Somebody help a zoomer trying to play Duck Hunt out. playing on a crt tv I HAVE used before for the game. I've taken apart my nes (front loader), cleaned all over with ipa, cleaned my games, cleaned the contact points of the controller ports, controller connectors, 72 pin connector (replacement one I bought), etc. Duck Hunt REFUSES to work. Every other game seems to work besides Tetris. When I shoot on the title screen, the screen flashes black instead of white. During gameplay, same deal. No white boxes. I disabled my lockout chip a while ago by prying off a specific pin but seeing as I read a tutorial and made fully sure it was the right pin, I doubt it was that. I'm at the end of my rope lol, I don't wanna use some shitty clone nes console that has shit video/sound quality. I'd REALLY appreciate some help!

Lol thank you so much for joking but actually being funny. I tried asking on Ganker and was recommended here! I live in the US, using an NTSC console and tv. I'm not sure exactly how to answer the second question. I have a Toshiba crt made in 2005, the model number being MD13Q41. I've had this same console, cartridge, zapper, everything work before on this tv so it's odd. I hope the info helps some. I've used an RF adapter, and composite cables so it's not either.

i recently tried my front loader after not having used it in 10 years (had a replacement 72 pin put in it long ago) and the thing barely works anymore. i don't recall it being that bad before. cleaned all contacts internally and didn't help either, and i doubt it's any electrical components. caps appear good but could be shit, who knows. will probably swap it to an opentendo in the coming years

Thank goodness I still have my old one then. I can go ahead and replace the connector and start testing things out.

look at videos of how to bend the pins back on them, and give it a good cleaning. when you bend the pins notice how the originals have good thick metal contacts compared to the shitty paper thin metal on the new ones

I was gonna say just buy a new one because they are dirt cheap but then I realized it isn’t 2009 anymore.

I think I bent them a bit too far :/ if I push the cart down the game won't work but if I just slide it in it seems to work fine. Though I'm having the same issue. I shoot a bunch and the screen will MAYBE flash white ONCE. Even when I don't point it at the tv when it flashes white, the game begins anyway. I'm gonna go ahead and see if the boiling technique helps me out.

It pisses me the frick off so damn bad. Why do I have to pay hundreds of dollars because I just so happen to be in my early 20s right now? Jesus did everyone destroy their copies of Mario games? They make MILLIONS of copies. It's fricking ridiculous man. This is why I mostly just use highly accurate emulators. Playing on real hardware and on a crt has such a charm though, I don't think I can take one over the other

                Anonymous

I’m 31. When I was in middle and high school, people were giving their NES’s away, literally. Especially around the time of PS2. When AVGN hit it big is when prices started to creep up, but maybe like 40 bucks at most, it was individual games that steadily rose in price. You could walk in goodwill and find nes games and consoles for practically NOTHING.
200 dollars for a brick that sold tens of millions is unbelievable. That is greedy people taking advantage of younger generations fascination with retro. I guess you can’t blame them, but don’t fall for it.

This is why emulation is so important, eventually everything will hit these absurd highs.

It’s more important you have a low-hours CRT than console hardware because once the tubes go out on them they will officially be lost technology, unlike consoles which can at least be emulated, FPGA or otherwise.

                Anonymous

Thankfully I do emulate much more. I have a nice little lcd tv as well I can tolerate using. When my crt goes out I definitely plan on taking it to someone to repair it if possible. I feel extremely thankful to even have emulation, not to mention the decompilations of games like sm64.

                1. Most flat panels have a game mode that disables additional processing and removes input lag
                2. CRT only needed for fast action games, not necessary for slow stuff like RPGs
                3. Tubes can be rebuilt, they used to do that in the 50s-60s. We will have to re-learn that ancient art perhaps
                4. Putting brightness/contrast at 50% doubles a CRT's lifespan

                Anonymous

Input lag is not the reason I or most people use CRT's, or at least not the primary reason. It's just the most authentic experience and look for the games. At the least, I have a 25k hour Panasonic CT-27L8G thats still kicking despite being a little dim and having crushed blacks at default brightness, but there are dozens more available in my area, enough that I'll be set for life.

"Default" brightness on most CRTs means the moronic-ass factory setting that jacks it to 90% because it looked better in store displays so the tubes didn't last too long.

                Anonymous

By default I meant the actual center point on the brightness "scale", the real default or "normal" toggle on it sets brightness high as hell like a store display though, yeah.

Flat panels, even high refresh rate PC monitors, don’t have the perfect motion clarity CRTs have. That’s why with even the most impressive shaders imaginable, it still doesn’t quite look the same. I’m not a CRT supremacist (yes I am). I love shaders and I’m happy they exist but a real CRT is something you can’t truly recreate 100 percent on a flat panel.

Tubes can be rebuilt but it’s an economy of scale. The investment to have factories producing tubes would be absolutely massive for a such a niche audience. Not impossible though you’re right. I read somewhere they are still produced for specialty applications, like on older military craft, but who knows how true that is.

                >don’t have the perfect motion clarity CRTs have
if you spend enough then they're close enough, and that'll hopefully trickle down into cheaper options in the next 10 years since i don't want to pay that much for a modern tv. it still isn't the same though

no, dumbass. I mean back in the 50s there was literally a cottage CRT rebuilding business where they rebuilt tubes by sawing off the electron guns and replacing them with fresh ones, then re-sealing the tube in an oven. sometimes they'd also replace burned phosphor, although you can only do that on monochrome tubes not color ones. prior to solid state TVs were much more expensive and not very reliable so repairs/rebuilds were commonly done.

tell me, what exactly is being "fricked up" here?
absolutely no damage is done to the 72 pin, it's nickel plated. disabling the lockout chip doesn't have to be destructive and even when it is done that way, it's easily replaced by any lockout chip from some garbage low cost broken game cart. even with it the owner chooses to disable it for whatever reason, there's no adverse effects. why do you think they omitted it from the top loader? besides cost savings of course. and all in all, it's just a toaster nes... who cares?

You'll need at least a pin adapter but it comes without a lockout chip. Video signal is the same so should be fine for your TV. You'll need to do some kind of solution with a step down converter for the power. (Do your own research; I have no idea.)

you would get a Famicom Everdrive and play the ROMs from that instead. and don't use the original Japanese power brick, it's designed for 100V and will overheat in a 120V US wall outlet. a Mega Drive PSU will do for powering it. A NES power brick will produce magic smoke so absolutely do not use that in a Famicom. Ever.

it's still doable in a lot of cases, just try out new games on emulators and make deliberate occasional purchases. but it still sucks. at least i've been using it as an excuse to play a lot of games i bought and should have played but never did. and plenty of good games are out there that are still a good price. it still truly is nothing like how it was before though
