they got tons of sales and the platform itself is far ahead than any of the competition.

Steam wouldn't have a monopoly if all the other shitty publishers put more than 0.001% of the effort into their own launchers. EA app is objectively shittier than Origin was, and that was already pretty garbage. If those are the best they can be bothered with Steam deserves is market superdominance.

well, as long as you create an exception to the firewall, you will never have problems like that, in fact the ideal would be to do that with games that have been recently cracked, or games that don't have some kind of drm, like playstation ports that send telemetry even if you unselect that option
a tip for most people here, use the oneclickfirewall program, which saves you the trouble of creating firewall rules, and prevents any .exe from connecting to the internet

        No.
When companies are competing for the market, it means they are making games to lure costumers into their own ecosystem, which should increase repertoire diversity among consoles.
Considering that Xbox had no exclusives and that Sony is now just remastering The Last Of Us again and again, this has become pointless.

developing chip is actual easier than you think. But there are a lot of existing infrastructure like compiler/OS can be leveraged if they just use x86. So big companies normally just use customized chip from AMD/intel/NVDA with undisclosed ISA/hardware accelerators while trim down a lot useless circuit for their tasks. This is why they can get chip cheaper than normal GPU on the market.

Waaay too expensive. And there's a good chance the product they come up with after five years of R&D is terrible compared to what Intel, AMD, Nvidia or Qualcomm can make.

nintendo's dementia ridden old guard probably doesn't even understand that they're being fricked over honestly

Well, the leak from 2022 suggests they are going to use an Nvidia chip again. But:
                1) This leak came from Nvidia, not Nintendo. For all we know they asked multiple companies to design a chip for their future console.
                2) That leak is pretty old by now, and the Switch 2 is supposedly getting postponed more and more. This may be because Switch 1 keeps selling... but also because they are changing SoC manufacturer.

It's unlikely they'll switch (heh) to another company to be honest, someone would've leaked it by now. But as I said, I wouldn't be THAT surprised if Switch 2 ends up using AMD hardware.

        >access to more games
absolutely not. Exclusives have always been the most gen-defining games because console manufacturers wanted to market their consoles with them. Why would Sony make a racing game when they're getting Forza anyway? Why wouldnt MS put microtransactions on all their games when it wont affect console sales either way?

Exclusives have always been the most gen-defining games because fanboys slurp them up simply because they bought into that ecosystem. They're elevated and used as ammo for the hardware instead of standing on their own merits.
An open platform where games can compete equally is better for everyone except the suits trying to push locked down gimped hardware to take the games and their customers hostage.

            >An open platform where games can compete equally is better for everyone except the suits
they're pushing this for a reason. Why spend a lot of money making and marketing a good game when they can have someone else make a shitty GaaS of which they'll get 30%? On top of that there's zero risk. As you said, fanboys will keep buying their favorite brand either way

          Big mistake
          Nobody want yet another launcher.
Its fine if they want to sell their games directly cutting off fatman and his cut. But FFS stop trying to Steam 2.0 and make new launchers. Nobody fricking wants to install another launcher, Its negative value for consumer.

          How it should be:
          1. you download install file from the company's website.
          2. click install. It installs the game. You get game icon.
          3. You click game icon and launches game. Right fricking now! no launchers, no "register account" no other bullshit, Click icon get game.
(If you really need account for game register it on launch automatically, make random ID and random password, autofill them and launch game. Let player change them later from options if they want. But FFS not extra steps after clicking game icon. It should load straight into the game.

you think this is why consoles are dying? Every game publisher thought they could just open up their own streaming service for games?

      My GOG account says otherwise.

      [...]
If by fine mean they are losing money yeah.

GOG is pretty limited in what it offers. You're either buying shit that's been out for 10 years on Steam, or some tallentless indie shit they're trying to push while good indie publishers like Chillasart only publish on Steam. GOG is more like Internet Archieve of video game but you have to pay to play.

Nintendo was smart to recognize that seeking to produce the best graphics is a foolish move that ends in high costs, years and years of time, and very little returns to justify it.

Sony and Microsoft should have come to the same conclusion after the success of games like Minecraft, Overwatch, and Fortnite. BUT somehow they didn't.

It's getting so bad I only trust nintendo and capcom to actually make games that felt they were thoroughly play tested. Every western studio makes me feel I have to pay to be their guinea pig.

With backwards compatibility being a thing, chances are the hardware won't deviate too much. Still, i don't see emulation being a thing for atleast 2-3 years if even that. At the very least make sure to grab the first release of Switch 2 before any revisions and updates happen, as that always seems to be the first ones to be cracked open.

Imagine, if a piece of aluminum is all it took a second time.....

It stopped being a competition in 2009, when Steam was picking up and PC ports were getting better. Piracy was easier than ever, second rise of the indie games scene, mods, fangames and romhacks getting popular etc.
All of the subsequent generations of consoles never managed to keep up with the advantages offered by PC gaming. I mean, why would you play multiplats on limited chink laptops (PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Series X) just because they're branded with the Microsoft or Sony company names? The few exclusives they had played like shit (Halo a fricking shooter on console kek) or were moviegames, save for exceptions like Bloodborne. To make things worse, it made you feel like the exclusives were stuck on weak hardware for no practical reason other than corporate greed and anti-consumer deals to force you into buying a specific console. Imagine if RDR2 was stuck on Playstation and Xbox.

