They got way too wienery in le power of love and wound up heartbroken, mindbroken and ultimately BUCK broken.
God the western splatoon fanbase is insufferable. One might think it’s a game for kids but taking a look at the art in game and stupid usernames makes it apparent that many western splatoon fans are troons.

As pointed out by an anon in a previous thread he’s suppose to play off shiver and frye’s extreme personalities as more level-headed, but the issue is that shiver and frye’s personalities are far from that level of extreme for it to work. They had the idea, but half-assed it, so it just doesn’t work
It also doesn't work as he usually only makes dumb side comments too instead of doing any tard wrangling. When all three characters are basically morons there's no room for anybody to stand out personality wise so Shiver takes it just on looks.

Eh, Nintendo has definitely dropped things pretty soon after they show something off in say a nintendo direct, which chances are we'll be getting one next month. To put it in perspective, Octo Expansion was released on March 8, and subsequently released June 13, a little over 3 months later. Now we already had side order revealed with very little information meaning it was early in devleopment, but I could see them showing it off next month, then it comes out in 2-3 months after that.

Overall pretty good. I think gold dynamo will be more fun than most people expect. Super chump is underrated and splat bomb is always a good sub.
Splat bombs are indeed very powerful tools. Super Chump has a niche for certain things. By themselves they're not the most threatening, but in a coordinated attack launched at the right place, with the right support you can have some interesting things happen. Mostly just distracts and disorients the opponent. I'd say Cooler is the better special between the two kits, but obviously splat bomb > sprinkler, so you could make the argument Gold will be better. Tacticooler is really strong though.

Shiver would probably use a katana or something, Frye is more brutish and would be a barbarian/pirate type fighter with an Axe. Bigman already has his stinger so it would make since he uses lances. I know canonically Frye uses Splatana but still I feel she's more of an Axe user if they were to exist in splatoon.

Frye is Pearl with absolutely NONE of Pearl's charisma. Even worse she's Callie 2.0 in that her persona is endlessly happy no matter the circumstance while being a tad clueless. Shiver's the smug without any of the b***h that Marie and US Marina exhibit on top of her attire hugging her body. Frye's got baggy pants and a big forehead. And that's not to say she can't look cute, problem they tried playing up the ogre aesthetic with her and it didn't work out as they hoped.

Come on now. I'm playing Splatoon 1 right now but it's not as good as 3. 3 is a lot more fleshed out and the maps are generally more consistently decent than the rest of the series. Splatoon 1 has the most really good maps but also its fair share of dogshit uplayable maps. It has the worst balance and amount of content too.
I do miss the original flounder heights though. It's in rotation right now and it's even more open than the Splatoon 3 version.

You could have said literally anything else good about 3 and I would have agreed. 3 is an improvement over 1 in literally every way EXCEPT the maps. The maps in 3 are dogshit. 1's only bad maps are Saltspray, Aerowana, and Moray Towers.
3's maps are bland and inoffensive at worst. You forgot Camp Triggerfish, the worst map in the entire series. And then there's Piranha Pit which can be fun but its layout is a fricking mess. For every good map in Splatoon 1 there's a terrible map alongside it. They had no idea how to design a shooter and it showed.

I don't have any strong feelings on Blackbelly Skatepark or Port Mackerel. Splatoon 1's stages were really hit or miss. Only half of them were any good. Splatoon 3's stages are at least consistently "okay". Nothing stands out about them but few are as terrible as what we got in the first game.
Even the bad levels of Splatoon had charm to them, and I mostly mean in regards to casual play. I know that the ranked modes had some awful variations of those levels but in something like Turf Wars even the bad levels were alright and charming.
What was nice about them is they had a personality. I would rather they take a chance and do something unique and risk it being a bad stage than sticking to this extremely safe and boring tetris block with one flank at best and uninkable walls everywhere philosophy. The stages are so samey it doesn't feel like an identity. But every stage in Splat 1 was unique, not just the aesthetics but in how it was designed. Splat 3 stages are just very sterile and restrictive in comparison.

