    >wtf I have to take 2 seconds out of my day to cast a spell (or use any of the other 200 ways of soul trapping, including straight up buying filled soul gems) in order to use the single most powerful mechanic in the game??? TOOOOOOODD

crafting and enchanting would be worthless if you could just find better equipment out in the world

Artifacts are for collecting. Smithing and enchanting are for your actual gear.

Crafting doesn't belong in open worlds for this very reason. It should only be included like it is in Elden Ring where it just covers consumables and doesn't have stat requirements to make things. Making loot shittier to justify players making their own loot forces everyone into the crafting skills or makes them accept that their character will e shittier. Doesn't matter if you play a warrior type or thief type or mage type, if you're not enchanting in Skyrim your character is just strictly worse. It sucks.

You don't need to craft if you don't want to.

I would agree if it was a multiplayer game or a competitive one, but it's babby's first rpg. I never level smithing because I can't be arsed to grind it out and only go out of my way to grind enchanting if I'm playing a mage that needs 100% mana cost reduction.
Who cares if your character isn't as optimized as it could be.

Just buy gems that are filled, don't bother with soul trapping unless you get the black star.

Just soul trap a dead guy over and over. You can hit max conjuration in no time.

soultrapping is cool as frick and makes me feel like a feared, powerful mage. imagine getting your soul yanked out and its energy used for enchanting purposes. must be awful

Considering we know what happens to those who get soul trapped i can then say with confidence that it is indeed awful.

I misremembered a bit, being IN the gem doesn't seem to be that much as you are just in a gem now, having that gem be USED however is the bad thing as you are now sent to the Soul Cairn for the rest of eternity and your memories slowly start to fade over the (presumed) decades or even centuries, probably kind of like dementia.

Remember Soul Cairn from vampire DLC?
          That.

They are trapped by some soul sucking israelites for eternity to be their slave goyim.

Sadly I never got the vamp dlc. I remember my friends back at launch complaining about the constant attacks that their npcs were dying in masse and lots of quests were unfinished because of that.

Is using black soul gems even allowed in-universe? Not creating them, but using them. After all, it's much worse than just murdering someone.

  8. 11 months ago

I've never had to soul trap because there's already so many filled gems lying around and as loot.
Why are you even needing to do that in the first place when there's a near limitless supply of prefilled gems out there?

  9. 11 months ago

How do they get them into the gems? Do they force the soul in? Sounds sloppy

The spell causes a temporary harmonic balance between soul and gem. If the soul is freed during the duration of the spell the harmonic resonance pulls the soul into the gem.
It is like a magnet bit not exactly.

Absorbs the soul as the soul leaves the body during death. And the worst part they they know it because they don't go to heaven or hell. They are trapped in an endless void of darkness screaming feeling pain of death for eternity until either the soulgem is crushed or used. I remember reading a book in Skyrim that described some guy finding a soul gem that was over a century year old. And he could hear the screams and weeping from the man at night.

How does the average citizen in Elder Scrolls deal with the fact that you can buy a trapped, eternally-damned soul in mage shops everywhere?

You can only buy gems from animals/monsters. Those don't go to Soul Cairn and are alright to use.

Black Gems use human/mer souls and those are forbidden/illegal.

Enchant a weapon with 1 second of soul trap.

I just enchanted a bow or dagger with a one second soul trap. It only needs the killing blow and because of the low duration the amount of uses is high.

soul trapping and enchanting is a kino mechanic if you take 5 minutes to read about how it works.

My problem with both enchanting and blacksmithing is that they both become required for you to improve your gear to the best possible limits.

        Anonymous

        You don't need uber gear.
Armor cap is a hard cap and uber weapons get boring quick.

          Anonymous

You don't need to craft if you don't want to.

Its moreso the fact that you can't get uber gear outside of crafting.
The game has all these blacksmiths and enchanters in the world and you're telling me that none of them can offer their services to me and basically want me to frick off and do it myself?

because they're normal people, if you want something beyond normal you usually have to do it yourself, just like irl

Can't recommend the smart souls skse plugin enough. Keeps you from filling gems with souls smaller than they can hold.

    Alchemy is just as bad
If you use it 'properly' its utterly useless, but if you use it optimally it becomes so powerful that you might as well just use console commands.

Limited use enchantments are among the first things I mod out. A sword running out of “magic ammo” in merely 30 swings is horseshit, on top of having to swap to cast the soul trap spell on something with no way of knowing if your soul gems are big enough. It’s bad for role playing non-conjurors too. It reminds me of upkeep debuffs back when I played WoW, where you’d put a spell on something for no other reason than the fact it added 10% more damage. Lame shit.
