Are you serious? PvP is dying, raiding is dying, and even M+ is seeing a dropoff. But you can queue as a tank and get fast queues in the utterly irrelevant LFD since there are so many DPS waiting for a tank, since there so few tanks since so many people aren't participating, and that makes you think the game is "healthy"? Legit brain dead, but then again, you play WoW in the current year, so, yeah.

Do you actually engage with any real content in the game? Like, rated BGs or Arena or raiding or high M+? Because you are posting random queues that no one but the most brain dead players even engage with as proof the game is "alive", are you even aware of how much dropoff exists in the actual, gear progressing parts of the game at this point? What is your rating this season? What about your raid progress? Because there's no way you can be claiming the game isn't having problems with participation if you are involved in any of the actual high end content which is the true meat of the game.

So you don't actually raid, don't progress high M+, and you don't even play serious PvP of any kind. So you actually don't understand that all of those activities are seeing major drop off since you never engage with them and think that groupfinder is the real marker for how the game is doing. Yeah, we're done here.

Post your raid progress and your M+ progress. You pulling up the groups tab does not mean you actually progress in anything, especially if your primary means of completing these activities is pugging.

After completing a prestigious clerkship with Judge Raymond Randolph of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Ion Hazzikostas joined Wilmer Hale, where he worked on white collar criminal defense and internal investigations. His colleagues at the firm included a number of attorneys who played key roles in the war on terror: government officials such as Stephen W. Preston, former CIA general counsel; Jamie Gorelick, a former Deputy U.S. Attorney General and member of the CIA National Security Advisory Panel; and David S. Cohen, the current CIA Deputy Director, who, like Ion, worked on white collar criminal defense and internal investigations at Wilmer Hale’s D.C. office.

        >who is he
Ion hazikostas, he was the leader of one of the most popular guilds in wow in the vanilla/bc/wotlk days as well as the owner/operator of one of the biggest wow theorycrafting forums
He was hired onto blizzard years ago to develop raids, and in 2016? he was promoted to the lead developer for world of warcraft. He is a boomer raidgay elitist who thinks all other content in an mmo besides endgame raiding shouldn't matter, and that is why the most worked on and spotlighted content in wow is the mythic raids and the raid world first race/leaderboards. Everything else in his game is secondary and that's a big reason why wow has been bleeding subs, because people don't want to work a full time job raiding and doing nothing else
Even when Blizzard recently did a subscriber only survey asking what people liked doing the most ingame and 70% of players said they prefer dungeons, the main focus of the game is raids and raiders are treated like higher class citizens than pvpers/m+ players

Halo 4 campaign is still better than 2 and 3 though. Gunplay is better. The things you get to do in the campaign are better like riding on top of a monster truck and piloting a mech and a freakin' pelican. You don't have to play as the enemy. There's no rapping spokesperson for an entity named after a natural disaster which has no consciousness and simply consumes everything it comes across. The only way WoW could be 'saved' is if they made it F2P, and did a cata style rework of the main world again, and focus on letting us explore and quest there, in low-power adventures. Minor things like housing and body sliders would help.

But the only one of those things we're likely to see is F2P, which will cause a boom in population that will probably extend the game's life another year or two before were back to this level again and they have to figure out another trick to keep people playing.

They need to ditch this focus on big stories and killing interdimensional beings bullshit, and just focus on the gameplay. WoW's base gameplay is still better than most MMOs out there, make THAT the focus of an expansion, rework the world, let people explore and quest wherever, and add open world content as the lategame focus. I actually enjoy WoW's combat and visuals, I just hate how they just keep pulling use to alternate dimensions and timelines instead of giving us normal adventuring. It's really not that complicated. Just stop pretending anyone ever really gave a shit about WoW's story besides besides the occasional raid boss like the Lich King or Garrosh.

WC3 had fun and interesting lore, for a video game story it was quite good. The MMO proceeded to develop virtually no new lore of its lore and cannibalize and destroy all the lore the RTS series had set, leaving the world in its current wretched and unsalvageable state. You cannot fix the lore of Warcraft at this point, it's too far gone, you would have to practically pull a capegay universe level reset and wipe out massive chunks of what is currently there to save it, and at that point why not just make something new altogether? It would actually be less effort to create a new setting from scratch than it would be to fix Warcraft at this point.

They are creating something new, a game called Odyssey. Their next flagship game is a survival semi-MMO ala Rust/Ark + Valheim with a couple of hundred people per server. It has been in development for 6-7 years by now, which is why BfA + Shadowlands + Dragonflight were such fricking disasters, they were made by some B-tier team full of interns and new hires. It will be officially announced and revealed at Blizzcon in November.