And for a game that's supposed to have a chaos motif it's pretty damn ironic how "safe" these level designs are. Anything but chaotic because you know all the action is going to take place in one central area as you're forced to move through the meat grinder and get picked off by backliners who have very safe options and little ways to challenge them
Personality doesn't make it playable. I never want to play splat zones on Kelp Dome, Moray Towers, or Camp Triggerfish ever again. Tower Control and Rainmaker on Piranha Pit can frick right off. Maybe they're fine for casual turf war matches but they're so bad that I stop playing when they come into rotation. There's nothing in Splatoon 3 that makes me turn the game off.

So you have problems with the ranked variations of the game, and that's fine, but that's how it existed in Splat 1.
If those levels were ported to Splat 3 there would certainly be some changes into how they're implemented in the different modes here. I'm saying in their turf war forms, they were fine levels. They were memorable levels. There is nothing memorable about any of the stages in 3. Ranked layouts can be adjusted and improved upon, but having a level with zero flavor or personality beyond "oh hey that's the one with the meat grinder and only way to get into the enemy base and zero flanks" for so many of the god damn levels is just shit man. You're completely ignoring the critiques with 3's level design by just saying "uhh they're better than Splatoon 1" by only focusing on the worst maps of Splatoon 1. What are the good and new maps in 3? What are gonna be the maps that everybody remembers and looks back fondly on?

Its only big downside is some questionable map designs, otherwise, it's the best.
Some of you act like Splatoon 1/2 were perfect games.
It was definitely a quick cash grab but it's arguably an improvement on Splat 2 mechanically speaking. Better movement options and camera, better weapon balance. Stage design is lacking. Better Salmon Run. Tableturf is probably the most fleshed out "mini game" in any of them. Badges + banners + lockers offer some cool customization. Salmon Run is better, available all the time and with more features. Pools are also a welcome addition. Most people who are playing Splat 3 aren't going to want to go back to Splat 2 at this point because of these improvements, despite the flaws with the tetris block levels. Still fun to be had in the game.
The main hub is pretty cool as well. Lobbies are better too. Now removing League and replacing it with challenges was dumb. Open is supposed to be the casual ranked mode but it has all sorts of coordinated teams. Turf wars also suffers from coordinated discord teams as well. It would have been nice if they offered separate versions of those modes.
X battles are kind of shit and the western region is a ghost town being unable to find any matches sometimes for 15-20 minutes regardless of what your rank is.
Splatfests are less frequent, tricolors are a definitive downgrade from shifty stations and I haven't seen a single good argument against that. Tricolor mode is way lazier than getting a new unique stage every month with a unique gimmick. Tricolor battles are also awful in regards to matchmaking if one team is less populated, resulting in tons of mirror matches. When tricolor first was launched it would instead throw you into an open match if you couldnt find one, and it took months to "fix" that but the fix doesn't address it as well with tons of mirror battles for the more populated teams.
It does seem like less effort overall was put into this game. The rollout of less weapon kits and gear is not that great. Catalogue and seasonal rotations leave things really dry for months. All in all it's a mixed bag.
If we end up Splatoon 4 a few years into the successor of the Switch's lifespan than yeah definitely.
Otherwise it's hard to say if this is just the result of incompetence given how Animal Crossing went.

I doubt much development time was even put to that. Probably just a separate team of interns were given it to manage. That's how these side modes generally are while the main developers focus on everything else.

Maybe not. They're making a card game with 2D pngs, not 3D objects. They might not even know how to do 3D modeling, that's a separate talent of its own. Tableturf doesn't require that and could be made with very, very little resources and give inexperienced devs something to play with so they can grow a bit, but not giving the reins to the more impactful stuff.

Of course there are people that do multiple tasks at once, but generally, the programmer sticks to programming, the 3D assets creators stick to making 3D assets, and the concept artists stick to drawing concept art, and so on. A game like tableturf could be made with one novice programmer and an artist to do the illustration for the cards, it's not that complex of a thing. It's clearly not that much of a priority seeing as how it doesn't even have proper online matchmaking yet. Yes it's a more fleshed out game than say squid beats or squid jump but these side games give Splatoon a little more flavor and I guarantee you take very little resources and are done by interns.

I've heard that Flounder Heights is now seen as a less favorable stage among competitive players and that the verticality might be the problem. I watched that big tourney recently and the players were all alowed to submit their picks for the levels and modes they wanted, but nobody seemed to pick Flounder Heights. Now I remember people saying it was one of the better stages in 3 when it released just due to it being different, but what do you guys think about it in practice? What are the complaints competitive players are having? That it's too hard to approach if people control the middle section or what?

