Boss uses an attack, player uses R2 + Triangle to activate a dodge counter. Upon successful execution, boss goes into a time freeze and the counter is executed which then segues into normal attack combos.

what is royal guard?
Royal Guard is not a real counter system. Royal guard builds up a resource as you block/parry which you can then spend.
It's an addition on top of the core system but not intrinsic to it.
Sekiro is built completely around the posture bar and deflect/mikiri counter. FF XVI is built around a stagger meter that is broken through dodge/parry counter usage at which point you enter a +20% damage burst window while the enemy is stunned and their stagger bar refills to max.

If they got rid of the combo point meter thing that keeps coming up on the right and stopped using FF13's font, this would honestly not look that bad.
font is probably placeholder and will be changed later since it's still a year from release also reckon they'll add the option to disable combo point meter in the settings
I'm sure it's something you'll be able to turn off in the hud options. It serves no gameplay purpose other than showing what combos you succesfully pulled off. Same with the damage numbers.
