I think the whole reason he was chosen was cause Sakurai wanted to challenge himself and see just how much he was able to pull off. With Steve and Sora he has to feel accomplished in his abilities.

Honestly, I’m sure the only reason why Disney even picked up the phone is because it was from Nintendo. Not saying that Smash and, to a lesser extent, Sakurai aren’t high profile enough to get their foot in through the door, but I’m sure The Mouse has been itching to wring out Nintendo for everything they’ve got and welcomed an opportunity to do so.

It's cool that Sakurai got him in but the reason why it was so hard to believe he'd get in is also the reason his inclusion is ultimately really lackluster: no Disney characters. morons and KH fanatics who don't care that disney characters aren't in don't get that the big appeal of the whole series was the surreality and joy in having these goofy cartoons from your childhood in a dumb anime game. They had to scrape any reference to Donald and goofy, Kirby couldn’t get the kingdom key but a cute keyblade knockoff made of light instead, and Mario couldn’t outright be shown holding the physical kingdom key. Take a moment to imagine how expensive it was just to show the hidden Mickey on the kingdom key lol
