I'd go for Konami and Ubisoft to secure the IP. The kids today won't understand how much unused shit Konami has.

Square Enix are already pretty much PlayStation exclusive so i don't think acquisition is necessary.

Acquisition would save them exclusivity costs and let them take 100% of the profits from the games Square makes. It's not just about exclusivity.

Konami doesn't make games anymore, ubisoft is meh, square enix is the worst one and I doubt Capcom would accept being bought out

Ito is a hack and SH2 Demake will be shit. No idea why you showed him as an example. Without Kojima or Kojima's team rather we saw how Konami's MGS turned out to be with Survive lol.

                Anonymous

Survive sold more than mgs5 because it wasnt filled with kojima cringe. The only reason anyone outside of japan bought mgs was cause they were bait and switched by having a gruff american soldier man on the cover and then when they played the game it was a japanese soap opera and they never played the series again. Without kojima mgs will flourish.

One thing I can give him credit for is tying up almost all the loose ends he made over the years. There is nothing a MGS game can follow besides little time frame between Big Boss' disappearance after MSF incident and Outer Heaven. Which doesn't even warrant it's own game. Sony would do nothing but remakes of old games if they acquired them or rebooting the series altogether for western sensibilities.

For Sony's sake, they better buy Square Enix and Ubisoft. They're pretty much in the gutter compared to other big wigs and their IP selection are pretty diverse. Ubisoft is a bit tricky though considering the employee bloat.

SE is the worst case scenario for anime. Sony only needs an IP rights holder and manga publisher in order to achieve 100% monopoly of the anime industry and if they buy SE that would give them total control.

Konami has the best library of IPs in the history of gaming, but they’ve also neglected or outright destroyed them as brands for years now. You’d not only be buying Konami but also having to invest in rebuilding their entire games development infrastructure and rehabilitating the reputation of their IPs. And no, hiring some shitters like Bloober Team to remake Silent Hill 2 isn’t the way to go about that, but that’s exactly how Sony under their current leadership would go about things. So you’d need new Sony management too.

          >Konami has the best library of IPs in the history of gaming
What other than MGS, Silent Hlil, Contra, Castlevania and Bomberman? Not many heavy hitters here, no way you'd call these the best in the "history of gaming".

          Capcom would be 8.2B

I'm shocked Sony didn't buy them way back in the PS2 era. I could see them buying the IPs and having La Creatividad frick them up once and for all.

          Anonymous

Brute force buying IPs is more of a Microsoft/EA (both their gaming divisions have some connective history too) kind of thing. Japan didn't really have a concept of that, they more of just had strong arm Yakuza deals for exclusive runs or releases. Even Nintendo let Rare get through their hands, they just have a very different mindset about business and loyalty than the west. It's why Sony is caught with its ass down when Microsoft is doing a repeat of what they did in the first Xbox gen. Everyone in the west realizes media IP monopoly and consolidation is going to be the future winner 20 - 30 years from now and I guess you can vaguely argue Disney lit the match for the modern version of that war.

I can't see Capcom selling, they're already insanely profitable. Konami is possible and it might help push them to make more games, or even just have Sony acquire the IPs and outsource much of it. Konami may sell just their video game division and keep their gambling/gaming division separate.

Squeenix feels feasible. I think FFXVI underperformed but they keep taking exclusivity deals anyway, so it seems like they're trying to shore up development budget via those deals. Feels like they might need some financial help.

No idea where Ubisoft is financially nowadays.

Capcom is too profitable and aren't total frick ups. They don't sell.

Konami is also profitable thanks to gambling. They don't sell.

Square-Enix could be likely, but they don't have much left outside of Final Fantasy and Dragon's Quest, but they seem to have a better relationship with Nintendo and not Sony

UbiSoft is dire, but I imagine Microsoft scoops them and has already circled them a few times.

The biggest on all of these is that they have nothing new to offer and all the old stuff is already everywhere.

Take Two market cap is 25B.
Sony cannot afford them ever. They have only 8bn in accusation money.
Take Two would not sell anyways because GTA VI is going to make them so much more money.

Sony has a confirmed 13 Billion, moron. That's in cash.

Acquiring Take Two is a fever dream for Sony dumbass. You need Market cap + extra for a good deal. So probably looking at 35b or more.

          >They COULD aquire Take Two but it would take almost all available resources to make it happen.
If I was Sony I would've gone for it. GTAVI console exclusivity would be far far far better than Acti-Blizzard or even Bethesda themselves. GTAV's sales are more than double of Overwatch-Diablo series AND TES series combained(not more than Call of Duty series though). Excluding shark cards.