Nope. It was sufficiently simple and nice. It wasn't some overly complex shit and it wasn't supposed to be that much for an RTS series. Not to mention it was memorable and pleasant. All they need to do is retcon everything that came with WoW and during its whole time period.

I saw this posted in the WC3 thread and it perfectly encapsulates why WoW cannot be saved.
Putting mechanical concerns aside (although make no mistake, the gameplay IS shit) the new guard has spent considerable effort destroying the setting, the tone, and the characters themselves. And no matter how much people will scoff and say story doesn't matter, it damn well does. A cursory look at other MMOs tells you that, since Final Fantasy players spend so much time sucking off that game's writing, and even Guild Wars 2's playerbase has considerable investment in that game's writing, which honestly isn't even that good. Part of what made Warcraft so successful as a franchise was its setting and atmosphere, and that is never, ever coming back. Even if they fired every dipshit on the writing and art teams, the replacements still wouldn't be able to recapture the spark. It is unironically over.

The problem with WoW is that the only fun content where you interact with others is raiding, but raidlogging is bad for health of the game as a whole and they want to force you to do otherwise by making not fun parts of the game mandatory and autistically tune raids such that you need to do them to beat gear checks

Having aiming in the game doesn't automatically make it an action game, it's a bit more technical than that. The server technology required literally didn't exist back then but it does now.

clueless. They hat quake mechanics in darkfall online with real projectiles. Archery would have arrows drop in height with distance. It was mechanically a superior game to new world. And the best part is it was made by some greeks on shoestring budget.

So it's more like a shooter, we've had MMOFPS/shooters for a long time yes but things get really wonky once you get in melee range. Today we have advanced prediction models that allow for more seamless interactions getting synced between clients and server architecture that allows for more data to be passed between players so we can have more players on the screen doing advanced shit.
MMO players usually think that aiming is a requirement for action games but it really isn't, the game can be tab target and still behave like an action game due to the number of interactions and the amount of data being sent.
New World might be a terrible action game from a gameplay perspective but it's an action game none the less, under the hood at least.

DF is actually really good. but unfortunately the BFA - SL double tap killed it and I'm not sure Retail can ever really come back in the same way as from WoD to Legion. then you pile on the stigma of Blizz being a fricking meme of stealing breast milk, the Cosby suite, frickboi McCree, and... releasing OverWatch 0.2

Like DF is as if they just let everyone be creative and come up with any crazy idea they wanted, and then they fricking implemented all of it. whilst also being reactive with fixes and patches to improve it further.

i think they need to take it even further though. WoW boomers will hate this but, they have Classic now anyway - but the reality is the modern game needs to just remove the Alliance-Horde community split and merge everything into megaservers. if you play Alliance or you simply aren't on one of the two, maybe three "correct" servers, you are going to have a bad time. drop the ego and past convention, the population isn't big enough anymore, and it shows.

    t. came back since quitting first tier of Shadowlands, my server has 3,000 TOTAL "active" characters. lel

WoW players are so mindbroken they think Blizzard cutting out the grinds and activities like Tor'ghast due to reducing investment into the game is a "feature", not realizing they are getting the least amount of content they've ever had, and Blizzard is selling them on reducing the scope of the game as an improvement. Even the raids are getting cut back, less bosses per tier, and they're straight up recycling dungeons to put into M+ rather than creating new ones.

        Anonymous

It's really not a great idea, WoW as a franchise is a dead and rotting husk, it's much more sensible to just keep the current game going with the lowest amount of investment possible to keep stringing the die hard addicts along while you take the funding from that and put it towards an entirely new project. Which is exactly what Blizzard themselves concluded and it is what they are trying to do with Odyssey. Even if that fails they will just retool and try something else, there is legitimately no reason to invest money into WoW at this point, it has virtually no growth potential due to where it ended up.

          Anonymous

Blizzdrones would cream their pants if a sequel was announced, a chance to start over in a brand new World of Warcraft where Blizzard try their best to avoid all the mistakes they made in the previous game. It would inevitably be a global sensation.

            Anonymous

You are vastly overestimating the amount of remaining Blizzdrones, especially ones that care about Warcraft. The whole problem with Warcraft is that it has a stagnant audience, it gets no new players and subsists purely off of people that have played it on and off since it began. That's not a sustainable long term project to invest money into, and Blizzard knows this which is why they've shifted development resources into other IPs and new projects. The success of Classic only reinforced this, the people who still like WoW would rather play an old and recycled version of the game, and if you supply that to them, they are happy. You don't have to put resources and development time into making something new if this is the market for your franchise, you just recycle the old content and make the same or more money with none of the investment costs.

