This holy shit. I work at a pawn shop so I decided to buy one of these things for myself. Paid 360$ for a disk one. I played the two games I wanted on it, one if which is now on PC. And now I can't even sell the piece of shit for what I paid. No one wants it lmao. Kill me
Demon's Souls and Ratchet and Clank were my two games. I got my console cheap as hell also anon, my partner preferred playing the PS4 Pro and we both had a Switch each before we were living together and I convinced her to let me use hers and my PS4 Pro to exchange for it since there was a store paying 50% extra credit on in store exchange because it'd just opened. I was lucky I'd not played Ghost of Tsushima because the PS5 version made up for the disappointment of Ratchet and Clank which I platinum'd within a week. I enjoyed FFVII Remake though and I've enjoyed fricking ports from the playstation so far honestly. Yet I'm more excited to play Switch games enhanced for Switch 2, since there are so many more than PS4 games worth playing, although that's my opinion and I only really enjoy Sucker Punch as a PlayStation studio anymore

They design games around the limitations of the console better than anyone, and I don’t see that changing with more power. Games like Link’s Awakening, botw, totk, bayo 3, etc. that can’t keep consistent frame delivery will be much better experiences on Switch 2. That’s when we’ll likely see a shift in Nintendo fans saying these games run great on the og Switch too.

"As fast as a PS5" is complete nonsense. Even "as fast as a base PS4" is hard to believe to be honest. Maybe in docked mode, but definitely not in handheld mode.
Steam Deck is roughly as fast as a PS4, and:
1) Steam Deck uses a more efficient GPU architecture (RDNA2 > Ampere at low power);
2) Steam Deck's APU runs at (up to) 15W, the entire device consumes (up to) 25W. This is A LOT for a handheld.
As a comparison, Switch V1 ran at (up to) 9W: the entire device, screen included at maximum brightness. Switch V2 reduced maximum power consumption to 6W.
So it's going to be a lot slower than people believe. That's on paper though, in practice games are going to look a lot better on a big 4K TV (compared to a PS4, or a Steam Deck as well) thanks to DLSS.
FF7R is a last-gen game, it's going to run fine on Switch 2. MH6 we have no idea, for all we know it could be a cross-gen game.

This is the best case scenario for DLSS. Two games where there's almost no rapid camera movement so it can generate the pixels. For any other game (example: Mario Kart or racers) DLSS is a nightmare.

TAA/TAAU is about drawing different pixel offsets on every frame, and then using the magic of deforming the previous frames to look like the current one, and assembling a complete picture out of it.
The difference with DLSS is that it uses AI shit to do the deformation process rather than using some sort of motion vector shit, or motion vector shit with sharpen (FSR)
But will it be enough to convince third party devs to port more games to Switch 2? How much DLSS will help them reduce the cost of porting games without optimizing? That's the whole point

The rumor was never about the next Nintendo's console being on par with the PS5/XSX in raw power, just producing comparable visuals through DLSS. Given how some PS4 games still look better than the average current gen release, that's not even impressive. Looking at the leaked specs, switch 2 will be about ~3.5TF docked, maybe 2.5TF undocked. For comparison PS4 was 1.8TF, PS4 Pro was 3.2TF and Series S is 4TF.
So it'll be a PS4 Pro but with far superior CPUs, 50% more RAM, and custom cores to handle DLSS and RT.
Nowhere close to PS5 levels but a good step up above base PS4 tier.

Yes, it is theoretically possible. Expect portable PS4 Pro/RX580 levels of performance. The 4K rumors are because the games run with DLSS Performance, so ~50% native then upscaled. Nintendo probably waited because the Orin was released in 2021 and it takes some time before you can pick these chips up for a discount.
Problem: it's only going to barely meet parity with modern smartphones. For example, AYN announced an Odin 2 with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip which is just as powerful for $299. This is why Apple feels confident enough to start venturing into serious gaming again with the iPhone 15 as ARM GPUs have gotten powerful enough with TSMC die shrinks to play new games at lower resolutions. It's going to be a similar situation to the current generation where hardware comes out that initially seems current (the consoles are just rebranded RX5700s from when the SKU failed to hit among gamers), but gets left in the dust with rapid technological progression. It's fine for the software experience--a lot of devs have ported to the refresh consoles and so it'll be like home to them and ports will be a million times better--but stop with the "it's going to do 4K native" crap.

PS4 and Xbone were 28nm APUs. 7nm has been around for a while, Apple is on 3nm, everyone else is going to 5nm.
PS4 APU was 28nm, 19mm x 19mm = about 361mm @ 28nm. 7nm is a quarter of the size. So a 7nm PS4 APU would be around 90mm^2.
Tegra Xavier is a 350mm^2 die at 12nm.
PS5 APU is a 308mm^2 die at 7nm. No way Switch with a newer Tegra comes close. Not with the power PS5 draws (around 200w gaming). Based on APU die sizes and difference between x86/ARM and Nvidia/AMD GPUs, I think Switch 2 will be 70% between PS4 and PS5, closer to PS5. With DLSS it will probably look pretty close to PS5 when docked. DLSS is gonna let them make games look better without having as much power. PS5 doesn't have any upsampling like that AFAIK.
The only possible guesses are nintendo going with 7nm silicon or 5nm silicon depending on price and availability as 3nm is currently off the table.
PS5 has FSR 2.2 and soon FSR3. According to Digital Foundry, FSR3 upscaling pretty much looks the same as DLSS upscaling. Frame Gen is where they differ where Nvidia has the lead.

It all depends on how much the game uses async compute. The more it uses, the worse FSR performs. If the game uses barely if none then it's basically free. DLSS always has a cost which is powering the tensor cores and adding overhead just like FSRs TAA.

