So, is Guild Wars 2 worth playing? The only MMO I've ever put significant time into is SWTOR and I've always been interested in trying it out. Any other MMOs worth trying out, like say Elder Scrolls Online?

Hell no. It's absolute troony slop and dead as frick. I mean the recent news should be sign enough. Guild wars 1 is the only good part.
What's the recent news about it?
the cope that they are working on gw3 since gw2 is dying and not making enough money for investors
from what i heard from that report, GW2 is NCsoft's (the publisher of GW2 and many other MMOs over the years) only single successful game, and they mentioned GW3 because they thought that would make investors happy.
Do you like skills being stuck to weapons? For example if you want to be a pure dps warrior you are forced to use dual axes. If the answer is no the game is not for you, ESO has the same issue.
I don't think I'd see that as a problem. Most RPGs require you to use a particular weapon type in order to use the skills for a class.
You can be a bladesworn gunkatana weaboo that hits 200k+ damage with the dragon slash. Primarily uses sword and pistol.
Every day I thank my mom for those piano lessons. it's the only way to play Weaver optimally.
weapon swaps are one of the only cool things about gw2 tbh
it has the best mmo combat in my opinion, and the events system is fun. The writing started out okay, got a little better, tanked into horrible territory, got even worse somehow, then went back to being just okay.
The 3 hard bosses in the game are amazing but everything else is easy as frick
Base game is free, although it's basically an extended trial. If you like it get the rest.
Fair enough. I'll probably give it a try since its free. Any immediate things I should know as a new player? Also, how are the classes?
gw2 classes are kinda odd in a sense that every one of them has means to do everything even if not optimally. for example, warrior can heal with shouts. in essence choosing a class in gw2 is more along the lines of choosing the aesthetic and flavor of doing things. you do need expansions for specializations, though. which means base game will give you the intended vanilla feeling of classes.
That's good to know, also a bit of an odd way of doing things, but at least they give players the ability to stick with the aesthetic of their choosing.
Don't be fooled by that dumb troony anon the game fricking SUCKS.
>mfw druid exists because people b***hed about no dedicated healbot
I will never understand the appeal of healbots. That archetype doesn't even exist in most tabletop games. It's considered a bad form to play support characters.
Nah, GW2 got the idea of support just right. Problem is A) people want holy trinity and B) GW2 didn't really substitute that design with any else meaningful. You had classes not fitting into the old paradigm, but group content they had to partake in was just slapdash "roll out of damage" and "enemies randomly targeting party members".
You have to understand something about GW2 - it's hated by both people who wanted it to be GW1.5 and people who essentially dislike it for not being enough like every other MMORPG out there. It's essentially a perfect side game as you can quickly "finish" the game if you want to due to minimal vertical progression. There's a frickton of shit to grind for, but it won't appeal to people who want new tier of raiding gear with every patch.
>It's essentially a perfect side game
good summary. you will burn out if you attempt to play it full time like you would any mmorpg built around subs, though.
If one wants legendaries it's certainly burn out thing, but it's not really much better than ascended gear. Mainly cool e-penis effects and whatever
I'll say maybe. It's good mmorpg because there's no subscription fee and you don't have to grind for new weapons and stuff for stats. I mean there's no like new update, now there's more powerful weapons and stuff that you have to grind. It's mainly cosmetics stuff.
Good on/off game. I sometimes log in and play couple days. Then I don't play again in year
it was only good through HoT (now ruined because mounts) and PoF (now dead). you missed your window to enjoy it.
latest expansion is absolute ass
>deliver half the content on release
>no new specializations
>other half received via episodic updates
>all for the LOW LOW price reduction of $5
Sounds about like SWTOR's latest expansion, sadly enough.
The spin is they're going for yearly expansions. You know, shit they should've been doing from day one rather than going with subpar Living World episodes and milking the cash shop.
As far as modern MMOs go I think you can do worse.
