                Well in this case, technical limitations is a real factor, since on actual Nintendo DS hardware, only one map cell is loaded at a time. That means draw distance would be significantly more noticable froma third person perspective. All those 3D map viewers you see online are able to render the whole map at once, but the DS was not able to do that.

        This image reminds me how every time throught generations when hardware resolutions went up I wished 2D games would just expand how much you see. Rather than increasing rsolution of assets just let you see more of the map.like a 256x256 tile would still take up 256x256 pixels even on a 4k screen.         The thing is, SV cities get really close to this feeling, they're very big but ACTUALLY feel big and feel like a CITY or big town. The problem is there's fucking nothing to do in them besides buy food and gym shit.
        The best example is the electric gym city, that city was legitimately beautiful to see in the distance while I was just fucking around doing tera battles to fill out my team.
        I expected it to look shitty once I got there but the layout was GOOD it was big without being spacious and all the NPC's made it feel big and lived in. There were alleyways and nooks and crannies that MADE SENSE.
        But there's fucking nothing to do in it, there's a DOCK with BOAT but you can't GO anywhere or talk to anyone. There's a giant building with signs to indicate EACH building but there's fucking nothing in them.

        It's painfully sad because the city is breathtaking, but it's nearly hollow. It's the exact opposite of SwSH where everything looks like it's so much bigger than it is.

            Random encounters fucking suck man, I hate wasting 30 minutes aimlessly walking in circles just because I wanted to use a Raichu or something, with absolutely no way to influence its odds of spawning, and because it’s such low odds, you could easily spend a lot longer there. Overworld roaming Pokémon at least save you time looking around and don’t interrupt you with overly long text boxes and battle-entry animations.

    If any marketer from Gamefreak is listening, NO. This is the wrong message to be giving Gamefreak.

    Gamefreak is capable of good 3D when they want to put in the effort. Key word being effort. What sadly may happen is that marketers will see SV perform poorly and decide nobody wants 3D environments and go back to 2D completely. That would be a huge waste of potential when theyve shown us they are capable. All we need for TPCi to do is cut down on some of the red tape and deadlines in production so Gamefreak can see their full potential. And maybe have them scale the environments down a smidge.

    I do think if they stuck with 2D, even if they moved from pixel to handdrawn, that sales wouldn't do as hot and you'd have people bitching they should go 3D.       Well elephant in the room here, but most of the development staff from the original games likely moved on to green pastures or no longer represents the bulk of the development team of today. Game Freak has made its claim to fame as a scratching post for game development graduates in its latter years, so a lot of fresh meat technically is better equipped to handle 3D modeling than it is to do dot graphics or 2D animation, speaking strictly from a skillset perspective.
