This game will never get DLC because mainline Mario games rarely do, but there is such a big part of me that wants it so bad. The lack of a secret character just seems really jarring to me. My main thing is this: is it fair to rag on a Mario game for not living up to the creativity of its old days? Yes, because it was literally marketed as something that lived up to that. But that being said, it is at least better than the void that is the New series, and things like the badge system do provide an extra bit of spice to an otherwise bland omelette of a game.

I had some problems on that level, there were two things I think causing it. 1, I was trying to change direction and I suspect my direction input was coming before my jump input so I think I was detaching from the wall before jumping. 2, the one block tiles were a bit dodgy, seems the edges of walls don't like to play nice with wall jumps.

Not really, after you complete the final level you unlock the last badge (which change sounds to some guy doing them).
The only thing you get for collecting stuff are medals in your save file for completion sake. There are 6 medals, you get them by beating the game, collecting all seeds, all purple 10-coins, all top flags, all badges, and all standees.

While they are gimmicks, I find them pretty creative and you're never quite sure what's going to happen, despite some of them repeating throughout the game. In general, the amount of ideas that were scrammed into this game is commendable.
They somewhat remind me of the power-up in Kirby Epic Yarn but without the motion controls for some, and some others are just basic shit like slow/fast, space gravity, and plenty of other things.
I'm not particularly selling them well but I thought they were really fun and never felt either annoying or frustrating

I like Nintendo games and have poor self control so I'm emulating.
I already bought my Nintendo coupons and will be getting it on Switch this Friday.

The setpieces to get the first wonder seed of most stages feel too setpiece-y. Don't get me wrong a lot of mario stages are railroads but at least they hide it better. Here it's "alright what the gimmick this time".

About 15 hours to 100%, took about 10 to just get through the game normally.
I put a piece of tape on my tv over where Mario would be at full speed. 1 bounce off the pink one and one off of a green one after. Everything else in the level was reasonable but this part just felt cheap.

I went through and collected all 10 coins, seeds, and top of the flags on every single level. Possibly one or all of these conditions.

It's fricked up that they reused the physics of NSMB but other than that it's alright. Love the sound design the most actually, how you jumping is an acoustic string, powerups spawning are a flute doing the normal sound and you ground pounding is a drum

because its not that exciting. the game uses a rhythm gimmick that is used for a few stages for the final boss and you spend a couple minutes dodging and jumping at the right time to hit the boss

I tried rerunning the level and I feel dumb as a brick. I tried with Mario instead and the level just ends here. None of the pipes do anything. No obvious order of hitting the music blocks does anything

credits still playing as i type this, fun little experience. very ideal 2d platformer. somehow something like Klonoa still blows me away more. but Nintendo's pacing with 400 devs is an unbeatable level of polish and sheen. emulated NSMB WiiU and it was such soulless shit compared to this, so its good to see they finally put in the effort
That's because Klonoa is a narrative platformer, it's really basic but the story helps it stand out.
Also play Super Luigi U, it uses the soulless mood of NSMBU and actually makes pretty fun levels. Good official romhack
i skipped most the narrative, I just love the snappy mechanics and level design, I watched it later and I know everyone cries at it and adores it, its a cool dream-based plot but its just too kiddish for me to care for a second. will check out luigi U, didn't know it held any regard
there's a waterfall on the left you missed, keep going up and down the streams until you hit the invisible blocks, its kind of bad design but thats as bad as it gets throughout the whole game

I'm at the end of world 2 now. At any point do I unlock the ability to wear more than one badge? I like having all these abilties but it sucks only being to able use 1 per level.

Emulated a few levels and stopped to wait for the full release I do like it. Only emulated it because I'm tired of these butthole devs (not just Nintendo literally every AAA developer) not giving out demos. It should be a god damn requirement. Rant aside I like the game I'm not a fan of the elephant form its kinda whatever but at least its something new. The badges are a nice addition I only got to use the floating hat one but I know there's a bunch more you can get and the wonder seeds changing the levels temporarily is really cool it kinda reminds me of Sonic CD in a way with the past and future gimmick but here its more time based and hectic which is really fun. I'm hoping there's something in the post-game or just something in the world similar to Star Road and Champion's Road I absolutely loved that and maybe even a secret unlockable character but I won't hold my breath on the latter.

smb3 has a higher average difficulty in its standard levels than any other 2d mario.
It came out in 1989 and was one of the first platformers to exist, so developers were in uncharted territory.
Things have flattened out and the skill level of an average player has been made clear. If you want challenge play kaizo, that's not what Mario is about.

It isn't, the game teaches you about invisible blocks early on and it's obvious when you have to start searching for one. It's not even like they make you search a whole level since you can't scroll the screen backwards, if you come to some area that seems otherwise impossible to cross, you know to start looking for invisible blocks.

right, i agree with this. i played through the whole game and found it rather blase. if a game is boring, it is not good. it failed its job of being an entertainment product.
the only times i was actually engaged was when a level had teeth. hence my assumption that a more challenging game would've been more engaging overall for me.
we could look at any iterative sequel and say "it's just the same x and that's all". re4r came out this year and absolutely fits the definition of "it's the same resident evil and that's all" but i do not mind that at all and found it very engaging. the core design is stronger than 2d mario somehow.
I think RE4R did enough to make itself feel like an upgrade so that feeling of boredom didn't happen. It's presentation was very well done as well. FF7R is entirely different fron most games before it and has a slight KH2 feel for obvious reasons despite the inability to jump which is thankfully sort of changed in Rebirth.
Wonder and Superstars both have the feeling of "It's just this thing again" but Superstars gets more of break from me because Mania, despite it's slightly different level design, still felt too close to the old stuff for me. Overall, I'd give Wonder an 8 and Superstars an 8.5.

Why are you seething so hard little guy? You don't have to be a speedrunner to appreciate deep movement mechanics. A lot of Mario fans play SMW or SMB3 hacks all the time, which will test your movement skills just like speedrunning. Honestly I think the movement in this game is ok, mainly since I discovered you can chain bubble jumps (although it feels like the game has a height cap that forces you to fall after 4 or so), but the heavily nerfed spinjump really limits it. If a game has shitty movement it severely limits its replayability. See the Mario Galaxy games.

there are levels that lock in your badge, the final level switches the badge on you for challenge segments with each badge, and in standard levels they work exactly like powerups have since the beginning of mario - never, ever required to proceed, but can offer huge advantages in safety, speed, or just being really goddamn fun

Emulator bug? It happens at certain Y values and disappears if I move further up. Doesn't look like a graphical bug but rather some debug tool that the emulator triggers by accident.

Sisters.. Just enter the stage as different characters to make character specific blocks to appear. If it is the one I had trouble finding you just pick far left toad and run to the bottom part of the stage. But it might be other ones.

I think a key feature that keeps me engaged compared to the NSMB series is that they mixed some harder levels into each world and trickle in Special World access like SMW. NSMB the early levels are painfully boring and difficult to play through and it takes until the last world or post-game to get fun, if I can even push myself to get there. Being able to thrown in a little more spice as I go in this one keeps me from getting so bored, and keeps the easy levels from becoming as much of a drag.
