    >One of the four pillars of this plan, which involves “strengthening customer contact points”, will see the publisher “shift to a multiplatform strategy”.

Damn, even corporate suits are capable of understanding that they are supposed to make products that people actually buy.

        ?????????????

        >Why are you ignoring the horrendous gameplay ?
The gameplay is the least of the problems with these games. They are fundamentally broken from the core. I don't actually mind the battle system in FF7R but FF16s combat is total garbage. Just mindless spam and extremely formulaic.

development cycles for games are usually 3-4 years long, moron.
If the entire production pipeline is tuned for PS5 first, then PC a year later, it's going to take at least 1 year to re-organize and assign people to porting much sooner, and another 1-2 years of time to get all their current and near future projects ready for multiplat releases.
You can't shift the focus of a software company that quickly when everyone is actively working on current projects.

The same thing that happened to capcom around the SFxT to SF5 era

They have a fricking insane amount of AA teams putting out multiple garbage releases every month that nobody buys while simultaneously their mainline AAA and big series is below expectations. They are in the “canceling mega man legends 3 and breath of fire” phase of their company restructuring. I think it will work to a certain extent but not as well as capcom since they had the giga hit world. Though you could argue the sustained success of the mmo is somewhat similar to the smash hit of MHW. Mentioning them both it’s ironic both of them had a collab. So yeah they are legit just copying capcom.

I also want to point out that capcom is now sliding back into their old shitty ways as they go back to focusing on B list shit like exoprimal

Its actually insane how they shackled some of the biggest games (FF7R2 and FF16) on deadstation 5. Those games had massive marketing and even some hype. They lost shitloads of sales buy not making them available.

Its actually insane how they shackled some of the biggest games (FF7R2 and FF16) on deadstation 5. Those games had massive marketing and even some hype. They lost shitloads of sales buy not making them available.

XVI was DMC lite with the worst aspects of FFXIV and a story that drops the ball hard after the first few hours.

You're also forgetting you can equip items that make your character auto dodge or makes your dog auto dodge. They give you items that play the game for you.

Good news. All SE had to do was make a FAITHFUL remaster of FF7. Instead, we got another convoluted piece of shit with time jannies and black NPCs out the ass thanks to the DEI frickers ruining vidya.

And FF16 was a carbon copy of FF14 but just as a single player. That kind of MMO single player shit is NOT GOOD for most gamers. The game should've been about 20 hours shorter but instead it's full of disgusting filter and nonsense.

The last good game I played by SE was Octopath 2. They need to start making games like that. More freedom. Less theme park Ubisoft nonsense

I also think that type of story would've been better served in something like an FF Tactics style game, honestly. It's too dour to take on that length of time with the style of gameplay it has.

Remake was ok because it didn't have Ubisoft towers and was linear enough to not bore me to tears. Rebirth is shit buddy. You just have shit taste. Go play some proper JRPGs. Open world games are garbage and overdone. And the thing is, FF7Rebirth isn't even a true open world game like BoTW. It's just a theme park like FF14 where you get to ride the toys in each zone then move onto the next one. There is no true freedom.

At the end of the day dude, you lost. FF7Rebirth failed and SE are gutting their employees. Hopefully, they don't make anymore games for a long time. The current games they are releasing aren't working and it's obvious why.

Square hasn't gotten with the times. They tried to bring FF back to its roots with Remake/Rebirth. There hasn't been a mainline with ATB or MP-based magic since FF12, or embraced classic FF ideas.

Modern gamers don't give a shit about FF. It's largely a millennial IP. They don't konw what modern gamers want which is why they have half-assedly been trying to chase trends with their other mainlines.

But Rebirth isn't really "back to its roots". Remake was arguably a better go at bringing it back. Rebirth is just Ubisoft tier. Millennials who were brought up on games like FF6 don't want this shit. So many of my millennial friends just won't touch FF games anymore because "it's not for me anymore" since they changed the fricking formula

What? As someone who played the original when it was new, the 'remake' certainly wasn't aimed at me, and definitely didn't feel anything like an attempt to bring it back to what it had been.

There were maybe a couple of fights that triggered nostalgia, but there was just way too much in the way of weird decisions that made the game get in the way of itself. Like if the idea was to update an accessible, simple to follow game so it could once again serve as a point of entry for new players, whose idea was it to cut the game to just the 2 hour tutorial area, expand that with 18 hours of additional crap, and then add in a confusing meta narrative that was impossible to follow?

Remaking FF7 was supposed to be the companies 'break glass in case of emergency' but they handled it so poorly I think they killed their most valuable property. I bought the first one out of curiosity, I'm not going to buy the second one, and I'll tell people to avoid it and just play the original.

