The reboot technically has more soul because the animators were clearly not formally trained in the visual arts and are just "doing what they love." The animation in the original 90s series was far too polished, and the manga story was too well adapted for a TV show. The 90s show was also stylistically distinct from the manga, which anime fans strongly dislike. How unfaithful!
