Soulsborne criticisms

I try so so so hard not to be a toxic souls fan, but 99.9% of your fricking “criticisms” are just skill issues. I’m sorry, but you need to get better at the game to have the aptitude to find flaws in it.

Exactly. That’s why it drives me nuts that people will say “____ boss is so cheap”, or they b***h about “”””artificial difficulty “””

Look man, I’ll help you get through it because I’m not a toxic butthole, but you need to understand that you sucking at parts of the game doesn’t mean it’s bad

I know that mechanic can be frustrating, but you need to realize that this boss is intentionally designed to be a tough motherfricker. It’s not a required boss, and is quite out of the way. You traveled far for a challenge, why rob yourself of that?

      >games are pretty easy, especially if you take your time and look at what the enemy is doing

it's not that easy though. You still need time to learn patterns for example or the game's mechanics. There's harder games for sure, but fromsoft games don't play themselves.

the issue with the games is they're both piss-easy and bullshit hard purely because they're so shitty. like you could basically spam that frost kick or use the edgelord katana to just get through the entirety of elden ring but that doesn't really make up for the fact anything else is basically pounding nails into your wiener with how stupid and unfair it is. shit like the enemies dodging out of your magic attacks the split frame before you even cast it even if you're facing AWAY from them is just fricking moronic regardless of the player's skill level, to players trying to play legitimately with the 'normal' stuff it makes it impossible and to people min-maxing and picking only the broken stuff like that delayed laser beam that actually excels specifically because the NPC's are moronic and only dodge on button imput it makes the game not even a challenge. its two ends of an extreme instead of just being one solidly designed experience

think of them as an IQ test

if they are bad at the game, they have poor problem solving skills, reaction time, etc.

and then make fun of them and insult them like we do to dumb people

Well yeah, since IQ is nothing but pattern recognition ability, but it's also a twitch muscle fiber test, and average people are not good at that either

Pretty much, if people are able to do no-hit runs, not just that but no-hit runs under severe restrictions like level 1 or no upgrades, then most of it is skill issue. That does not mean there isnt valid criticism, but people crying that the Chained Ogre or Margit are BS can't be taken seriously.

Yesterday I beat malenia with a big fat piece of metal and I it was incredible fun. Finding those attacks when I could charge heavy and leave her as defenceless as teenager in a hentai was pretty amazing.

  9. 1 month ago

Yeah there's good criticism, the gameplay is basic, therefore boring, and the feedback you get from moving and attacking actually feels bad, the dodge roll looks ugly and not cool.
I have this issue with certain games, I can't stand certain Tekken characters because of their PS1 animations, even to this day, it feels like ass.
but other than that, the game is just too boring and basic, roll and attack, rinse and repeat.

Can anyone recommend me an actually difficult (but not artificially so), action based singleplayer game?

      >artificial
Every video game is artificially difficult.

How so? Do you think there isn't a single game that promotes challenges in a fair way?

          Anonymous

Because video games are artificial, and therefore all challenge within them is fake and inherently designed to be beaten.

In the case of Soulsborne, you’re right, it is unfair… for the bosses. You can’t die, so they have to beat you until you stop trying. You just have to win once.

            >all challenge within them is fake and inherently designed to be beaten.
That's simply false. There's a big space between "impossible" and "fake challenge". Bashing your head against the keyboard isn't enough for a lot of games.

Without some variation of “wahhh make the game easier for me”, what is the difference between “real” and “artificial” challenge on an entirely artificial medium.

To me real difficulty is making things harder by making them harder. Examples are (believable) feints, bigger move sets, smaller tells, more switchups, better ai.
Artificial difficulty is shit that isn't actually hard but only exists to make things take longer. For example, a hard mode that just gives everything 3x xp. A move that is easy to avoid if you know it but effectively guaranteed to one shot if you don't (Poe has a ton of horrible examples of this).

I don't reall like most Souls games, my criticism is largely due to personal taste rather than objective issues though, I do like ER a lot but I still think it's a bad idea for Mitsubishi to cling obsessively to certain Souls elements.
If I had to make some objective criticism about the game though:
    >Having your offhand weapon command range limited to standard L1 is ultra gay, you can't even do dashing L1
    >Rolls still look stupid as hell, we could have at least dashes for light load builds but for some reason they stuck to rolls again even when they gave Melina the same fricking dash the Nox people use, meaning they could totally have the player model do it
    >Still no critical/riposte for whips, let alone dedicated ashes of war
    >Still have nonsensical drop conditions for items, Blackflame monks can't drop their CGS for some reason but ONE LONE FLAME MONK (the only one in the game with a CGS) in the middle of fricking nowhere in a fricking hero's grave can
Hopefully they put this engine to rest soon so they can create some new base to reuse for the next two decades.

    >I’m sorry, but you need to get better at the game to have the aptitude to find flaws in it.
I had a very eye opening moment in a FF7Rebirth thread the other day.
There's a mini game that before it starts explicitly has a popup tutorial that tells you there are two types of enemies, one weak against physical attacks and one weak against magic attacks, and then the game forces you to play a character that specifically has a massive aoe physical attack and a massive aoe magical attack.
And anons were stumped as to how to beat it.

That's the average skill level on here. And it plummets when you start getting into actual difficult games. I would genuinely wager less than 5% of the entire population of this board are genuinely good at video games, with 1% of that 5% being turbo autistic mega gamers that could probably make a career out of it. The rest are dogshit wood tier players or people that don't even play video games, they just watch streamers and letplays.

i binge watched people fight malenia when rlden ring came out and was blown away by how many people didnt manage their stamina at all or use positional play and often just spammed weapon arts and health potions until the boss died and when that didnt work they were stumped.

souls veterans are fricking dogshit, i only started playing these games last year personally and had to handhold my "souls veteran" friend in seamless coop Elden Ring through every single boss, he couldnt even defeat the fricking Erdtree Avatar on his own. Elden Ring level design is the worst since base DS2, too many graces, every path through the Legacy Dungeons is surprisingly short. They are full of side areas for exploration but I genuinely can't think of a single notable shortcut outside of the Stormveil Elevator (which is pointless due to the abundance of Graces), the bridge in Volcano Manor, and the Elevator before Loretta, both of which are right before the boss anyway. That defining feeling of mapping out the area in your head and realizing how the map loops around is completely absent.

I played Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 and there's just nothing in there to motivate me to continue. The levels are drab and uninteresting, there's no feeling of getting more powerful from leveling up or getting new equipment, beating the bosses feels more like that annoyed feeling you get from hearing the answer to a dumbass wordplay riddle than a feeling of actually getting better at a skill. The whole experience is like it was scientifically designed to be unappealing.

there are all sorts of items to make you OP. good items are huge power spikes in souls. the biggest problem is the upgrade system, they should scrap it entirely and instead have stones of power that increase all weapons you use or something.

Elden Ring is what happens when you take a very shallow formula too far.
