Larian, Atlus, even indiegays like the people who made Chained Echoes run circles around them.

the combat is possibly the worst turn based system ever conceived, but its still the highest selling in the series.

lad was the first yakuza game to be released on multiple platforms instead of just the playstation, and the series gained popularity after zero with lad being the next major release. and keep in mind judgment sold way over expectation and was successful mainly due to lad being a menu game.

RPGs cant be real time combat.
This is just fact. Some idiots call them RPGs but this is wrong.

RPG actions are determined by character skills checks. This is the core Role Playing point. But in the case of the real time DEX checks are essentially not for character but for player thus player cant play character, player plays himself and this is not RPG.
Trying to turn RPG into real time is gatekeeping out of role playing all auditory with low DEX stats (IE 80% of gamers).

Final Fantasy as a series has always been embarrassed that it's an RPG series. That it had turn based combat. It's why it tried stuff like the old ATB system. It wanted to escape being turn based, in any way it could, and ditched the combat system the first opportunity it got.

In some part, I can almost understand it. Final Fantasy, as a series, was always more popular overseas than it was in its home country. Dragon Quest dominated there. And overseas market alleged to HATE turn based combat. This attitude is still visible to this day. When people talk about turn based combat, they have to add qualifiers to it. "This isn't NORMAL turn based combat, it has this gimmick that totally makes it a different thing!" or if it lacks the gimmick, the sales pitch becomes "it may be turn based combat, but X thing makes it tolerable." Of course, often it's not as overt, but that's the overall tone. Turn based combat is something to be "fixed" in eyes of normal western gamers. That's not to say they don't enjoy turn based combat, they do, but the attitude and impression in people's minds is that it's primitive and needs shit like the environmental interactions of Larian games or whatever to justify why something so primitive can be "good" to the masses.

This is an attitude that has hurt Final Fantasy the most, out of all game franchises. It's an attitude missing in Final Fantasy's home country, words like "generic" aren't common and not associated with such negativity as they are in English. It is why there's such a difference in the legacy of these two JRPG progenitors. Dragon Quest continues to be celebrated. Its latest entries are among its most celebrated. It continues to be just normal turn based combat, in medieval settings, features heroes on quests to beat evil with stories featuring familial bonds, rather than 30 dimension hopping time loop meta story with combat trying to be something else as Final Fantasy has become.

BG3 was loved in spite of the turn-based combat, not because of it.
What it proves is that turn-based is not a deal breaker if you can be great in other areas.
If you were to make Final Fantasy turn-based again, it'd still have all the same issues that modern FFs have at the moment
