Anything by Snoy since Uncharted 4. You can only climb yellow rocks, even though that one rock comes to your knees. The new Jedai games are also guilty of this.

The yellow paint thing is peak midwit game design, you go to game design college and they talk about exegetic elements , so you can't just have a "gamey" icon popping up and telling people to climb or break the thing, "of course I'll just paint it a different color, according to the color theory 101 class I had to attend to yellow is the most visible color to the brain, I'm an actual genius!" and every game designer in the room applauds you and then they start all doing the same thing, because they all go to the same schools and talks.
This "suddenly" became an issue because it takes some time for a trend to form, there's always a lag in the public discourse as knowledge disseminates, I'm sure people were weirded out the first game they saw it, but now that it's multiple popular games it clearly has become a thing and people should be allowed to express their thoughts about it.

They've conditioned players to associate yellow with interaction, so now everything interactable must be yellow or it will be ignored.

That's an inverse scenario. An analogue would be you getting stuck because you won't even attempt to shoot a yellow or orange barrel.

why even have the log there at that point? I can kind of understand highlighting the only ladder on a large ledge yellow, or the one door out of several that opens, even if I think it's kind of lazy.
but why go to all the trouble of blocking a narrow path and then putting a big label on it that says
        >actually the path isn't blocked

I could swear people were b***hing about it ten years ago when it showed up in the Tomb Raider reboot.

Every fricking multiplayer game insists on some levelling system now, which only ever ends up being an indicator of how much time I've spent playing the game. No I don't want how addicted I am to a game to be fricking advertised to everyone, especially when it causes homosexuals to go "hurr you should have done better given how much you've played of it", it actually makes me want to refrain from playing the game so that the level doesn't get too high which I'm pretty fricking sure is achieving the exact opposite the game dev wanted.

The worst part is that we know game devs only do this shit as some skinner-box addiction hook bullshit. Which makes it insulting that the game insinuates that I would play just to see a bar fill up.

      Anonymous

Its even worse when you realize its meant to fake game mastery. They timegate player options and critical functions behind the level up system so they can pretend you're getting better at the game, when really everyone plateaued at the fps skill level years ago. The first three to four hours playing BF3 and 4 is wasted on low xp matches trying to get all the tools to actually play your class.

I care. The best way to get the industry to stop having these fricking phases is to complain about them. QTEs used to be common, enough people rightfully called them out so the industry stopped having them, it's funny how RE4 remake basically traded one cancerous trend for another.

Yeah, sadly the only way to get any sort of message to game publishers and devs is to scream about something endlessly.
Being polite just gets you ignored.

Eagle vision, Witcher vision, Detective mode. That gets complained about now and then, but I don't necessarily hate it as much as this yellow paint where an anon explained it well the other day how they try to make it look diegetic, as if yellow paint just being on everything you can interact with is ordinary in the world you're playing in, while it used to just be a fricking button prompt would appear and that was more than enough, but NO IT'S TOO GAMEY NOW AND NEEDS TO BE REALISTIC LIKE YELLOW PAINT CONVENIENTLY BEING SMEARED ON EVERY DESTRUCTIBLE OR CLIMBABLE OBJECT.

The idea of "game design" now being this academic thing which is studied in game developer school and taught by non-authorities with zero credentials, forcing developers to adhere to a completely arbitrary set of "best practices" that aren't based on any sort of creativity or historical context.

      Anonymous

If it was actually based on any historical context, all games would have exactly the things twitterinas hate (lives, timers, bunch of enemies etc), this is just dumb people incapable of playing games getting a voice for some moronic reason.

        Anonymous

Historical context is largely centered around player trust. The complete lack of player trust (that is, building a game with the assumption that players have never played a video game before in their entire lives and must be given an explicit tutorial that says "tilt analog stick to move") is almost entirely responsible for the scaffold of annoying an unnecessary design principles that plague modern games, including yellow paint.

It is one thing to "guide" players by designing your early levels in a way that promote experimentation and organically introduce concepts players will need to be familiar with in later parts of the game. It's another thing to assume players shouldn't be expected to learn anything and must always have their hands held from start to finish for the sake of accessibility or some shit.

Either you'd try to interact with the sign like a door or hit it with the crowbar because those were the two ways you interacted with things in games at the time.