I'm an AMD guy myself, just saying PS5 and XBox do not have any of this upsampling and frame generation shit and Switch 2 is extremely likely to have it. Sounds very Nintendo to leverage a weaker, cheaper CPU/GPU and use some gimmicks to try and be relevant. With any level of decent screen and battery there is no physical way it could sport PS5 power, I would be shocked if it was PS4 non-pro power. On the other does anyone really get a Nintendo device for its power since the SNES (maybe sorta the N64 at the time but its specs were better on paper than practice), nothing they've made since then has exactly been a power house, even the GCN limited itself on some choices and was vastly behind the xbox.
Don't get me wrong the Switch was too weak even for its release, 720@30 was rough even then. Double rough as the battery life wasn't great either for the trade off. And yet again for the number of emulation machines out shortly after able to hit PS2 and even into some WiiU games at 1080@60 for similar cost. (I know Mario Kart hits 60 and a few others do to but racing games are easy to push to higher abilities, even PS2 was pushing that to an extent on those)
Real world performance of the Switch felt more like about PS3, it has advantages over the PS3 by far like ram amount and its portable, but in terms of what it runs and at what level it runs that was it. Not bad for its price either.
I guess added together it means the Switch is a shit console, but a reasonable handheld at its price though not without some competition if you want something more. Switch 2 will likely follow unless they make the dock more than a tdp boost, but an actual secondary gpu dock that can trade blows with modern consoles (can't say modern hardware as those are trading blows with 8+ year old gpus). That would be likely a big jump in price to try to regain market from PS/MS that have likely just moved on.

Phone GPUs and AMD APUs are pretty impressive at hitting PS2 to PS3ish power right now, but you can only do so much on battery and limited watts. DLSS can certainly help close some gaps, but it at present is still not equal to native. And even the best of present APUs starts to struggle on PS3 tier games. I just can't see it clearing using DLSS to clear the gap of 2 console generation. Its amazingly impressive what a portable chip can do these days, but serious doubt in the company that has made anemic or flawed hardware for something like 20 years.

let me play all my switch games i love at 1440p 60fps and I'll shell out. the switch has been amazing as someone who dipped out for the wii u. the only downside is the controllers are cheap shit (though i just use the pro controller for everything) and it's weak. it's like the polar opposite to my ps5 experience, which is mostly just thinking 'why does this system even exist?' it can't even run bloodborne boosted which was the main reason i bought it, because my dumb ass assumed they'd have that up and running within a month. now I'm thinking this eyesore waste of space couldn't run that game 1080p at a steady 60 even if they built it from the ground up.
I doubt there will be good emulation for the switch 2 especially with denuvo or always online so that is another reason to get it.

You're assuming Star Ocean could only barely run at 30 fps when in reality it probably ran at like 45 fps with various dips. So they limited it to 30 fps to show off better for the direct. Then they optimized it to run at a full 60fps during the last few months.
That'd be nice (especially since it seems to be running at a pretty low resolution compared to the PS4/5 version) but are plenty of heavy dips during the battle segments in the reveal, so I'm not sure

Bowser’s Fury is a good example of a game that looks as good as it needs to, but drops frames, so the goal of making all 1st party games locked to 60 and maybe 30 for Zelda should be the goal of a Switch 2.

Base PS4 was dogshit hardware that devs struggled to get 1080p60fps on from day 1. The second the pro came out devs basically gave up on it and most things run at minimum settings with 900p and hugely unstable 30fps.
Battlefield 4 runs at 900p, Battlefield 1 runs at 600p, CoD runs at some fricked 1080x1200, Nier Automata runs at 900p, Nioh runs at 720p, Titanfall 2 runs at 720p, Uncharted 4 is 900p, Mirrors Edge 2 was 900p, Tekken is 900p, Killzone was 1080i, etc

Expect a cut down version of Nvidia's previous generation Tegra chip, optimized for a handheld TDP, and not quite the Aerith Steam Deck at max power.
There is also Valve's "Sephiroth" on the horizon.
Steam Deck has proven 15 watts isn't too high for a handheld.
Add in a 60Wh battery and thats 3 hours at 15 watts.
dont know about you, but ps4/xb1 level of performance for a portable console seems like a pretty big deal
plus they will be addressing joycon drift as well, meaning the lite versions of switch 2 will be an even better deal for so many people who dont care about docked mode but were put off from buying switch lite due to joycon drift issues

How much better is 3.5 though. 1 was a huge graphical downgrade, 2 was noticeably worse than native sometimes to the point of distraction, 3 last I saw just added some additional features. To me its always seemed in the same line as upscaling, if done well it can be better than sticking a low res image on a high res display. DLSS and FSR are better than playing something janky below 60 and getting headaches, but it feels like native 1080@60 should be a standard these days even in the tablet market. I've not looked at DLSS for awhile or FSR so I'm curious if they are looking better than the DLSS 2.0 days (I know people jizzed over 2.0 being workable but honestly they both still looked worse then to the point I would rather turn down settings)

There's a difference between targeting internally vs targeting for the player.
The beautiful thing about DLSS for Nintendo is that so long as they have enough overhead on their frametimes and provide the motion vector info, the devs themselves can just target 1080p and then let DLSS3.5 handle presenting a 4k resolve to the player.
The devs can just focus on making games at the same basic targets as the Switch but with some more oomph for framerate, and then DLSS is what handles actually letting the image stand toe-to-toe with the Series X and PS5. The big benefit is, based on what I've read, that DLSS targeting a given resolution ends up usually being more power-efficient than doing the same natively with AA (presuming both are frame limited to the same framerate)
