Not even close. Maybe someday when an MMO lets you have text conversations with NPCs, and they can actually interpret and do things you ask of them

it's missing the whole point of mmos though, i want to show off and assert my dominance over other human players and have shit (titles, mounts, cosmetics etc) that they do not have because i am better at the game than they are
you get none of that with npcs, they are worthless

Yeah man AI controled NPC's have never existed in video games ever, this is a real shock to the system

have you played privateservers? The third worlders and slavs are basically bots so this is an improvement. Frick yayayas, huehues and slavs
Clearly you have not seen RuneScape recently. You can now set up bots that use chat Ai to talk to people that show up. Even leave and do quests with people that ask it for help or give advice or directions
