Starfield is the same game that Bethesda has always made. It has the same strengths and the same weaknesses.
FF16 has traded all of Final Fantasy's strengths to pursue a middling version of a game and genre that gets cracked wide open at the 30% mark and you cease to learn anything new. It ends up being a game with none of its predecessors' strengths and entirely new flaws

I'm of the opinion that the Eikon stuff should have been something the player can choose to do and they'd have to consider the repercussions of their actions on the surrounding area.
If the idea is that Eikons are like Nuclear weapons, then that should be expressed through gameplay.
If the idea is taht crystals are like oil and that their loss results in significant strife for local areas, that should be expressed in gameplay too.
There's more to gameplay than just pure combat but YoshiP and his crew seem to not care about that with FF16

FFXVI would be acceptable if the spectacle boss fights actually made up any significant portion of the game, but there are only 3 good ones in a 50+ hour game. Having to slog through 49 hours of literal 1/10 dogshit for 1 hour of 6/10 spectacle boss fights isn't acceptable lmao.
I'm of the opinion that the Eikon stuff should have been something the player can choose to do and they'd have to consider the repercussions of their actions on the surrounding area.
If the idea is that Eikons are like Nuclear weapons, then that should be expressed through gameplay.
If the idea is taht crystals are like oil and that their loss results in significant strife for local areas, that should be expressed in gameplay too.
There's more to gameplay than just pure combat but YoshiP and his crew seem to not care about that with FF16
Clive's mechanics are better than Ifrit honestly. They should've allowed us to turn into a smol Ifrit rather than just a basic DMC4 Devil Trigger though. Or just copy more from DMC5 and allow players to fill SDT bar and turn into smol Ifrit that way.

I tried to get into AC6. Wallclimber made me Uninstall. Not a bad game and customization stuff is insane. But I just wasn't vibing with it.

I don't get the appeal of Starfield. The engine is so archaic and a lot of the issues from games dating back to Oblivion are still present in the game. I get it, the game is prettier I still feel like I'm playing the same game that looks better.
Accidentally hit an NPC? The entire universe is after you just like in Skyrim. I keep getting burned expecting some revolutionary revamped engine that never happens.
It has no appeal, all they had to do was looking into No Man's Sky for 1.5 minutes. Starfield is a space exploration game with no space exploration in it.

FFXVI might just have the worst writing and story I've ever seen in a AAA game, and that includes some absolute dogshit. People who haven't played it don't understand just how truly awful the characters are and how riddled with plot holes it is. Starfield winning is a 0% possibility. The real danger is FF16 winning, because it's entirely possible. The two front-runners are probably BG3 and TOTK, but FF16 has a chance if they don't want to give it to Nintendo again. But BG3 is honestly benefitting a lot from both recency bias + the staggered release schedule of console ports keeping it in the collective mind-space

Starfield isn't a Cyberpunk situation because Cyberpunk lost any real nomination due to how completely FRICKED it was technically. Game quality won't lose you a GOTY nomination, but technical quality will.
So if Cyberpunk released in the state it's in today and only on next-gen, it would probably get a nomination but it wouldn't win. A game needs some SERIOUS wave-making to get the GOTY from Geoff. And it usually needs to be AAA, since Hades lost in 2021 to TLOU2 despite Hades being the far more favored game to get the nomination
Geoff kind of lost all remaining respect from me for selling out to Sony so fricking unashamedly with the whole TLoU2 simultaneously winning goty and every category under the sun and GoW thing but they proved to have at least SOME integrity left when they gave Elden Ring the goty over GoW 2, even if of course GoW 2 got into a big bunch of other categories as well.
