No, they're right, sorry. Advance 2's level design isn't as bad as Rush's, but it's still not good, either. Now, that said, I DO agree that the build-up to the boost mechanic (rather than a boost button) and the trick system are a nice evolution of Classic style gameplay, but they have to have good level design to compliment them or it all just falls apart into a brainless holdright2win affair, at best. Or in Rush's case, holdX2win.
This is correct. Tricks off of springs/launchers always felt massively satisfying and good level design (which 2 is lacking in) could make that even better.
3 still has my favorite gimmick (teams and team moves), how I wish that ever got expanded on.
Also, for the sake of noting it, this romhack (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/8001/) was pretty fun. Turns out just playing through the levels and grabbing a few extra special rings feels immensely satisfying.
Sonic Advance 2 with team moves would be an alright soft fix.

It is worth remembering the games were designed for two screens and had a very vertical level design because of it, which would not translate well on our modern 16:9 screens and such. This is a "leaked" alleged high production full 3D remake of a side game from the DS that is currently unannounced, and OP seems to be the first and only one so far to talk about it. These two "leaks" are in completely different ballparks, and as a result they're not really comparable.