Nintendo at the very least made the right decision and focused on portability and fun games, instead of participating in the hardware/graphics race of home consoles knowing they could never compete against desktops in the first place. That's why the switch sells and has a relevant niche to fill. To make it better, their exclusives are easy to emulate and improve with mods thanks to hobbyists, so PC really is reaping all of the benefits.

Nintendo was smart to recognize that seeking to produce the best graphics is a foolish move that ends in high costs, years and years of time, and very little returns to justify it.

They are not implementing Denuvo because of emulation, they are doing it because Switch game piracy is rampant in China and Latin America, if you buy a Switch in the second hand market of China, it will most likely come modded to play backup games.

I wasnt thinking about gaas games. Im thinking about singleplayer games. They release a gaas game day abd date, and then make a statement about wanting to go all in even more on PC releases. Anon, Totoki was talking about increasing their Playstation profit margins by using the PC and mobile audience. Sony still has 6 gaas games in development. They will all be released at the same time. Besides, Totoki is only a interim CEO of Playstation. He is here until someone else is found.

            Anonymous

They already release games on PC and gaas games day and date. Its very obvious that that statement comes now, where they can see the effect of sales da and date.
They will increase those margins by releasing singleplayer games aswell day and date, where the majority of copies are sold. Totoki being interim actually shows you that this is the will of both investors and SIE.
Dev cost is too high, and from the investor call we know Sony wants to continue releasing their cinematic 3rd person AAA 100million + dollar budget games, but profit from PS users alone is not enough anymore. And while PC market continues to grow and grow, console share stagnates.

                >why would they give up on units sold through console
By coming to the realisation that 125 million Steam users were not going to buy a PS5 anyways. Its simply too much money to ignore. And most sales happen during the original release, alongside marketing. As we can now see thanks to Helldivers 2. Besides, Sony will not lose too much console users with this. The average PS user only buys a PS5 for FIFA and CoD, anyway, and will not move to PC gaming because of day and date releases on PC.

I would still buy consoles but...
Sony killed all their good game studios to release slop, promotes censorship and low quality games, also you have to pay for online.
Xbox is just a worse locked down PC, have to pay for online.
Nintendo quality hit rock bottom and they are still trying to make even worse stuff, also they included planned obsolescence they never fixed (Joycon drift, PI3USB, etc), also the console has shit hardware specs since they are using a 2014 SoC from Nvidia they got for cheap because they couldn't sell it so Emulation makes all games look perfect, also they charge for online.

What would it take from Nintendo to port Splatoon over to PC? Do they not realize how much money and costumers they are missing out on?

      Anonymous

How? It's basically the opposite. Consoles are literally just shitty locked down PCs at this point. They made sense when you could just throw in a disk and play a game, but now you have to install the game to the SSD and download updates and pay to play online with no way around it. Now they have muh performance mode so you can't even been assured it will run well and not look like shit. Consoles are now the same shit as a PC but locked down. Complete waste of money.

On PS5, the data is still on the disc.

You still have to install it to the SSD... which is slower than just downloading a game from Steam. Modern internet is faster than a blu-ray disk.

i was at first. i cant think of anything since crysis that attempted to push every bit of tech to its limit. gaming has seemingly settled down on graphics and stuff and even now its fricking ugly. splotchy acne looking shadows over rocks that look wet for some reason.
i remember when death stranding came out and one of the things was this motorcycle, so i asked to see what the motorcycle looked like as it ran over this giant map of rocks and it was no different than adding carts to skyrim and all the physics were fricked. there has been very little actual development in games on every scale for over a decade now. so yeah games like crysis used to give me hope even if they were a tech demo more than anything, at least it wasn't settling for what garbage we have now and they tried

UE5 having the realistic shit makes it so shit game devs can make "realistic" graphics without knowing a thing about shit. Its why they always force on TAA without realising it makes games look like shit. Its also why they run like shit as well.
So at the moment the pinnacle of pushing games forward is the software side at nvidia and the very few engineers working on path tracing at CDPR

                Anonymous

its not even realistic though. the awful shadows we're used to now look nothing like real shadows. hell you could just call them gaming shadows at this point because its so common. i hate it and find older games especially the ones with their own art design limited by only the hardware its on, to be way more visually appealing

                Anonymous

Thats what I mean with the ones pushing forward are a tiny minority. Path tracing actually looks fantastic but not everyone has $2000 gpus, so the easiest way to go is with the built in UE5 shadows that look like shit and are affected by TAA.
UE5 provides an easy way for shit devs to go "WOAHHH LOOK AT MY REALISTIC GRAPHICS AND THE 100,000 TREES RENDERED IN" which is why theres so much un-optimised shit, because they dont know about optimasation or how to make an art style beyond ultra 4kHDSSDRTX graphics baked in.

The writing has been on the wall about the eventual obsolescence of "high-end" consoles for a very long time but the amount of self-sabotage that led both companies to this point this fast has been bizarre to watch. Sony especially should have known better.

