There doesn’t seem to be any stable middle class populations in the sonic universe. Democracy’s need a literate, land owning middle class voter base in order to remain stable. Middle class people are incentivized to vote in a manner that will keep their otherwise precarious status existent and stable. The poor and disenfranchised with just vote in people who will give goodies for short term power game while in the long term screwing over the livelihood of the republic. Enlightened despots are the next best option in terms of quality of life and freedom for the average person.