Won’t happen, shareholders would rip Take Two a new one.
Mostly because GTA VI is multiplatform and the most anticipated game out there. The sales projections for the game are a lot and I don’t see Take Two selling exclusivity for it at all no matter how much money someone throws at them. Not Sony nor Microsoft.

Did MS pull Minecraft or any other game?
They can and will make CoD on Playstation the inferior version (delayed content, higher price tag), but they will be cautious or it was the last acquisition in that industry for MS.

If Sony were smart they would make actual games instead of throwing money at a fan or shove it all down Naughty Dogs ass.
CoD might be dead in 10 years.
While it still performs fine there have been a lot of games in recent years that make CoD look irrelevant in comparison.

That's a temporarily solution. The games will eventually end up on Microsoft's platforms if they don't permanently buy devs and publishers to keep them off. They need long term answers if they want to compete with the massive backlog of games Microsoft is going to be able to offer on Game Pass. Sony has nothing, all their big hits are 3rd party that they do not own. It's not like Nintendo where they could release their entire backlog of first party games on NSO all at once if you own a Switch 2 and people would flip out and jerk off for 10 years straight and go and buy the console immediately.

They were probably off buying Mihoyo right before Genshin got big instead but here we are. Every one of those GAAS games are going to be a pozzed clone of some other popular GAAS title and no gamer is going to end up playing them like with Destruction All Stars. Sony needs to go back to their roots fast, appeal to the degenerates, the otakus, and the coomers like Nintendo did after the Wii U. Give the gamers some fricking games instead of giving the casuals movies. If they put some sex appeal into Returnal it would have been a cult classic instead of largely forgotten, fricking morons running these companies don't even get their base.

Except Microsoft apparently does because they keep bringing over weeb game after weeb game while Sony sits around doing nothing despite owning 90% of the Western anime industry and letting Microsoft have Crunchyroll(which Sony owns) as part of their subscription package while Sony doesn't even include that in their own. God I hope Jim Ryan gets fired.

Wrong actually. You're forgetting that it didn't even come to PC until like 4 years after console versions, and by that point it had sold over 4 million of it's 6 million total sales. And of those additional 2 million sales it got from the re-release on PC and current gen consoles, over 1 million were on consoles.

It's sales figures are probably something like 80% Playstation, 15% PC and 5% Xbox.

Here's the Platinum Sales screencap from Capcom's IR page, just before Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen was released on PC.
You can only see Dragon's Dogma here, not even Dark Arisen, as by that point it didn't even reach 1 million copies.
Even at the very best scenario, it sold less than 2.3 million copies by the time PC version came out.

I was actually sentient in 2012 unlike you. When Dragons Dogma broke 1 million sales something like 820k were on PS3 and the other 180k or so on Xbox.

Outside of maybe Resident evil, this is common among all Capcom games and easy to confirm due to the leaks. Monster Hunter World for example sold more in Playstation in Japan than it did on Xbox in the entire world.

  81. 11 months ago

Honestly, if Sony bought up Konami or SquareEnix, I wouldn't mind. Both of them have IPs that are being entirely wasted, mistreated, or just managed terribly. While I'm not sure Sony would make for a massive improvement overall, considering how much blundering Konami and SquareEnix have been doing over the years, it really couldn't hurt.

Capcom would have the biggest impact though. While Ubisoft pumps out popular games (awful as they may be), Capcom has been putting out massive hits within recent years. Debate over whether the Resident Evil remakes are good, the changes to Monster Hunter's formula, or whether Street Fighter is a mess, but you can't deny the sales.

Sony has so far acquired Bungie (all they make is fricking Destiny and still overpaid massively for their acquisition) and a bunch of literally who studios. Each of those publishers is a massive fricking juggernaut. I myself don't understand exactly how this all works, but I don't think buying a company is as simple as having enough money to match their market cap...

They wouldn't. They only own roughly 16%. Only Kadokawa has a majority. Unless Tencent's shares have more voting rights which I doubt. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to block Kadokawa from selling their stake to Sony and giving them a majority.

              Anonymous

              1. That would assume kadokawa board would want to sell their cash cow
              2. That would assume Sony would be happy not fully owing one of their internal development studios
              3. That would assume Sony would automatically win a bidding war for those shares when tencent as a shareholder have a duty to be informed of such a deal

None of that is relevant to the question "Would Sony need Tencent to agree to gain control of FromSoftware?"
