The vast majority of the play time was fighting the tank controls and camera, followed by a game over when you ran out of lives. Especially in the ice levels.
If they remaster it and change those things, it becomes a two hour game.

Sonic 3 is easily the worst out of the mainline Genesis games if you don't count stuff like Spinball or 3D Blast. I say this as a formerly huge Sonic fan that read the Archie comics and spent hours every day playing 2 and Sonic & Knuckles. I quit liking Sonic after Sega of Japan "modernized" Sonic and did away with or butchered all the previous lore that Sega of America, SonicSatAM, and Archie comics had founded, around the time Sonic Adventure came out for Dreamcast.. Poor level design and a disappointing end boss ruin the game for me.

Sonic 2 is a good game, it just isn't a good Sonic game.
2 and CD are best. 1 isn't quite there yet and 3 jumps the shark

Lost World is the definition of "Do judge a book by its cover" because the actual game is dogshit despite looking like it should be a good game. It has the Mario effect without the good gameplay.

3D Blast is one of the best games in the Genesis and it's superior to the Saturn version.
Guns are actually a good fit for the gameplay of sonic games, guns are fast and cool, sonic is fast and cool.
Sonic CD was shit and fundamentally went against the main purpose of a Sonic game by turning it into a generic level exploration platformer rather than a test of speedy platforming and efficiently reaching the end as fast as possible.
I unironically enjoy Black Knight more than Colors.

Sonic 3 is the best Genesis Sonic game. It's the ultimate culmination of everything that made Sonic good, packed into a 2 parts game that was enormous and great to play, from start to finish. It feels like what we'd call "triple A" quality by 90s standards.
The music, the levels, the controls, the sound effects, it's just 100% classic Sonic goodness. Sonic 1 and 2 feel like prototypes of S3&K.
