Coded sets up why Dream Drop is happening and furthers the "reviving the Wayfinder trio" plotline.
Plus the gameplay is mostly fun. So one should try it anyway.

Literally all you need to know about Coded is that Mickey sent a letter filling in the Destiny Islands crew about the Wayfinders and that they should probably do something before Xehanort pulls more frickery. You're really not missing too much without it story-wise.

Absolutely nothing of relevance happens in CoM. Further, what little does is largely summed up in the prologue of KH2.

        Just skip to 2, OP.

          >Absolutely nothing of relevance happens in CoM
NTA and that's not true at all.
It directly follows from the end of KH1.
It kills off half the Organization (if you skip to 2 you'll wonder why they call themselves "Organization XIII" when there aren't 13 of them).
          It introduces DiZ.
          It introduces Axel.
          It introduces Namine.
It sets up Riku's character arc for the rest of the franchise.
It establishes Riku's and Mickey's friendship.
It explains why Sora's recovering in a pod and a year older in KH2.
And Castle Oblivion is important in BBS.

Days and Coded aren't all that important but COM absolutely is. If you want to skip it because of the gameplay or whatever that's fine but you should definitely look up a plot synopsis, maybe watch the PS2 cutscenes on YouTube.

I wouldn't go that far but as someone who played it at release on PSP I thought it was pretty good.
Opinions on BBS didn't really turn sour until the HD collections came out, because new players didn't have the context of it being a PSP game. It's arguably the best game on PSP if you don't care about Monster Hunter. It was a huge step up from the previous handheld titles in terms of recreating console KH's style of gameplay and visuals, even if it still didn't quite achieve full parity. I also enjoyed the command system despite it being broken as hell, and the story did a good job of re-contextualizing KH2's bullshit (though the dialogue and cutscene direction wasn't always stellar).
And yes I enjoyed DDD too even though its story was very messy and the dream eaters were kinda lame. It has my favorite end boss sequence in the whole franchise to the point that it undermined KH3's ending.

      Big gay moron chart.
The collection is literally laid out in order. So long as you know that 2.8 is greater than 2.5, you will be fine.
The only "issue" that comes about playing in the listed order is literally just 358/2 being put before KH2. That is the only thing you need to specify. Otherwise, it is as simple as this
      >1.5 + 2.5
      >2.8
      >3
      Done.

      Play KH1
      Play CoM
      Play KH2
Watch the 358/2 Days cutscenes (or play it, but you better enjoy Agrabah)
      Play BBS
Watch the Re:Coded cutscenes (although I heard the gameplay is good)
      Play DDD
Watch the Union Cross short video (if you want a summary) or watch all the Union Cross cutscenes online (if you really want to get deep into it)
      Play 0.2
      Play 3 + 3's DLC
      Watch the MoM cutscenes

Kek, it's a mashup game, the plot was supposed to be functional and didn't matter if it was a bit ridiculous but devs realized the public actually took the game's story seriously so they didn't know what the frick to do for sequels, because there was no way of doing a cohesive and meaningful story that wasn't ridiculous enough. At the end of the day, the whole canon tries to be deep and polished but it's just a mess that apparently succeeds at looking like it wasn't the very first thing that came to their minds.

GBA plays better due to the mechanics being tailor made for the system. Its not bad on the PS2 but its not as smooth and can feel janky at times. PS2 does have another phase for the final boss that is pretty fun along with another new fight too, and the voice acting throughout the game is fantastic. There as some small changes to the script between the two versions too so its not a bad idea to play both if you end up liking the game and its playstyle.

You can play CoM if you like, though it doesn't play like the other games and the important parts of its story will be recapped at the start of KH2. Play KH2 and stop there. The million spinoff stories in the other games range from merely off the rails to batshit, making less sense each iteration with a connections chart that could provide work to a yarn factory for a decade, and none of it ultimately means anything. Some entries stand out a bit more from a gameplay standpoint, but be aware they won't help you much if you're invested in the main story. As for KH3, it's the logical place to go after 2, but prepare for many levels of disappointment.

tl;dr - You played 1, so play 2 and then forget the series exists. You will be happier.

Chain of Memories, either the original (GBA) or the Re:Chain of Memories (remake). It is probably better to play the Re:CoM because it has slightly more content (I think there is additional cutscenes and extra cards you can unlock). The gameplay is different due to the change in perspective (top down view vs full 3d), but basically the same game otherwise.

  23. 2 weeks ago

    I prefer the GBA version.
Original GBA version has its own spritework whereas Re:COM recycles KH1 and KH2 models which makes it feel less novel, especially if you're playing it right after KH1. Re:COM feels exactly like KH1 except you're weighed down by cards, which doesn't feel good IMO. Re:COM also has some major balance issues, human bosses are super easy to cheese. I also think that COM's more humble presentation leaves more to the imagination than Re:COM's. Dudes in cloaks standing in empty white rooms works better with sprites on a small GBA screen than it does in full 3D with voice acting on PS2. Re:COM didn't add enough extra detail to the environments to make them feel like proper spaces so a lot of scenes come off as awkward.
Though they're both repetitive games, I wouldn't call the original a 10/10. However I liked COM's story more than KH2's, simultaneously simpler but more mature. And despite not being a numbered game it is still fairly important to the larger storyline.

    >Kingdom Hearts 1
    You are here.
    >Chain of Memories (either one)
Optional. Try it out and if the card game mechanics don't click, just look up the cutscenes online. Most of the game is recycled assets and filler.
    >Days
Worth checking out. Has a neat little upgrade system and you get to go on missions and shit. A good change of pace.
    >Re:Coded
Optional. Not a bad game but it doesn't move the plot forward in a significant way. Look up the cutscenes.
    >2 Final Mix
Generally considered the best game in the series. Make sure to pick proud or critical mode for maximum enjoyment.
    >Birth By Sleep
Also optional. Has a bunch of multiplayer centered design choices and a strong emphasis on synthesis if you're into crafting autism. It will feel like a downgrade from 2 gameplay wise but some people like it. Worst case scenario, look up the cutscenes and skip it.
    >Dream Drop Distance
Another game with emphasis on side mechanics, this time a Pokemon-like thing. VERY important plot wise.
    >the mobile games
Just look them up online, it's not worth the hassle. Extremely important to the plot btw.
