Games are already 80 Euro here in Europe. For comparison they were 50 Euro in the PS3 gen. Some games are more and some are less. Hogwarts Legacy was 85 Euro on day 1. Alan Wake 2 was 60 Euro. Zelda totk was 60 Euro.

Ps5 also has payed online which over the course of its lifespan is 80x6$ that's 80$ a year for 6 years which is an average lifespan which makes it cost an additional 480$. And take in to account games on consoles cost more than on PC and just getting game pass or humble bundle or pirating games will save you a shit ton of money in the long run.
Consoles are really only worth it for the handful of exclusives but they dont even have that going for them anymore.
They are all welcome to charge whatever they want. So let them charge 100 bucks. But I'm pretty sure they will find people are less likely to be bothered buying games in general if they cost that much. In the 360 gen I used to buy loads of games as I could get them for 40 to 50 bucks day 1 but now they are 70 so I buy way less games. Last year I only bought 2 games.
The triple A model is quite literally unsustainable. Budgets, timelines and marketing budgets all need to start being scaled back because they are not leading to better games, but games that all have to follow a template.

PlayStation should just go full premium mode. PS6 will be $999 for the base model with 2 TB of storage and $1,299 for PS6 4TB of storage. All games for the platform will cost $80 minimum but $90 on average. No optical drive. PS+ Premium is now the only tier, so it's rebranded as simply PS+ and will code $20 more than it does right now. Backward compatibility with PS3 via cloud is gone and only goes back to PS4.
They can release a PS2 mini for $299 that comes packed with 10 of the biggest hits of the PS2 (no Tony Hawk, EA sports games or any of that. You're getting God of War 1, Gran Turismo 4, Katamari Damacy, FFX, Kingdom Hearts 1, Ace Combat, Devil May Cry 1, Shadow of the Colossus, Tekken Tag Tournament, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater). Jump right the frick in to premium mode because people will b***h about it, but they're going to pay up because it's PlayStation.
I think if this were a decade ago yes. But they can absolutely justify it by saying people spend thousands on a gaming PC, they spend more on premium iPhones and Android phones, and they can say the value of their 1st party linueps dating back to PS4 (with PS4 technically only being for cloud play) are worth the cost. They don't have to tell them about PS+ Extras which will come down the line and "bring back" PS3 backward compatibility either.
In reality most people aren't spending thousands on gaming PCs and PCs/mobile devices have a lot more use value than a dedicated gaming console. Video game consoles will never, ever be able to compete with those things at premium prices.
You VERY much underestimate the PlayStation brand if you think this. It's not "$599 US Dollars" Sony anymore. Back in 2006, yes that was a problem, but that whole climate was different. We didn't even want smartphones with voice assistance because we didn't want something always listening to us and mobile gaming was just Angry Birds and Temple Run. We surely didn't want to buy something for $600 when we didn't even know what games it'd get to justify it, but we grew up in a different time which led up to that. PlayStation today is akin to Apple in terms of brand recognition and brand loyalty in the video game industry. They are the top of the line, premium brand that you and your friends want to have just to show each other you have it. This, merged with modern day consumerist mindsets is a huge win for companies with the mindshare Sony has with PlayStation. You know it's going to have FIFA, it'll have COD (MS has already said COD will remain multiplat with PlayStation), it'll have Madden, and it'll have the next GTA. What matters is that you aren't paying for the poverty, generic console in the Xbox (if they are still even making consoles by the time PS6 comes out). Having a PlayStation is a status indicator and everyone who's anyone wants a PlayStation. It's why I don't understand people here complaining about PS5s and even PS Portables selling so much despite "having no games" or, in the case of the PS Portable, not being great ideas. That literally doesn't matter since it's infinitely more important to have one and say you do even if all you do is play one game and it's a doorstop afterward. Outside of TLoU2Remastest, they don't have any first party titles lined up for next year that we know of. Sony is also one of the publishers most notorious for announcing/revealing games years before release and constantly doing new trailers for them. The fact they have nothing announced/revealed either means they have decided unannounced to do a complete 180 on their reveal/release strategy they've been using for well over a decade and go with the "reveal and release within 9 months or less" or Sony has nothing lined up for next year and most of 2025.

TLoU2 probably had a total spend of ~$330-350 million ($220 for development, $110-130 for press and marketing) according to Sony's official PlayStation blog, it has sold "10 million" copies as of June 2022, but it has also been on tons of steep discounts ever since release. A $350m total spend would require ~6.9-7.3 million units sold without discounts and a physical/digital sales ratio where the vast majority were digital sales. The 10 million number after 2 years on the market is the only sales number given outside of it selling 4 million in it's opening weekend, showing that sales fell off a cliff shortly after, and that a huge number of the 6 million sold between opening weekend and 2 years later were sold at a discount. It is fairly safe to assume that TLoU2 was not a huge financial success, and it at the very best barely broke even and at worst just fell short of doing so.
It's $50 remaster was likely done on the cheap and with minimal marketing, lets assume a ~$30mil total spend, hoping to capitalize on the successes of the streaming show and maybe turn TLoU2 into a net profit should it pull in 1-1.5 million without discounts.
Based on the idea of a "full price" copy of TLoU2 resulting in Sony receiving $50 on average as while they would've received $60 on digital copies, they likely only saw $40 or so per physical copy after factoring in the physical product itself and the retailer cut. We can go by Sony's own statement that 4 million of those copies were sold at full price, meaning it made ~$200 million. The question then becomes at what average price were the remaining 6 million copies sold for in order for TLoU2 to turn a profit?
If they were sold on average for $30, then TLoU2 likely made money, in this case it's total return would've been around $380m. Which isn't great on a total spend of at least $330m, but likely $350 or so million. At best, TLoU2, probably profited $40-50 million. But all of those profits and then some were immediately burned on the failed live service title. Hell, the price of developing and marketing the Remaster is about as much as they profited from making the original game.

