PC players used to just play PC games, and the "console warring" was solely the console players.
Then Steam came along, the viral marketing stuff happened creating some weird "PC Master Race" bullshit, now there's a non-negligible number of PC players who engage in the console war BS as well these days.
It even happens between people all playing on a PC, where they'll devote themself to a specific digital store and act like that store is the actual platform instead of just a random 3rd party app you're forced to have open while you game.

There are good reasons to only like steam now, from the fact that when you buy a game companies (Ubisoft, EA) make you install a second digital store, to the fact that companies (EGS) won't let you install the games you bought on your opertating system unless it's windows. It's not console war BS, it is companies trying to frick you over constantly. It is not simply choosing between one and the other. You don't buy a game on PS5 and then the developers force you to play it on Xbox.

There isn't a good reason for Steam to force you to have their app open in order to play their games, other than forcing you to feel obligated to devote yourself to their store.

In game private chat, both text and voice, notifications for both games you play and groups you're in and the online status of friends you have to play games with, input handling so whenever a developer is too lazy to put in proper controller support you aren't stuck with an xbox controller being able to tab into a web browser in game to look up shit or play music, steam tunneling you so you aren't exposing your ip to mentally moronic spergs who doxx some random Valve server because you aren't playing the Meta in some casual game.
I get the bar for competitors is literally 1.000 feet underground but there's entirely reasonable reasons for steam to be running in the background.

I'm actually very curious what Microsoft and Sony will do, since we're actually hitting a point where the amount of money and time it takes to get the sort of graphics that is significantly better than prior generation is becoming too much to justify. There going to need more to draw people in for any future console generations besides simply more powerful hardware.
I mean, both Sony and Nintendo have found their niche. Sony is more consistent in terms of sales every generation, while Nintendo is either selling gangbusters or flopping hard. That said, I do hope more AA games start being made, like in PS1/PS2 era.
Why doesn't China enter the console wars? Seems weird that they haven't really tried, feels like a big untapped market for them.
It'd be really hard to actually move hardware like that in the US and there's very little real interest in actually making compelling games from China.
