Nah, Nintendo has enough slush money to survive multiple failed consoles.

So... who won the console wars at the end?
Sony. Since the PS3 they start out with no games but always wind up winning overall. Nintendo wins for doing it's own thing, but for general non-gimmick gaming, Sony is the overall winner since the PS1. I don't like it, they get stupid when they think they are assured victory in a generational console war, so I hope someone steps in soon to be a threat because MS just keeps shitting the bed.
This is another change I wasn't prepared for.
PC players used to just play PC games, and the "console warring" was solely the console players.
Then Steam came along, the viral marketing stuff happened creating some weird "PC Master Race" bullshit, now there's a non-negligible number of PC players who engage in the console war BS as well these days.
It even happens between people all playing on a PC, where they'll devote themself to a specific digital store and act like that store is the actual platform instead of just a random 3rd party app you're forced to have open while you game.
A "zoomer" who is old enough to have played the Gold Box AD&D video games on his old man's computer, apparently.

There are good reasons to only like steam now, from the fact that when you buy a game companies (Ubisoft, EA) make you install a second digital store, to the fact that companies (EGS) won't let you install the games you bought on your opertating system unless it's windows. It's not console war BS, it is companies trying to frick you over constantly. It is not simply choosing between one and the other. You don't buy a game on PS5 and then the developers force you to play it on Xbox.
Old enough to have been playing PC games for almost 20 years before steam came along. The anon you replied to is absolutely correct.

So you exclusively use the ubisoft and ea stores/launchers for your games you purchased at full retail price instead of on steam sale? Yeah, the dynamic is nothing like on consoles as I have said.

nta, but it's all on a PC anon. it's just a 3rd party application that you have to have open while you game. with the exception of GoG I guess since that one lets you install without an app if you want, but a lot require DRM and aren't necessarily okay with that store.

Yeah, no shit. If you buy a game on PS5 developers don't make you install it on Xbox Series X, If you buy a Ubisoft game on Steam, they make you install it on their shitty store. It is more than petty "console wars" shit, it shouldn't even exist.

Nothing like consoles and console wars where at least each hardware developer attempted to compete.

Monopolies are bad, anon.
There isn't a good reason for Steam to force you to have their app open in order to play their games, other than forcing you to feel obligated to devote yourself to their store.
So yeah, it's largely PC "console warring bullshit" where it didn't originally exist.

In game private chat, both text and voice, notifications for both games you play and groups you're in and the online status of friends you have to play games with, input handling so whenever a developer is too lazy to put in proper controller support you aren't stuck with an xbox controller being able to tab into a web browser in game to look up shit or play music, steam tunneling you so you aren't exposing your ip to mentally moronic spergs who doxx some random Valve server because you aren't playing the Meta in some casual game.

Optional? Sure.
That's not how it's implemented, though. They want you in their walled garden.

And there's a good reason for the other stores to? Other companies list their games on steam, limit physical releases, and then force you to install a second "store" to install and play their games.
The biggest game companies should have come together to create an open source marketplace, it would have been for the best but if they didn't do it back then they sure as hell won't do it now. Nothing "console wars" about it, they are greedy scum and none of them even attempted to make any software as well as gaben did.
Why do you keep deflecting to "other stores"? There isn't a good reason for anyone to do it. Steam did it first, others followed suit.
Only one who didn't follow suit was GoG.

Sony and Nintendo. They're both the dominant player in their respective markets. Whether you wanna say Sony won by becoming the defacto "Power" console that people buy to play FIFA and CoD and GTA, or if Nintendo won by forging out a massive audience of their own is up to you.
It was nice for steam-drones to come in like clockwork and prove the point of "a number of PC gamers nowadays jumping into console warring crap".

nintendo conceded the console wars 15 years ago, they've been playing solitaire ever since the wii
I mean, that's ultimately how you win it apparently. Don't play in the console war at all. Worked wonders for Nintendo.
I'm actually very curious what Microsoft and Sony will do, since we're actually hitting a point where the amount of money and time it takes to get the sort of graphics that is significantly better than prior generation is becoming too much to justify. There going to need more to draw people in for any future console generations besides simply more powerful hardware.
I mean, both Sony and Nintendo have found their niche. Sony is more consistent in terms of sales every generation, while Nintendo is either selling gangbusters or flopping hard. That said, I do hope more AA games start being made, like in PS1/PS2 era.
It'd be really hard to actually move hardware like that in the US and there's very little real interest in actually making compelling games from China.
