It shows how many people have to be implicitly or explicity told what to like. This character design is probably a decade old, they had enough time to discover shit for themselves but some people just aren't made to think that way.
I mean, it could just be a matter of awareness and advertising. Humans have worked that way since the dawn of time, it just happens on a MUCH shorter timescale now because of the higher rate of information exchange.
Well sure but some people just need to perceive something as popular to develop an interest and that's what makes fotm trends like these annoying. There is no way all these artists just "never saw" a character from a popular nintendo franchise. Some people just have no inherent curiosity
I think saying people have 'no' curiosity because they only catch on to stuff like this when it becomes popular is a bit extreme, don't you think? Maybe it's just something they're not that interested in, or the interest is low enough that they're not particularly interested in seeking it out over more familiar stuff. Kind of like how a lot of people are probably happy to eat the same meals for a long time but might try something interesting or exotic when they're on holiday, or if it becomes a fad, or if a friend recommends it.
