Far Cry 6 and its DLCs tried to fix the "timeline" by retconning all the past games.
It's set in 2021, so they had to change things.
Far Cry 3: Vaas is alive. Jason fricking Citra is canon, Vaas killed both afterwards. He's an old smuggler in the Caribbeans.
Far Cry 4: Not killing Pagan on the helicopter is the canon ending. He goes in exile but not before nuking Montana with his top serkit OC donut steel stash of nuclear warheads (that he had because reasons). Why? Because he was butthurt at the CIA.
Far Cry 5: The very first hidden ending is, surprisingly, the canon ending.
Joseph goes to prison and gets 10 years, Montana gets nuked and the USA government blames the cult.
John, Jacob and Faith leave Montana, they escape the cult getting fricked in the ass by the National Guard and get into seeds business. Yes, the Seed family sells agricultural seeds for farming. New Dawn is not canon and it never happened.
There is one additional retcon that is complete fandom speculation, so I will not bother with that.
I had no idea Montana was such a melting pot of diversity until I played this game. And by melting pot of diversity I only mean 40% black population with the occasional Asian man, and literally nothing else.
Before playing it myself, I heard someone say that the outposts in the Faith region can play a song that sounds like "atmospheric combat gospel", and I completely agree.