I’m sort of ashamed to say I agree, being a half-blizzdrone. I’m a huge fan of the aesthetic and pleb enough to enjoy mmo gameplay but even then at least I haven’t paid for a blizz product in years.

              Anonymous

The reason their audience is stagnant is because they keep rehashing their old shit instead of making a brand new game set in the Warcraft universe. A new game will undoubtedly pull in a huge new audience that don't want to deal with all the baggage that an ancient game like WoW has. All they can do with Odyssey is to put 'the makers of World of Warcraft' on the box to sell it, wouldn't it be better to just make a new World of Warcraft for a new generation of players?

                Anonymous

Why would it "undoubtedly" pull in a huge new audience? Where are these new players that are going to care about this franchise going to come from? You need to understand, the only people that care about WoW are the ones still playing it, and since that audience is already captured, what is a new game going to get you? You might not even get the old audience if they dislike your new effort and in the process you may kill the old game too, leaving you with a lost revenue stream on one hand and a failed new product on the other. It's much better to keep the old product on life support while it continues to generate money from the existing and locked in audience while you fund new IPs that have the potential to bring in a new audience with no risk of alienating your old one.

People care about things that were popular in the past, like every new generation of Star Wars for example. Kids in the 2000s didn't give a shit about the old SW movies but they loved the prequels. Same thing is gonna happen here if they let it.

                Anonymous

It really won't. The fact you compared Warcraft, a dying franchise with a small niche (and ever dwindling) audience to the biggest movie franchise of all time is pretty hilarious, though. No one cares about Warcraft except the people still trapped in its bubble, and it's becoming less relevant every day that passes and that audience continues to diminish and age. The average WoW player is probably 35+ at this point, that's not a market you invest into for the long term growth of your company.

                Anonymous

WoW is the biggest MMORPG franchise of all time so the comparison is completely justified. The average Star Wars fan was also 35+ once the prequels came out.

                Anonymous

Star Wars legacy was still fully intact when the prequels came out, it was still remembered with love and passion by virtually anyone who had seen it and held up as one of the hallmarks of cinematic and box office success. Parents showed their kids the movies when they were growing up, further expanding the fanbase during the decades the series sat dormant.

Warcraft does not have that kind of legacy anymore, even the people who are still playing and invested into it admit that its in a terrible state and any sequel announcement would at best be met with cautious optimism by those people, and outright cynicism and "What the frick is Warcraft" by people outside of that bubble.

                Anonymous

That will all change once they actually announce the sequel, the hype will start generating and reach immeasurable levels. I have no doubts that the hype would reach insane levels and generate lots of interest as they dripfeed info to the public. The real problem is actually delivering a good product.

                Anonymous

You're just being way too optimistic. Think of it from a corporate perspective, why would you take the time to develop a new game in a stagnant and dying IP that may, if it fails, not only cost you the time and resources of the new project, but potentially also kill the audience of the product still generating revenue for you. As you just said, the problem is actually delivering a successful product, and if you're not certain your team can deliver that (and why would Actiblizz think their current team could pull it off), it makes far more sense to direct the resources being generated from your stagnant and dwindling IP into a new, fresh IP that can potentially garner a fresh, growing audience while you keep the old IP in a controlled state of decline, guaranteeing the highest level of profits over the longest period of time with the least amount of risk. This reasoning is why there is never going to be a WoW 2.

BECAUSE I HAVE HOPE GOD DAMNIT, I HAVE HOPE. I don't care about corporate agendas and maximizing profits, I just want to play video games!

                Anonymous

The purpose of a business is to make money. You having fun video games is merely a byproduct of this process, and incidental to the true goal, and indeed, unnecessary entirely should it be possible to secure profits without providing them, or even taking them away, as the market demands.

wow on gamepass will absolutely bring in new players trying it. Wow has always run on anything and even most console gamepass players should have something that can run it. The problem is that people who try wow are playing wow and they're not going to stay.

How so? Do you think they would make a better game if it was a sequel? Do you think they know how to make a better game? How do you know it would be better?

To be honest, even in the imaginary world where they made a game comparable to whatever you consider WOWs golden age, the fractured fanbase would likely kill both games.

If blizzard had anyone competent enough to make a sequel, the game wouldn't be this terrible. The solution is to kill it.
The only way any future good warcraft games could be made is if Microsoft decided "blizzard is shit, let's just dissolve the studio and give their IPs to someone competent" but that's not happening.

          Anonymous

Yea pretty much kill it or give it to somebody who would care about the ip, probably yoshi p would seeing how he used to love the game

            Anonymous

Its almost surely not happening though because despite how shit blizz it, the "Blizzard" name is still fairly well known and therefore valuable in and of itself and no suit would want to lose that asset. Kotick could had absorbed blizzard at any point in time and done just that, but instead he chose to keep them around, surely for that very reason. Microsoft's reasoning won't be very different; Blizzard is staying and warcraft is dead with them.

