I can understand this game not being someone's thing if they're into online battling, but I never understood the animosity towards it. Giving you more options on how to interact with Pokemon in the wild is simply a good thing and the only flaws with it is that there should have been even deeper interactions and Pokemon behaviors.

It proves that Pokemon doesn't need to follow the formula and introduced a lot of things Pokegays said would never ever work, so they're extremely bitter about how it reflects on the mainline games
I liked the method for catching pokemon. It's way more fun than chucking 50 ultraballs to catch one mon.
I also like that you can learn a bunch of move but only equip 4 at a time, it's way more intuitive.
Those are the only things I like about the game.

To use an example from another franchise, Transformers movie fans hate the Bumblebee movie and the character designs from that movie with a firey passion because the movie was well liked and the designs looked like the characters were supposed to, two things they said were impossible and would look bad for a Transformers movie. First time I'm a while I've gotten truly invested in a Pokemon game, glad they did something other than the same tired old formula for once.
thought i would hate this game because i’m a purist when it comes to not changing up the usual formula (it’s why i’ve never downloaded GO and lets go eevee/pika are the only mainline games i haven’t played), but i REALLY enjoyed this game. it just has a certain charm, it has that magic in it that’s been missing from pokemon since i was a kid. i just love how stylized it is and its gameplay can be repetitive but there’s something addictive and enjoyable about it. genuinely the best pokemon game since b2w2 imo

Obviously it’s still a pokémon game but it has more surface similarities to Monster Hunter than it does to BOTW. SV is open world and allows you to do stuff in a non linear fashion, even Yahtzee who dislikes pokémon noticed the similarities to Monster Hunter.
they even put this in as an easter egg, the monster hunter influence is explicit

It just took steps that mainline games nowadays are afraid to take. Catching mons and battling felt very exciting. It does have terrible replay value though and it's not fully open world with no online features. Next legends game will be better hopefully
