Sonic 3 was definitely the better half of the two. S&K varies in quality wildly every other act until Death Egg, where the last few segments are excellent
NTA but nah. Pretty much all of S&K's levels fall on the "long" side (well you know for a Sonic game at the time). Most of which are also pretty boring and uninspired. Musics a steep downgrade between games as well.
Mmmh I dunno with the music. Yeah Sonic 3 is kino as frick thanks to MJ’s people but S&K has some good bangers too, Flying Battery and Lava Reef mostly. But then again it doesn’t make up for the forgettable Sandopolis music or kinda bland Mushroom Hill so I getcha

The only reason Origins' music sucked was because they had Jun himself do the conversion into genesis sound instead of having him compose the tunes and then have someone else put it in the game. The properly arranged versions of the song are better than the MJ one.

The JP OST is pure concentrated 90s energy, I love it. I'm a little sad that future games didn't try to emulate the OST's style and instead vouched for buttrock, but c'est la vie.
Gonna have to come out and say US Stardust Speedway objectively sounds the best and is suited for a level where you go fast hence the “Speedway” Motif, the JPN version just sounds like a Dance Battle Music which doesn’t fit the Metal Sonic Race at all, never understood why JPN Stardust Speedway is so overhyped.
You know, I do think the US soundtrack builds stronger atmosphere in some stages, and the Metal Sonic Race is definitely one of them. But I'm such a bawd for the JP OST it feels wrong to play the game without it.

>The first hurdle the team had to overcome, according to Iizuka, was a commitment that Sega had made to have a game out to coincide with a McDonald's promotion. In addition to that, Sega was quickly discovering the technology to support its large next game was not in place yet. >"The cartridge sizes were limited in space, so we were finding out that not only did we have these obligations to get the content out at a certain time, but we also couldn't get this massive game that we wanted to make onto the space that the cart would allow," Iizuka says. >Sonic Team reluctantly cut the game in half to satisfy these requirements, but the developers didn't want the resulting two games to feel like two distinct experiences. The team brainstormed ways to make two separate cartridges feel like one seamless experience. >They went to the hardware division and explained the situation. because Heroes has visual appeal and some interesting/engaging level design. Shadow has neither. Heroes also focuses on getting to goal ring instead of doing tedious missions. I also enjoy the switching between characters gameplay, which Shadow lacks
true. Still, even when you're going from point A to B, the stages in Shadow aren't that interestingly designed compared to Adventure saga/Heroes stages. This is because they chose to make 23 stages, so it's quantity over quality (SA1 and SA2 have 10 speed stages each, and Heroes has 14 stages)
there are only 10 Chaotix missions (and some of them ain't hard) Shadow has over 30 missions and some of them are a bigger pain in the ass than any Chaotix mission (The Doom hero and dark, Mad Matrix dark, Lost Impact Hero, Black Comet dark)

Ok Black person. Also, Ice Cap is literally the same fricking thing.
It's a fricking carnival, I EXPECT it to sound like one. The beta shit literally don't even sound like it matches what's on screen. Sounds more like a literal video game, as in, the background is a simulation while Sonic runs in front of it like a green screen.
The proto song sounds like a Sonic level taking place in a carnival, it's inspired and creative. The MJ tune is generic and brainless and could be in any video game, it wouldn't be out of place in a McDonald's promotional game

Nice subjective projection. Anything can sound like "x music", but only a good song matches the level its used in. And nothing about the beta design would work in a carnival. Hell, it wouldn't even work in the toy level in Advance 2.

Sonic has sucked shit in various ways since day fricking 1. I was 10 when Sonic 1 came out and my cousin had it along with a Genesis and when I got to try playing I was like "wtf is shit offscreen enemies spewing bullets at you, frick you spikes/pits, getting crushed literally by nothing!?!!!". We still played it a lot however and of course I eventually got my own Genesis along with Sonic 2 and that was was so boring and overly long I be like "end! just end!!!!!!!!!!! aaaahHH!H ARGH WTF IS THI SMYSTIC FART ZONE?????". I played Sonic CD at my cool uncles (r.i.p.) place and my god whoever devved that game legitimately either neglected to design levels or flatout didn't know how to. We got the Sega Channel which is how I experienced Sonic 3 and later Knuckles. 3 was p. good but with Knuckles I noped out and loaded up Shining Force and Time Killers (even back then I knew that game was fricking trash but its badness amused me so) for the trillionth time. Don't even get my started on the GameGear Sonics. Sonic Drifts my ass.
Sonic Team went full moron after Sega merged with Sammy in 2004. Shadow is a dull game. Between the bleak graphics/textures, uninteresting level design, piss easy shooting mechanics, draining missions, nerfed spin dash, forgiving ring system, and lack of engaging cinematography/camera angles/set pieces, it's the easily the first bad 3D game. Heroes was very rough around the edges, but i'd still recommend it. Shadow? Not a chance
