You don't have to argue with literally every post on Ganker jesus fricking christ > In Japan, it appeared at the top of the Famitsu sales charts in December 1988[50] and January 1989,[50] and became the second best-selling game of 1988 after Dragon Quest III.[51] By mid-1989, Super Mario Bros. 3 had become the second best-selling game in Japan (non-bundled) up until then, after Dragon Quest III.[52] Super Mario Bros. 3 went on to become the overall best-selling game of 1989 in Japan, just above Tetris in second place.[53]

this. I just heard this in some Miyamoto interview. I don't know maybe he was lying but SMB3 still was the best selling game there at the time (I don't even consider Dragon Quest to be part of the competition because outselling it in Japan is practically impossible even for Mario)

You said it was in a 1/3rd of Japanese households which you completely made up, now it's just "oh well it was a lot and it was the best selling game if you ignore the actual best selling game"

Shiggy promoting himself? Totally believe everything he says, the hulk hogan of game devs
are we supposed to be surprised that mario was popular? this is about the supposed fact that 1/3 of japanese homes had a copy of mario brothers 3. thats a very specific bit of trivia to bring up.
>marketing budget for Super Mario Bros. 3 was $25 million >dev budget was $0.8
97% of the cost of SMB3 was advertisement. Money always wins, you WILL consider it a masterpiece because THE MAN already decided that it is
Someone found the secret. It had nothing to do with the game being quality, because it wasn't. But don't say that too loud or certain people will get very upset.
Nah, I like platform games with actual challenge to them. This game is designed for children still in nursery school. >but but the SUN!!!
He sweeps down very gradually in a perfectly predictable arch pattern, and you jump over him. There's nothing else to dodge in the stage. >but but the TORNADO!!!

Since you're so open-minded about playing children's games with no challenge whatsoever, I have an awesome game that you should try. Yes, it may look like it's meant for toddlers, and that's because it is, but don't let that put you off, it's very stimulating!

Why do you keep posting this but only on nintendo threads? Why not on threads of platformers on Sony systems, for example?

Good luck. You gotta spam a lot more and then some

Tendies are the ones that need to hear it. Sonybros know how to find lesser known titles and can well appreciate games with actual difficulty. Really it's only you guys who shill the same 5 games constantly and become violently angry when confronted with the fact that the only reason you care about them is solely because of Nintendo's behemoth marketing budget and nothing to do with the quality of the game itself.
Have you played Kid Chameleon? You wouldn't be able to clear Bloody Swamp.

You have never beaten this game and likely never will. There's a difficulty spike for the final world that you don't even know about.
You played it as a child and apparently got raped by the sun a few times before you figured out its simple pattern. Everyone can beat that world after a little practice anon, that isn't one of the challenging ones, though it's not overly easy. Why are you pretending it's too easy for you, does it make you feel skilled and like you "beat" everyone here? If you want to demonstrate your skill I suggest you try a competition, speedrunning maybe.

A lot of homosexuals think they're badass for not being bad at video games. This sort of attitude seemingly only continues on this one website, anywhere else they'd get called a loser before they could finish the sentence
Don't get too angry anon.
I just like video games, never owned a legit Nintendo console, I played SMB3 back in the early 90s on a Famiclone.
Not everyone is a console Gankerarrior like you are.
Because it was a good game which had good hype and good marketing, as a sequel to two previous good games with good hype and good marketing. It's that simple.
Good marketing always helps, but you also need a product which has something to offer. Excellent marketing can really help mediocre and even weak works, but only by so much, the effect of word of mouth can really count for a lot, either for or against your product.
Anyone who says that something which continuously made shitloads of money for years and years was all propped up entirely by marketing, with no qualities of its own, is nothing but a salty contrarian or/and a brand prostitute. There's lots of mediocre and tired garbage propped up by marketing, but mediocre doesn't mean incompetent or without any value at all, in fact it implies a baseline of competence which a work doesn't dip below too much, if at all, even if it doesn't do anything particularly novel or exciting that makes it stand out as excellent.
Nah, I like platform games with actual challenge to them. This game is designed for children still in nursery school. >but but the SUN!!!

A game being easy doesn't automatically make it bad, anon. If you wanted more challenging titles on the NES, you had stuff like Ninja Gaiden and Battletoads.
I'm old enough to remember when this game launched. You have no idea the amount of hype there was around this game. Everyone was excited for it. Of course it sold like hotcakes. There was nothing comparable to Mario's popularity at the time.
There was a lot less competition in this era because most video games were low effort cashgrabs and they were figuring out a lot of stuff still, is my understanding. It was also a more accessible game than even a lot of the good stuff i think
nta jfc, you just can't help tripping over yourself in inaccuracies. This board has many people who were around at the time or close to the time, we don't need or want opinions from zoomers about what their "understanding" is from what they've read or watched from e-celebs on youtube about it. You getting insulted talking about how "it doesn't contradict what I said" as if what you said was in any way reliable or valid, get a reality check. The reason noone is calling you out when you say bullshit like that is because you're a random Ganker person and can say anything. No, games licenced by Nintendo weren't a "cash grab" at all, that was the whole point of the NES, after the big videogame crash just before it. NES titles were generally very professional and not just a "cash grab" any more than most Xbox 360 titles.
But the whopper in your post is how you say Space Invaders is an example of a game that sold better? That is not true at all. That anon you are talking to said it made more money, not that it sold more. How could it have sold more when it's an arcade game?
I've been playing Nintendo for 30 years and I've never managed to beat this game what a great company that makes challenging games you can play for a life time
I want a japanese copy, besides Mario had already established itself as a great series of games
The first one and even the arcade one are great games, even Donkey Kong
Sega fans like games like Sonic, Shinobi, Virtua Fighter or Shining Force. Not Mike Cerny bullshit.
This is probably just australia-kun falseflagging as a sega fan, if I had to guess, or some other equally mentally ill tard.
Mario Madness
Wrong game, anon.
by that point everyone already had a Nintendo, and there was a whole movie called The Wizard that came out to generate SMB3 hype
>HOW?
I forgot all about this. Yeah, it probably helped that it had its own movie lol
There was a Nintendo movie about a vidya autist with a Super Mario 3 ad at the end.
The Wizard was riffing on (or ripping off) Pinball Wizard from The Who.
It was more like Rainman for kids. Similar to how The Karate Kid was Rocky for kids.
Rocky didn't cheat to win tho
Rocky didn't win.
Neither did Daniel. He cheated.
Shit's crazy, apparently 1/3 of Japan also had a copy of Mario 3 in their houses
why did you make up this completely random fact. mario 3 didnt even sell that well there.

Mario was gigantic at the time. Nintendo was a legitimate cultural phenomenon.

Boomers are still talking about the Beatles everyday and they're almost 70
I'm 39 actually, but thank you for saying I'm not old. 🙂
Because it was more fun than the other 2 at the time
All 3 of those are worth playing but this one was probably the best

What a way to kill the thread

Based on everything I've heard about vidya Accessibility equals big money. Non accessible stuff can only hope to dominate a specific niche
patently false, space invaders more money than every single nes game combined
That is one example of another game that sold better, but doesn't contradict what I said

Videogame ads were something else back then.
The "Who are you?" Japanese ad campaign was from the early 00s. This is the SMB3 commercial I remember.
%3D
Imagine honestly believing that this janky ass trash is better than SMB3:
%3D
This game's levels are like those shareware CDs full of random Doom WADs from the internet. No cohesion at all and it just keeps going.
I want a japanese copy, besides Mario had already established itself as a great series of games