We've also already seen what happens when microsofts buys out game studios. MMOs can't die, there are still people playing LOTRO(I think an xpac for it came out last year even). In 50 years if any of us are somehow still alive people will STILL be playing world of warcraft in some form, the people playing it now will never stop. The player count might slowly dip but they spend less and less every year, at this point I wouldn't be surprised to learn that people work on warcraft for free in their spare time.

WoW can't be saved. They're too bogged down by the past, you can really tell the devs want to go in certain directions but simply can't because of existing lore/mechanics/player expectations.
They'd be better off making WoW 2 and rebooting the franchise. I know that didn't exactly work out for Everquest, but WoW has the name & clout to make it work.

Plus, looking at how they completely destroyed halo, their main IP, I wouldn't be surprised if wow disappears in two years since it's already on its death bed.

Reminder. There's an unironic Filipino who spends all day on Ganker and /vg/ pissing and shitting about warcraft and blizzard, calling anyone he doesn't like Barry and crying to the mods to delete posts he doesn't like, all while bootlicking gacha and demanding the west be more like Asia

The new corporate culture takes time to seep in and fix the older one
Just like Blizzard wasn't instantly ruined when activision took over but rather gradually eroded over multiple years so too it will take multiple years to fix it with this acquisition.

"Warcraft" as a franchise is bricked.
As a baseline, any new product needs to include all the new furgay races and 20 shades of Elves.

So even if they made "WoW 2" Vulpera, Pandas etc will be in the game from Day 1.
The community that those types of characters bring to this franchise is the reason I'll never touch anything to do with it again.

      >"Warcraft" as a franchise is bricked.
They just need to retcon and say that everything that has ever happened in WoW was in an alternate universe/timeline and that it's non-canon and then they can follow up with Warcraft 4.

Pandas were in Warcraft 3. WoW had Taurens as PC races from day one, and Worgen by Cataclysm. The game was always made by and for furries. It's good that you are rejecting it, but let's be honest, it was always there and part of the franchise.

The difference between those three and Vulpera/Dracthyr is that Pandaren/Tauren/Worgen were made for chuuni powermetal fantasy and happened to have degens beat it to them, where Vulpera and Dracthyr were specifically made for people to beat their meat at.

    >dude you get back in time, again... btw do you remember Arthas?
The devs are totally creatively bankrupt. It's like admitting you cannot produce anything worthwile and dickride someone else's success.

However the best part is the comments. Holy shit these are the people even here who defend WoW. The trailer looks absolutely horrid and you plause for it how good this crap looks. I'm actually convinced these people are done in life. There is absolutely nothing what can save them, they are completely enslaved by the game, and spiritually dead. It's legit scary to think about it, that I could have been one of these "people".

maybe Microsoft can knock some sense into whoever is managing Warcraft 3 Reforged?
MS managed to revitalize AOE's popularity into the 2020s while blizz killed Warcraft 3. Hopefully something will be fixed.

      Anonymous

W3 Reforged is never going to get fixed, since ActiBlizz refused to delay it or give it more budget when they realized what it would actually cost to properly rework the game. I find it very hard to believe that Microsoft is going to suddenly have a change of heart, especially since the well has already been poisoned and public opinion has turned against the remake/remaster/whatever you want to call it.

They'll probably make WoW and all it's expansions on gamepass along with no longer needing a monthly sub if you got gamepass ultimate. Also porting WoW to Xbox and making a steam release.

It wont save WoW but it'll give them a massive population boost.

To be honest, if CSGO2 (revamping an old game with new engine) is a success they will probably just launch WoW2 in a new engine with all content revamped (making old expansions actual worth to play at max level) and give more social features will probably save the game, but I feel like Blizzard is just as "minimum investment maitenance" in WoW right now, would not surprise if the budget for next expansion being similar to a new patch on Legion.

    WoW is beyond redemption.
Player base is bleeding, people are tired of the same old progression systems, M+ has been boring and annoying for expansions now, PvP has died, raids are getting way to autistic.
MMO's are NOT trendy any more, this isn't the year 2000's. They'll just keep WoW on life support with the same old repetitive content for as long as it's profitable.

Old MMOs like WoW aren't trendy anymore but new MMOs are, so they should make a modernized sequel to WoW.

It would nice to see a clean reboot that rolls the lore back to Warcraft 3 and pretends WoW never happened. Redesign everything from the ground up and make it feel like you are playing as a unit in an RTS game. Actual world PvP warefare. You should be able to burn cities to the ground.
