By the time of FFXVI people were already not expecting much, so there wasn't much "damage" done, because at worst it just reaffirmed sentiments former fans had developed with FFXV.
What's more interesting to look at is the FFVIIR trilogy. For one, it has a substantial amount of people who are holding back until the whole trilogy is released, but at the same time many of those who played Remake disliked it mostly because they had been worried that the storyline of Rebirth would completely derail from the OG at that point, but seeing familiar scenes from the OG in trailers has reassured them that the trilogy would not go into the completely divergent direction that they feared it would. Things like a much smoother dev cycle than Remake, supposedly more minigames that the OG, and much of the side-content no longer being timed might ensure that Rebirth actually ends up a bigger hit than Remake, especially if the PC version (Steam) releases much sooner this time around, judging from the exclusivity period being just 3 months instead of a year, and Epic having run out of PC exclusivity deal money.

It had a story that didn't need to be told. The combat was mediocre. Soundtrack was one of the worst in the series. The cast diversity and eikon fights were excellent. Basically, it was an expensive visual novel that GTA players wouldn't even consider watching the trailer of.

I'm going to buy it when they port it to PC. Having said that, I am completely against FF going from a regular ATB RPG to whatever the hell Kingdom Hearts/Devil may Cry nonsense it has been the couple of entries. We need to return to the basics. A good world, nice developed characters who grow together instead of being just a spectacle about the MC.
At least XVI doesn't force you to watch fricking anime to inderstand half of what's going on, I guess.
