So we are all in agreement that this game is the story of the Mario Bros.

So we are all in agreement that this game is the story of the Mario Bros. going through the sewers of Brooklyn, getting lost, and eventually coming out in the Mushroom Kingdom. Right?

Honestly, after watching the Super Mario Bros movie, I figured it was a case of them drowning in the sewers and having wild dreams while in a coma. If Super Mario Bros 2 is canon, then crazy fever dreams are not out of the question.

Considering that SMB 3 is stage play, we can assume that we don't even play as Mario and Luigi but rather as actors playing them.
It's was staged in memory of two brave plumbers who died from methane explosion under Brooklyn.

      DID YOU KNOW GAMING?

What I dont fricking get is apparently Mario Bros 3 was a stage play and yet Bowser crashed his airship from it in Dinosaur Land. A sequel to the state play? Miyamoto is fricking insane? Probably the later.

I think it was supposed to be just a theme, like how Yoshi's Island is all crayons and shit. It wasn't a play in-universe, it was a play for the player

This. The game has the aesthetics of a stage play, but still depicts events that actually happened. Other Mario games such as Mario Party 2 and the first two Paper Mario games did the same sort of thing.

Maybe Bowser pulled a Blues Brothers and wrecked a ship for the play. Truly dedicated to his craft.

What if the Super Mario Bros games were actually about self-hating Italians? I mean, in SMB1 they are stomping on the heads of goombahs and killing them.

It happens at the end of Donkey Kong 94. Donkey suspiciously has mushrooms that make him the size of King Kong at the end and when you defeat him you find a pipe on a rooftop in Brooklyn and and go down it. Cue SMB1 in the Mushroom Kingdom.

DK 94 is another stage show. Mario is seen warming up the audience in the demo by showing off his moves, and the ending has the whole cast getting together for a group photo. Plus the whole game is littered with size-changing poison mushrooms that shrink Mario, so the game is at least set in the Mushroom World.

No, the game has no ending. So Mario Bros is the story of Mario and Luigi getting lost in the sewers and eventually getting killed by the critters running around while fighting each other over the last of the supplies they brought with them.
SMB is Mario and Luigi living their dreams in heaven. They lived as sad plumbers who died in a sewer, but in heaven they are the heroes who save the damsel in distress while fighting and beating the critters that killed them.
SMB2J is continued adventures in heaven. SMB2 or SMBUSA is a dream Mario had one night back when he was alive after too much booze.
SMB3 is Mario and Luigi's fantasies in heaven getting more and more unrealistic and magical as they expand the fictional Mushroom Kingdom they have created for themselves.
SMW is Mario and Luigi giving up on any semblance of reality and diving into their fantasy with talking dragons and simple capes granting the ability to fly.
SMW2 is Mario and Luigi attempting to tell the story of their early years after their minds had been warped from thousands of years of SMW-style adventures.
Super Mario Land 1 and 2, Dr. Mario, Donkey Kong, it's all insane adventures Mario goes on in his heaven. Luigi's Mansion and Mario is Missing is Luigi doing the same thing. Super Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, all the same thing. DK94 is Mario going back to the Donkey Kong adventure fantasy and expanding it into a larger adventure.
The entire reason there is no continuity between Mario games is because Mario has been dead since the first game. Each sequel is just another entertaining adventure he creates for himself to enjoy in heaven, living the life he wished he could have lived. So he works as a doctor fighting illness, travels to distant lands, goes into space, shoots fireballs from his hands, drives as a professional racer, swims underwater for ages, competes in the Olympics, flies through the air like a superhero, then saves the princess at the end of the day.

The game ends when you reach 980,000 points. Mario doesn't die.

Same ending you get if Mario dies. Gee, what does that imply?

Dark World is the timeline where Bowser succeeds in SMW. This is why you find chain chomps in Zelda. It probably splits to N64 where Mario succeeds and it's unclear whether they appear in SMB3 because it's a theater as we don't see them in SMW.

When Bowser succeeds, he unleashes an age of darkness. The whole world becomes uninhabitable and becomes the Dark World. You can see how he reigns in the Valley of Bowser and that simply goes on as he isn't stopped by Mario.

As Oot establishes, both a timeline where Mario succeeds and one where Mario fails can coexist (this is the 'game over'). From the perspective of Sages, who are in neither, both exist simultaneously. When using their dimensional powers, they tapped into the Marioverse and used the uninhabited one to 'seal' Ganon.

"Originally, I arbitrarily decided that Mario Bros. has the brothers being active in the underground of New York, which is full of pipes, probably in Brooklyn in New York. Donkey Kong is also set in New York. In Super Mario Bros., those pipes lead to the mysterious forest (Mushroom Kingdom)."
