Sony Interactive Entertainment will not release any new major franchise titles before March 2025

Remember when, during PS2 days, you could get an entire trilogy of an IP in a single generation?

Now, when a game started development at the release of current gen, it won't come out until the next one.

there are so many games nowadays that people don't have time to play everything anyway. you're gonna be just losing sales if you release too many games in too tight intervals

I unironically blame the indie game flood. People complain about big AAA releases being the only thing there is, but the truth is the absurd amount of shovelware being shat out by any "aspiring gamedev" out there is so absurd that they basically ruined that entire part of the market. Big AAA titles is ironically the only niche where those companies feel secure, because no indie dev will be able to compete there. Meanwhile if they decide on making AA or smaller scale games, they will have to complete with hundreds of different titles.

Are you really arguing that big devs are fricking incapable of competing with 5 nerds in a basement? That they need to make shittiest, bandest games ever because the creative, fun market is too hard?

          Anonymous

Yes I am arguing that they indeed cannot compete. They are that bad.

            Anonymous

Damn anon, you are not wrong, but surely they could grab TEN nerds instead of 5 and put them in a basement themselves?

          Anonymous

the problem with AAA devs is that they HAVE to make the blandest "for everyone" garbage possible because those corpos are so bloated and costly to run with so many fingers in the pot that everything they release has to be a "revenue stream" and make hundreds of millions of dollars just to profit.

5 nerds in a basement can make whatever the frick they want and are passionate about, and if it's even halfway decent they'll sell at least a couple hundred thousand copies and be set for most of the rest of their lives, maybe make a sequel or dick around with a new project or whatever, it doesn't really matter because they have no israeli marketing or legal army grifting from them or shareholders to appease, etc.

            Anonymous

Yet Hi-fi Rush got made despite being an experimental title. Yet Death Stranding is getting a sequel that will probably sell a lot of copies even if people go "what the frick was that that was dumb" like last time.

i feel like the gta games are mostly a third worlder phenomenon. it would be a great time for them to make a game by and for white people for once to snatch up that audience who doesn't car that much about the brown people crime game, but you know they won't.

This is what specgays get for wanting unnecessary bells and whistles like ray tracing, 4k, and HDR
Plotgays are just as bad, I'm sure there's plenty of time wasted on writing, motion capture, face scanning, HOURS of fricking dialogue, and ugly-fying scanned faces
Oh, and they're gonna start being $80 for being partially complete upon launch, with only 75% of the major issues addressed per game's lifespan, and a $30 2 hour movie with 45 minutes of gameplay dlc
    Enjoy

    >you could get an entire trilogy of an IP in a single generation?
Well, back then games were made by two dozen people over a year or two, not by six hundred code/artistmonkeys for three+++ years.

Chasing after muh graphics has ballooned the games out to ridiculous proportions. Making a single game nowadays takes half generation, this leads to a studio releasing one, maaaaaybe two games per gen. because once they are done with the first, the second is made for upcoming hardware, intent as a (near)launch window title.

      Anonymous

...And in addition to that, because they are so expensive and time consuming to make - they are made extra, EXTRA safe to ensure a return on your investment. When you spend 100mil and tie down all your assets for half a decade, you sure as frick you want to see this shit turn a decent profit.

Im hearing the same excuses here people made when XBOX was struggling to release games, kek

        Anonymous

You call it excuses, but that's just the reality of things - games don't grow on trees.
Why do you think the A-AA market all but evaporated during the PS3 generation? With production costs inflating into tens of millions territory, not many studios could actually compete in the market, and they were always a single flop away from bankruptcy.
Within a few short years, everyone eventually stumbled and went out of business, only to be bought out for peanuts by the few major corpos who could take a loss of that magnitude - allowing them to grow into the cancerous multimedia titans they are today.

what are even considered the "major" franchises?

ass creed, call of duty, grand theft auto, tomb raider, far cry, uncharted, etc etc. sports releases like fifa and madden are also major franchises but they're literal copy-pastes with a genuine sub 100 IQ third world market demographic so they don't count.

nintendo is already on a modern 6+ year dev cycle with their mainline franchises. it took them 6 years to release botw 2, and super mario odyssey was 7 years ago.

joking aside, this shit game rollout is because they cancelled 6 GaaS games that were in development
