>Spend almost an hour trying to kill a seemingly unkillable enemy in a lategame stage that you actually have to lose to/run away from in order to progress, hoping the devs added a special reward for having the skill to actually beat said enemy or at least survive for a amount of time on Hard difficulty
>Turns out the enemy actually is programmed to have infinite health and you really can't win
What the frick's the point of gitting gud if there's no actual win condition? I could've used that wasted time to beat the game and move on to the next one.

I'm not specifically talking about pic related by the way.
Then you've committed a bannable offense
This. What the frick are you talking about moron OP?
Do you dumb fricking Black folk know how to read or are these bot posts? Do you not know what an unkillable boss is?
>hoping the devs added a special reward for having the skill to actually beat said enemy or at least survive for a amount of time on Hard difficulty
what are some games that actually do this?
Not exactly a reward, but if you hit Ridley 200+ times in Ceres Station on Super Metroid, you'll be treated to him accidentally dropping the Metroid capsule and having to swoop back in to pick it up before retreating. You get nothing else for this except you don't have to listen to your HP beep on the way back to the ship.
Carnivorous Trees in Phantasy Star IV. I spent over an hour fighting them, used up all my rare health and battle items, all magic and technique points, down to a sliver of health, then finally retreated and it turned out the only way to progress was to retreat. The battle lasted so long I forgot how long it was before my last save so I just had to keep going. It's my favorite RPG but I honestly felt betrayed at the time.
Seth from Tomb Raider 4
Zeus from GoW 2
Malek from Blood Omen
SA-X from Metroid Fusion
>Seth from Tomb Raider 4
>Malek from Blood Omen
>SA-X from Metroid Fusion
I wasted so much time on all three of these Black folk.
>Malek from Blood Omen
The opening battle where the villagers attack Kain is also unbeatable. I once racked up hundreds of kills in an autistic fit before finally having to let myself be killed. There are even enemies in the houses if you can make it inside of any of them.
Balio and Sunder from Breath of Fire 3 was like this, the first time you fight them they either have infinite health or their HP gets reset to maximum ever turn, I can't remember. I read in an FAQ once that it is possible to beat them but the game continues on as if nothing happened.
The idea that you would have a legion of villagers throw themselves at you and not give up after 100+ deaths is kind of humorous at least.
It would have been funnier if after you kill a few hundred, they just stop coming and it just fades to "the end".
Why do they even throw villagers at you instead of mercenaries or something anyway?
For me it’s killing the box monsters and elder dragons in monster hunter, in the quests where you’re supposed to run away or just repel them- and then getting kickass parts and big money early game
Which ones?
You should get a special scene and a reward of some kind before the enemy defeats you with plot damage so the story can continue
Vile from Megaman X is the only example I can think of where you're immediately shown that you can't win and the game progresses right away when he defeats you, but then again it's a very early boss and some people might reset the SNES to fight him again
In Golden Sun, if you kill the mysterious duo at the start of the game, everything continues as normal but several flags indicating that you have are set. No one knows what the flags do.
It unlocks the golden temple arena though? Me and my friends knew about this back in the day. Really cool addition, if a little hidden.
Looking it up now seems like there are no mentions of it though.
>No one knows what the flags do
Yeah I think those are for the arena like the other anon said.
moron.
i like the idea of a game putting in bosses that are like "hey, if you can beat this boss, you're an exceptional player. if you can't, that's fine too". on the other hand, if you think about how you're investing your time, having an aneurysm over a boss it turns out you're not meant to beat in the first place seems fricking stupid.
not every investment is worth it.