I continue to believe it's one of the better maps. I didn't like it in 1 since I felt it was too cramped, given the massive towers that bisect the map and don't actually have that much space to work with on top of them, but hoo boy does it feel like the lord's play yard compared to the true pain that is 3's micro wiener maps.
I'll also note that pro matches aren't necessarily a good judgement of game balance, since they're playing for the cash money, meaning the teams are organized with particular team comps and actual communication, and they're going to favor consistency.
It makes sense that competitive players have a certain meta in mind that most of the maps use because they're all the same except Flounder Heights.

Ninja squid is seen as mostly a slowdown to your swim speed when most competitive teams are tacticoolered up.
Ninja Squid is still very useful for weapons with short range and need to shark around to get kills like rollers.
As for alternative abilities you could use it depends entirely on what weapon/kit you're using. Just more utility abilities rather than shirt specific abilities are probably going to be more useful. Your swim speed ups, your special charge ups, your quick respawns, and so on. Depends on the playstyle and weapon, but at the end of the day it's not that big of a deal.

Well, it did get a slight buff in regards to the hit you take to your swim speed. Before it would cancel out one of your swim speed ups, but now your swim speed up should work as normal.
Use a website like https://sendou.ink/analyzer
to compare your speed with ninja squid and how many swim speeds you'll need. Even with the "buff" that ninja squid got, it still is a nerf to your swim speed, and in the tacticooler meta you're going to be revealed away, just moving slower now, so I think that's why most players would opt to rather run other abilities.

In a previous thread, there was a discussion about how Nintendo seemed afraid to have the Idols be actual antagonists. Looking at their older designs makes me feel like they were originally intended to be more villainous. Shiver looks especially haughty and domineering. Frye looks downright wild and aggressive. While these are traits they currently have, I get the impression they were softened for whatever reason.

A theory i’ve heard on why we’re still lacking a lot of gear and it’s not being added is because they’re wanting to do like what they did with season 3
With season 3 it dropped with the DLC that added in inkopolis plaza along with a lot of old S1 gear.
With speculation on Side Order being us fixing inkopolis square and unlocking it as another location, people theorize that once SO drops that’s when they’ll drop all the other S2 gear along with other stuff like the enperry dualies among other S2-centric stuff
The only problem I have with that is the timing. This game only has another year of support, if that.

This doesn't seem too farfetched to me. After all, what exactly kind of in-game reward could the DLC even have? Octo Expansion gave us an entire new race. So giving us Inkopolis square where you can watch Pearl and Marina perform during splatfests like the Squid sisters in the plaza would make a lot of sense. When you go the subway there's clearly room for you to go one other place. Cleaning up the square would also be not too different from how the singleplayer plays out where you're getting rid of goo to expose the hub world and progress.

It's funny that I didn't expect to like it based on pre-release material since I'm not big on slower weapons, but the range and the stupid little frickin ball-o mode are great.
Crab Tank is so cool. Sadly in Salmon Run, it's practicality is somewhat limited compared to other Specials like Ink Jet. That and it's not on the Weapon I main.

Honestly I'll take a crab over a booyah bomb and definitely over a reefslider. Being able to wipe out stingers and flyfish with the bomb has huge utility. Even its machine gun can mow things down pretty good, ball form can be used as defense, to revive teammates, and even deposit eggs. But it's not as good as inkjet I'll give you that.
It's biggest limiting factor is room. If you can safely maneuver, you're unstoppable, but if you accidentally deploy it in the wrong spot, it'll get wiped fast.
Also, some people don't know it moves faster sideways than forwards and backwards.
Crab Tank being a stationary special would be a good way to balance it, but the design we got is way cooler so who cares

I tried bringing the stock Splattershot to make use of the Jump+ and Suction Bombs, but everyone's bringing Blasters.
I tried going back to my Heavy Splatling, but now my Team isn't protecting the Tower after I jump on.
Blasters, Brushes, and buckets are really good in this mode. Even Dynamo is a lot better in this mode with that huge jumping horizontal flick, I'd say rollers are good in general for that in this mode.
You're using a Splatling from an elevated position, if your team is consistently having to protect you I feel like you are probably trying to take the tower way too recklessly.

