Starfield is very ambitious, but you can still be a peer competitor without doing exactly what another game does so long as the competitor is also ambitiously liberating or provides a feeling similar to whatever Bethesda does. If Starfield is, at it's base, a janky Bethesda game with a similar game feel as Fo4, and if a lot of it's novelty is lost because No Man's Sky exists, then it might not be seen AS impressive to people.
This year, that comparable competitor is Totk, which received huge praise for how liberatingly ambitious that game is as well.

I say this because Fallout 4 got, on average, worse reviews than Skyrim and Witcher 3. This was mostly because critics were souring on Bethesda level jankiness and bugginess. Fo4 has on average 80s on metacritic meanwhile iirc Skyrim and Witcher 3 average 90s.

Starfield is very ambitious, but you can still be a peer competitor without doing exactly what another game does so long as the competitor is also ambitiously liberating or provides a feeling similar to whatever Bethesda does. If Starfield is, at it's base, a janky Bethesda game with a similar game feel as Fo4, and if a lot of it's novelty is lost because No Man's Sky exists, then it might not be seen AS impressive to people.
This year, that comparable competitor is Totk, which received huge praise for how liberatingly ambitious that game is as well.

Well you said the critics were quite sour about fo4 but if they didn't like it why would they vote for it over MGS5 or bloodborne, both of which are concensus brilliant games. But fo4 still got more votes than them by quite a distance percentage wise (over double the votes of MGS5).
That was a mistake on my part to say that critics were sour on Fo4 as if they didn't like the game, I should have said they were 'relatively' more sour on the game. It still received great reviews, but generally critics had some sour feeling toward it compared to previous games. My bad.
I say this because Fallout 4 got, on average, worse reviews than Skyrim and Witcher 3. This was mostly because critics were souring on Bethesda level jankiness and bugginess. Fo4 has on average 80s on metacritic meanwhile iirc Skyrim and Witcher 3 average 90s.

Breath of the Wild saw a bigger jump from Animal Crossing coming out and the gigantic spike in Switch sales there, though arguably it coming out as the Switch's launch exclusive meant it could only really sell as fast as Switches could get out to market even in Holiday 2017.
Conversely something like Last of Us 2 gets obscured because it went from 4 million on launch window to 10 million two years later and there's been no meaningful tracking on that part beyond vague NPD milestones, on top of how often PS4/PS5 games gets a discount.
Nothing really but it increases sales and the studio would probably get more funding/creative freedom for their next game.

They're up against a game so well optimized it's borderline witchcraft, it runs on ancient hardware with worse specs than a phone. There's no way Starfield manages to be a good game, bug-free and with stable performance, all together while being developed by Bethesda of all people.
