First ep left a bad impression with a needy, indecisive and introverted main character who couldn't even speak her mind, that turned off A LOT of people because the first episode sets the tone for the series and there was no indication in those 22 minutes that she would bring in anything but baby step achievements, which further episodes continued to confirm. Roy was expected to bring balance but he turned out to be a normal kid who curls up when faced with mildly threatening people.
What really kills the hype for this show is the fact the main characters get plot handouts. They're nothing special themselves, or at least the show itself doesn't think so, so they're given macguffins with the one purpose of getting the audience to pay attention to them. Their entire plot relevance revolves around their macguffins, even their so called goals only exist for the sake of the thingamajigs. That's why they cannot measure up to any previous MC or companion, not even to Max.

OLM knew what they were doing by cancelling the ashnime which is one of TV Tokyo's 5 most profitable franchises, the ashnime is sold to ~100 countries worldwide, to different platforms and channels to air.
If it was about the profits/ratings, OLM would have just rebooted Ash.
This new anime will realistically never achieve even remotely similar network sales so it's really aimed only at Japan, if they were going for an international audience they would have kept Ash in one format or another.
