I enjoyed the main story tho
I think it was the right move. Even though I had a lot of fun with the game, I don't think it did enough to distinguish it from the previous game, the Venom plotline felt like basically every other Venom plotline in popular media, and it's a huge brand-name that doesn't really need the recognition. People will know of and acknowledge it for years, but stuff like TotK's building mechanics and BG3's reinvigoration of a tabletop RPG game for the new era feel more deserving of praise.
Very by tge numbers sequel, not surprising it failed to stand out when every other sequel there was decades later rtc. I’m glad they allow you to remove the training wheels on swinging though, actually so fun to move around just from that small change.

Both Spider man 2 and Tears of the kingdom just asset flipped their existing map from previous game with some new areas (SM2 having Queens, TOTK having the underground cave)
Biggest difference is TOTK has a new exciting game mechanic (zonite building) while SM2 just had more of the same combat with slightly different abilities and perks.
Don't forget that you ignore the building for most of TotK if it's not your cup of tea. In Spider-Man 2 they actively forced you to do more of the thing people told them sucked in the first game (the MJ stealth sections).
I mean, is it even a surprise? Take a look at the playerbase of Black personman 2, it's 13 year old kids whose parents got them a PS5 with it for their birthday. Not even manchildren play this game. I mean, imagine telling someone in real life you unironically think a spiderman game is worth game of the year.
