aren't the new D&D rules that they're removing "half-elf" as a distinct entity and just making new rules for halfbreeds in general, letting you mix and match traits of any 2 races
No. They are trying to gas light you with that. The fiction they want to portray is that you can be a half giant, half halfling. The reality is that you are a halfling, but you take the giant stats. You don't mix them together, you pick one for flavor and the other for stats. I hope you like playing a medium sized giant, which you could already do in 5e. Less choices, brilliant.
