instead of vibrating just freeze and unload into as many as you can and just do singles when your AoE is on cooldown

there's a few specific areas in some locations that are great for grouping packs together, like the cave full of hostile nu mou/porxies in the north east of Il Mheg or the cave in the west of the Rak'tika greatwood.

Kek, the FOMO is real for some of the events especially the irregular tomestone events has those give such good rewards that you'd normally need to raid EX for.

My point is that there's so few good proper armour for mages you should use it on those instead of something like Paladin, which gets some of THE best head-to-toe sheet metal in the entire game.

Imo, the best way to play it is on a handheld. Stream it to a tablet and play with a controller, or play natively from a Steam Deck (or equivalent device). It's unbearable to play on a PC imo, but on a handheld it feels like reading a book where you press buttons and kill stuff from time to time.

Everything before that is piss easy and boring.
Story gets good in the first expansion area.
So prepare for 40-50 hours of boredom minimum.

Don't buy into the "the story is good and engaging"-meme, it's not. Especially in during leveling, all you do is slowly moving back and forth and killing stuff and finding stuff while interrupted by shitty cutscenes everytime. Combat is clunky, macros don't work properly.
the only two "big" mmos i like are eso and ffxiv
eso because there's actually complex character customization and you can become undead, ffxiv because the outfits are nice and i enjoy playing an evil black mage type

OP if you are having an MMO itch then you are in the wrong ride. Every activity in this game is instanced, the overworld is empty and the social aspect is dead. It's a single player/ co-op game up to 4 or 8 players depending on the content tagged in stores as "MMO".
