Starfield is another todd howard rpg. bethesday is the gamefreak of the west at this point rehashing the same formula over and over. im bored even thinking about it. lol

I'm a snoy but Yoshi P comes off as having an inferiority complex toward Westerners. He tries to be more Western than Western developers. Neither deserve GOTY, should be between TOTK or BG3 instead. But FF16 is at least polished and refined at what it sets out to do.

What did Matsuno do that made him act like this? I say he has an inferiority complex toward Westerners because of his blind obsession with aping Western trends (the game is heavily inspired by Game of Thrones and shit) and stripping out RPG mechanics to make it an RPG-lite action game like a lot of Western stuff (though DMC was also an influence). He also despises the JRPG term.

      FF16
Starfield is the same game that Bethesda has always made. It has the same strengths and the same weaknesses.
FF16 has traded all of Final Fantasy's strengths to pursue a middling version of a game and genre that gets cracked wide open at the 30% mark and you cease to learn anything new. It ends up being a game with none of its predecessors' strengths and entirely new flaws
It's astonishing that a DLC campaign for a Switch exclusive is a better RPG experience than FF16

It's funny because Yoshi P built the Golden Saucer in XIV. So he clearly knows that mini games can be fun but he seems to believe that FFXVI is too serious for them (when many of the side quests are perfectly silly as is, like the one about the Dalimil baker making a miniature version of Drake's Fang)

Starfield is garbage but ffxvi is worse. Anyone who defends it in any capacity needs a lobotomy. It combines the worst shonen-slop writing with an incredibly shoddy attempt to ape game of thrones that they just give up on halfway through anyways. The character development is nonexistent, literally none. Sidequests are somehow even worse. The entire LostWing/Quinten arc might be the worst sidequest in any video game ever. The person who wrote that absolute trash fire needs to be fired and blacklisted from the industry forever.

The gameplay is pure button mashing to the point that I had to stop myself from using some abilities to keep the game from getting way too easy. On top of that the game looks like a remaster of a ps3 game and it manages to still run like shit despite that. Embarrassing.

FFXVI would be acceptable if the spectacle boss fights actually made up any significant portion of the game, but there are only 3 good ones in a 50+ hour game. Having to slog through 49 hours of literal 1/10 dogshit for 1 hour of 6/10 spectacle boss fights isn't acceptable lmao.

I'm of the opinion that the Eikon stuff should have been something the player can choose to do and they'd have to consider the repercussions of their actions on the surrounding area.
If the idea is that Eikons are like Nuclear weapons, then that should be expressed through gameplay.
If the idea is taht crystals are like oil and that their loss results in significant strife for local areas, that should be expressed in gameplay too.
There's more to gameplay than just pure combat but YoshiP and his crew seem to not care about that with FF16

Clive's mechanics are better than Ifrit honestly. They should've allowed us to turn into a smol Ifrit rather than just a basic DMC4 Devil Trigger though. Or just copy more from DMC5 and allow players to fill SDT bar and turn into smol Ifrit that way.

interesting how 300k on steam translates to 50k reviews and just gamepass and xbox have like 1000 total, hows that work with 10 million players?

Starfield isn't a flop like FFXVI was

It'll probably be TOTK or BG3 rather than those two shitheaps, but still I would not be surprised if something like Starfield won considering Bethdrones, my personal game of the year was AC6 but I can't see it possibly winning

I tried to get into AC6. Wallclimber made me Uninstall. Not a bad game and customization stuff is insane. But I just wasn't vibing with it.

Starfield was supposed to be the next Skyrim, so it is definitely more of a flop imo. Final Fantasy has been in decline since after 10.

Fair point, I wasn't counting the MMO. Yeah, FF14 is basically keeping the entire franchise's reputation alive all by itself.

Fair reply, it's overlooked a lot that if it wasn't for the mmo and milking ffvii SE would be sunk because of how many moronic decisions they've made over the years.

I don't get the appeal of Starfield. The engine is so archaic and a lot of the issues from games dating back to Oblivion are still present in the game. I get it, the game is prettier I still feel like I'm playing the same game that looks better.

Accidentally hit an NPC? The entire universe is after you just like in Skyrim. I keep getting burned expecting some revolutionary revamped engine that never happens.

      Anonymous

It has no appeal, all they had to do was looking into No Man's Sky for 1.5 minutes. Starfield is a space exploration game with no space exploration in it.
      >inb NMS is boring shit
No Man's Skyrim is even worse.

no man’s sky exploration manages to be less varied and more boring than Starfield, don’t kid yourself

FFXVI might just have the worst writing and story I've ever seen in a AAA game, and that includes some absolute dogshit. People who haven't played it don't understand just how truly awful the characters are and how riddled with plot holes it is. The writing can spend hours going on the most random and pointless tangents with no payoff.

OP, what the frick? The biggest bust competition is between Forspoken and Redfall

  33. 8 months ago

Neither, both of those games are mediocre at worst, bust of the year would be either forspoken, redfall, or that lotr game, games that came out and were universally agreed to be shit by everyone.

If Starfield actually wins goty it'll be worse than when TLoU2 won, because it's one thing for the pseudo-avant-garde bullshit oscar bait that the academy constantly jerks itself off to winning the oscars but Starfield winning means they gave they gave the prize to something that is literally only safe and mediocre.

      Anonymous

It's not gonna win, don't worry.
It'd be lucky to get nominated, but Geoff has always been fricky like that using nominations are bones to series or companies that have vocal fanbases. Ideally it would be Hi Fi Rush getting nominated but whatever.
Starfield winning is a 0% possibility. The real danger is FF16 winning, because it's entirely possible. The two front-runners are probably BG3 and TOTK, but FF16 has a chance if they don't want to give it to Nintendo again. But BG3 is honestly benefitting a lot from both recency bias + the staggered release schedule of console ports keeping it in the collective mind-space
I wager Spiderman 2 will also be nominated, hopefully won't win

Did cyberpunk even get nominated for anything big in 2020?

          Anonymous

          Nope lol
Starfield isn't a Cyberpunk situation because Cyberpunk lost any real nomination due to how completely FRICKED it was technically. Game quality won't lose you a GOTY nomination, but technical quality will.
So if Cyberpunk released in the state it's in today and only on next-gen, it would probably get a nomination but it wouldn't win. A game needs some SERIOUS wave-making to get the GOTY from Geoff. And it usually needs to be AAA, since Hades lost in 2021 to TLOU2 despite Hades being the far more favored game to get the nomination

Geoff kind of lost all remaining respect from me for selling out to Sony so fricking unashamedly with the whole TLoU2 simultaneously winning goty and every category under the sun and GoW thing but they proved to have at least SOME integrity left when they gave Elden Ring the goty over GoW 2, even if of course GoW 2 got into a big bunch of other categories as well.

Starfield. FFXVI is actually a good game despite all odds. It's could have been a legendary game but at the very least it has pulled FF from the freefall it's been experiencing for 15 years.

    Immortals of Aveum.
If you've never heard of it, then you'll be even more surprised to learn it was an AAA game released a month ago. It was such a failure that the studio already laid off half its staff.