      Anonymous

I feel like consoles could have easily kept on going if only they didn't try to maintain this unsustainable AAA gaming ecosystem where every game costs as much (or sometimes even more than) big Hollywood blockbuster movies and, instead, opted for a more AA model where their output is more these mid-budget AA games like Lies of P, Evil West, Hi Fi Rush, Remnant 2 and so on.
Regardless of what you think about the quality of these AA games, you can't deny that they would make for the basis of a much more sustainable business model than having all your eggs in one AAA basket.

        Anonymous

I would have to agree with you. These AAAA spectacle games aren't even that good compared to the "smaller" games. Maybe because those smaller games are left to just make a decent game and not be the next big breakout 10 billion sales game. Not really into most Nintendo first party titles but I do appreciate all the smaller scale experimental things they do compared to XBOX and SONY that seem to feel a need to make massive breakout billion dollar franchises out of every game or consider it a complete failure not worth touching.

          Anonymous

I can agree. Nintendo does a great job of offering support to Indie Studios and actually hosts a Indie Showcase and Partner Showcase for AA and Indie titles respectively. I also like AA games a ton because I like medium companies that try new weird things. Also on Steam itself they do host tons of small and medium sized titles and try to promote them constantly on the front page for everyone to find what they like. Xbox and Sony pretend to care and are competing in a graphics and budget measuring contest that they forgot Steam and Nintendo exist. They are eating the marketshare without doing much else other than focusing on the games.

          Anonymous

And the sad part is, the AA games end up having better spectacles than the AAA/AAAA games.
It's not much different to how Godzilla Minus One ends up being 1 billion times better than just about every major blockbuster from 2023 despite only costing 15 million dollars to make compared to the 100/200 million dollar bloated atrocities churned out by Marvel, Pixar and the like.

      Anonymous

Blame Jim Ryan for that. He decided to kill AA and Indies that made games for fun and passion that were not expensive and go all in on blockbuster overly expensive movie titles that cost about 5-7 million sales to make back. Also reminder he killed off Japan Studios and the former employees are in TVT now.

they are a private company, so in theory the owner can ask for 1 trillion $, but Steam make between 7 and 10 billion revenue per year, so when Gaben meet God, the guy/girl who will take over Steam will be able to sell steam for 30-40 billions or more, because if you own Steam, you own PC gaming overall, Gog is too small and timmy store doesn't matter, so only Megacorp can pay (like Apple, Google, Microsoft etc), but i doubt it the guy/girl who will take over will sell a golden goose

10 years ago field experts thought AGI won't happen before 2040. and now we might be months or just few short years away. you're wrong about hands, next SD model surpasses dalle, hands are perfect as well as text inputs and it's completely spacial aware (go check the example with colored geometric shapes in the middle with cat and dog on the sides, dalle can't pull that off correctly). hentai will never be the same once this gets a full release.

we're a very, very long way off from anything close to that. its just never going to happen. ai generating sprites, code, all sorts of 3d stuff sure, but someone is always going to have to piece it together and that relies on at least some knowledge of the workings of things. ai is just a new tool in the box, not an entirely new thing. causing a vidya crash when things are already at their worst is just a plus

you're thinking small here. "dumb" gpt4 agents can already make simple websites and videogames, now imagine what you could pull off with 100 AGI agents who are experts in audio and video generation as well as 3d modeling and animation in UE5.

          Anonymous

agi isn't here yet. the fact that they call it 'agi' instead of artificial intelligence should be a warning. ai is not actually intelligent, its more like auto complete is

            Anonymous

It's expected this is where a lots of very heated debates will occur once someone makes AI that can pass all tests but still won't be cognitive or self aware. some will call it AGI, some won't but the key point here is it will be better than 99,999% humans in any given task.

I'm pretty sure its less about keeping it off PC and more about 'it may not be worth it to port this'.

      >Valkyria Chronicles 1
Port was a sleeper hit due to its reasonable price, all content included, and overall being a solid game that has an assortment of waifus and husbandos for every taste, WW1 anime edition, and neat mechanics for tactical combat. PC was by far the most successful platform since its original PS3 release.
      >Valkyria Chronicles 4
Released concurrently on PC along with consoles, in a good move by Sega. Sales were unfortunately meh on all platforms in the short term, but got better in the long term particularly on PC. The name had a lot to do with it, putting a 4 on it was foolish when it takes place during the same time as 1 and anyone except the hardcore fans will probably pass it over when they see 1 and then al the sudden 4. It should have been called something like "Valkyria Chronicles: on the Federation Front" and it would have sold better as mechanically it was better and everything else was parity to VC1.

Even with Azure Revolution being outside the same canon and meh compared to the others, I'd like to see it on PC. However what I'd want far more to revive Valkyria interest is...
      >VC2 and VC3 Extra Edition REMAKE
Literally every time Sega brings some formerly portable PSP/Vita only thing to PC , or remakes/remasters something it does well. VC2 and VC3 EE were limited by their mobile platform - expanded remakes would give a great chance to revive the series and provide huge milf Alicia breasts