I just thought it was interesting, because it just immediately hits you with this cool abstract concept that's made up of a series of curved surfaces, while as far as I can remember, there is not a single curved surface in the multiplayer maps of 3. I thought maybe the little blurb would elaborate on if this was key art or something, but judging by the MTL, it seems to just be talking about what a stage is.
A few market concepts. the bottom one featuring another curved surface, which will be a common theme here.
I have to wonder if they removed them because they couldn't get them to work properly with the squid surge or roll or something.

These made me very confused because they look more like singleplayer overworlds, but this is strictly the multiplayer map section. They just had some crazy ideas for it, more in line with the "chaos" theming.

There's no actual map here, but I thought it was interesting how pretty much none of the key features here were kept in the final version of the map, removing the brightness, greenery, and piles of scrapped cars.

Seems like they might have been going to lean into the idea of the Splatlands being poor more originally. It's something that's brought up in the story but not really reflected much in game.
Yeah, it was weird how Deep Cut mentioned they were treasure hunting to give money to those less fortunate, but everyone in Splatsville seems to be doing just fine.

Having some of the maps and weapons seem ramshackle would have helped. Funnily, I think the only map that does this is the Tri-Force map that looked like it was built from scrap. Giving Splatville a more rustic look and having more worn-out clothing options could have also helped sell this idea.
the clothes were definitely a big missed opportunity for selling the whole the splatlands is broke angle, basically there's the ripped shirt everyone replaced asap as to not look like a shitter and then the small fry amiibo set and that's it

Seems to me that they were probably a lot more serious about the desert wasteland theme early on, but its less work to be able to bring back the old map concepts so they toned the theme down overall.
it's more likely that shitch decade old hardware couldn't deal with their concepts so they had to go with what works and it's possible that 4 will have bigger and more detailed maps

It could be like Mario 64 combined with the cohock charge cannon waves. You would have to first get inside the cannon by swimming into it, and then you'd get in first person view and aim where you want it to shoot. That way you're less likely to do it by accident

I'm considering dropping this game mostly after the Splatfest. I would miss playing with the pool though, and these threads are mostly going strong with the new season doomposting. Have a feeling it will shrivel up real fast if we don't get Side Order news this season.
I'll probably take a long break from the game after Big Run. Since the Catalog's so meager there's no real rush to wrap it up.

Same, I got other games to play. I'll try out the new levels for a bit but they don't seem that exciting. Salmonid Smokeyard I remember from a two a bit being challenging but it's fuzzy. I believe that it will probably be rough as everyone says.
Devs are phoning it in here so why should I even give a shit about this game at this point. I have other games to play and that's part of the reason I dropped Splatoon 2 after about a year as well. So far I've put more hours in 3 than any other game though and it just feels like I could be spending my time better.

Most other games would be booming and thriving during the year 1 events, but this doesn't seem like it'll be anything of the sort. And there's still no Side Order anything. Man. Fair enough. Honestly, I kind of wish big runs were in the middle of seasons instead of immediately. Kind of something to look forward to.
For all its various faults, the base game is still really fun to play and I haven't stopped enjoying it. I remember the days when all you got was one game, period, no updates. And people enjoyed that shit for years on end. I guess I'm still in that mindset, because as long as they haven't fricked the core of the game then I still love to play it. Granted, times have changed and Splatoon should be held to more modern standards. So yes, in many aspects, the game has let people down a lot. But damn it, it's so addicting. Honestly, I should cut back myself. Not like I don't have a big ol backlog to get to. But killing fish is just so fun.

I only ever participated in Splatfest with Simmer season being the longest I've played this game consecutively since the 1st one. It's been a fun summer, but I gotta move on for now.

It's true that it's rare but you never know. You can get two bad spawns and identify that the third one is also bad but in the right spot to do it.
Season 3 had the most new gear in the catalog, but also the most recolors.It was still easily the most substantial update we got in the first year.
The Drizzle 2023 catalog has two less pieces of brand-new non-recolored gear than Chill 2022 (9 vs 11). However, this didn't account for the actual novelty of the gear so your opinion may vary there.