Games are already 80 Euro here in Europe. For comparison they were 50 Euro in the PS3 gen. Some games are more and some are less. Hogwarts Legacy was 85 Euro on day 1. Alan Wake 2 was 60 Euro. Zelda totk was 60 Euro.

Ps5 also has payed online which over the course of its lifespan is 80x6$ that's 80$ a year for 6 years which is an average lifespan which makes it cost an additional 480$. And take in to account games on consoles cost more than on PC and just getting game pass or humble bundle or pirating games will save you a shit ton of money in the long run.
Consoles are really only worth it for the handful of exclusives but they dont even have that going for them anymore.

PlayStation should just go full premium mode. PS6 will be $999 for the base model with 2 TB of storage and $1,299 for PS6 4TB of storage. All games for the platform will cost $80 minimum but $90 on average. No optical drive. PS+ Premium is now the only tier, so it's rebranded as simply PS+ and will code $20 more than it does right now. Backward compatibility with PS3 via cloud is gone and only goes back to PS4.
They can release a PS2 mini for $299 that comes packed with 10 of the biggest hits of the PS2 (no Tony Hawk, EA sports games or any of that. You're getting God of War 1, Gran Turismo 4, Katamari Damacy, FFX, Kingdom Hearts 1, Ace Combat, Devil May Cry 1, Shadow of the Colossus, Tekken Tag Tournament, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater). Jump right the frick in to premium mode because people will b***h about it, but they're going to pay up because it's PlayStation.

I think if this were a decade ago yes. But they can absolutely justify it by saying people spend thousands on a gaming PC, they spend more on premium iPhones and Android phones, and they can say the value of their 1st party linueps dating back to PS4 (with PS4 technically only being for cloud play) are worth the cost. They don't have to tell them about PS+ Extras which will come down the line and "bring back" PS3 backward compatibility either.
In reality most people aren't spending thousands on gaming PCs and PCs/mobile devices have a lot more use value than a dedicated gaming console. Video game consoles will never, ever be able to compete with those things at premium prices.
You VERY much underestimate the PlayStation brand if you think this. It's not "$599 US Dollars" Sony anymore. Back in 2006, yes that was a problem, but that whole climate was different. We didn't even want smartphones with voice assistance because we didn't want something always listening to us and mobile gaming was just Angry Birds and Temple Run. We surely didn't want to buy something for $600 when we didn't even know what games it'd get to justify it, but we grew up in a different time which led up to that. PlayStation today is akin to Apple in terms of brand recognition and brand loyalty in the video game industry. They are the top of the line, premium brand that you and your friends want to have just to show each other you have it. This, merged with modern day consumerist mindsets is a huge win for companies with the mindshare Sony has with PlayStation. You know it's going to have FIFA, it'll have COD (MS has already said COD will remain multiplat with PlayStation), it'll have Madden, and it'll have the next GTA. What matters is that you aren't paying for the poverty, generic console in the Xbox (if they are still even making consoles by the time PS6 comes out). Having a PlayStation is a status indicator and everyone who's anyone wants a PlayStation. It's why I don't understand people here complaining about PS5s and even PS Portables selling so much despite "having no games" or, in the case of the PS Portable, not being great ideas. That literally doesn't matter since it's infinitely more important to have one and say you do even if all you do is play one game and it's a doorstop afterward. Sony would be very wide to capitalize on it.

Outside of TLoU2Remastest, they don't have any first party titles lined up for next year that we know of. Sony is also one of the publishers most notorious for announcing/revealing games years before release and constantly doing new trailers for them. The fact they have nothing announced/revealed either means they have decided unannounced to do a complete 180 on their reveal/release strategy they've been using for well over a decade and go with the "reveal and release within 9 months or less" or Sony has nothing lined up for next year and most of 2025.
TLoU2 probably had a total spend of ~$330-350 million ($220 for development, $110-130 for press and marketing) according to Sony's official PlayStation blog, it has sold "10 million" copies as of June 2022, but it has also been on tons of steep discounts ever since release. A $350m total spend would require ~6.9-7.3 million units sold without discounts and a physical/digital sales ratio where the vast majority were digital sales. The 10 million number after 2 years on the market is the only sales number given outside of it selling 4 million in it's opening weekend, showing that sales fell off a cliff shortly after, and that a huge number of the 6 million sold between opening weekend and 2 years later were sold at a discount. It is fairly safe to assume that TLoU2 was not a huge financial success, and it at the very best barely broke even and at worst just fell short of doing so.
It's $50 remaster was likely done on the cheap and with minimal marketing, lets assume a ~$30mil total spend, hoping to capitalize on the successes of the streaming show and maybe turn TLoU2 into a net profit should it pull in 1-1.5 million without discounts.
Some more math.
Based on the idea of a "full price" copy of TLoU2 resulting in Sony receiving $50 on average as while they would've received $60 on digital copies, they likely only saw $40 or so per physical copy after factoring in the physical product itself and the retailer cut. We can go by Sony's own statement that 4 million of those copies were sold at full price, meaning it made ~$200 million. The question then becomes at what average price were the remaining 6 million copies sold for in order for TLoU2 to turn a profit?
If they were sold on average for $30, then TLoU2 likely made money, in this case it's total return would've been around $380m. Which isn't great on a total spend of at least $330m, but likely $350 or so million. At best, TLoU2, probably profited $40-50 million. But all of those profits and then some were immediately burned on the failed live service title. Hell, the price of developing and marketing the Remaster is about as much as they profited from making the original game.