The gameplay and the tone are the most FF a Final Fantasy has been in decades.
The problem is the story changes.

          Anonymous

The tone is good, character personalities are great but the gameplay sucks. The combat is just bad, not entirely turn based and not action, if you compare it to any other action RPG it's absolutely trash. The exploration is completely awful and the games "content" is soulless. VR Missions instead of putting stuff out in the "open" world, really? Every other ARPG these days has huge amounts of character customization too but I'll forgive them for that as it's not a Final Fantasy staple but it's just one more way in which Final Fantasy is behind the competition. Even Mana has like 15 "costumes" per character.

Respectfully disagree. I think it's the best combat system FF has done in an FF, and wish they'd take it into games beyond just the 7R games.
Managing ATB/swapping characters feels great and attacks feel weighty, something that was horribly missing in 15 and partially 16.

15 and 16 also have terrible gameplay so I certainly wasn't comparing it to them. I'd take 4 characters in a row over this, switching character also feels like shit I can't stand that in trashy gacha games and I can't stand it here. If it's going to attempt to be an action game then it's going to get compared to other action RPGs whether it's souls-likes, monhun, dragons dogma etc. And it's worse than all of them, Zelda (TotK) gameplay is barely existent but at least it's creative and fun to play with interacting with the world not just in combat

There were times the game felt right, but there was so much that just ruined the tone and any investment in what was going on.
The gameplay was an over complicated mess, even compared to stuff like the Xenoblade series.

The original worked because it was so simple. Two items, items have slots that take magic spheres. Numbers on everything just go up.
The sphere grid stuff, and all the other new systems just made it a lot less accessible even for people who were coming back to try it out.

FFXIII and FFXV completely killed the Final Fantasy band and it's now in a slow decline with no sign of recovery. There's no saving it, as Remake, XVI and Rebirth has shown. The quality of those games are actually irrelevant, the IP is permanently damaged

SE clearly sees the problem is console exclusivity and not the actual game. The game is the best they have released in a couple decades

                Anonymous

SE is wrong, console exclusivity is only one part of their problem. Capcom learned this the same way, they not only started to focus on PC but drastically improved all of their IPs. Resident Evil 2 was a massive step up from Resident Evil 7 for example and really started the new era of RE games. World took Monhun to new levels, SF6 revived a dead IP. Dragons Dogma 2 is probably the least innovative sequel but the exploration/RPG atmosphere was just as good as the original with better combat and despite the massive flaws it still beat expectations and they now want to consider it another pillar in their collection of IPs. Square is failing on every front, multi-plat is a good first step but they need to hire some people who know how to make combat fun, how to make exploration fun and then build their story/visuals around that instead of vice versa.

The only people I've seen saying positive things about its combat are people who compare it to other modern Final Fantasy games which is an incredibly low benchmark. No one's seriously defending it when you compare it to other ARPGs

Dude DD2 is a massive disappointment. It had better hype leading up to it, that's the only reason it sold well. It's a worse game compared to rebirth by a giant margin

I wouldn't call it a massive disappointment and it's certainly better than Rebirth. The combat and exploration is infinitely more fun and while the story is also a mess at least it's very open and doesn't bog you down with a lot of a huge amount of additional cutscenes that weren't in the original, it focuses on the gameplay and was a fun playthrough because of it

Subjective to a degree, that's fair but there's a reason why souls-like gameplay basically became the standard for action games and why there's so many spinoffs now, it's fundamentally good with a lot of room for variance
                >I don't like ARPG combats
This explains why you like what FF7R has, it's fine to enjoy it but it's still going to get compared to its peers

                Anonymous

I don't know anyone who played DD1 who found 2 to be a massive disappointment, maybe not as good as 1 but most people enjoyed it. The only people I see who didn't like 2 were people who had never played 1 and had mismatched expectations. The DD2 general was nothing but praise. Did you even play both games? Meanwhile no one has anything redeeming to say about Rebirths story, Chadley is still a horrific addition to the game. It's a big step up from Remake but still lackluster with the open world being absolutely awful compared to Elden Ring, TotK, Dogma etc. Putting stuff in VR missions instead of putting it all in the world is absolutely soulless. The praise I will give to Rebirth is that the characters do feel alive, same with remake, Yuffie is cuter than ever, Aerith is a likeable character but then they butcher characters like Dyne because they have to change everything good about the original

They also announced an across the board course correction highlighting that moving forward they´ll shift focus from quantity to quality and will go full multyplat. Fricking finally. With this plus the layoffs we may at least see them try to make good games for the first time in 20 years.

I do think it´s too late though. Most of the talented artists that ever worked for them are either too old to return or have long moved on and the same can be said about the loyal fanbase that supported them between the 80´s and the early 2000´s. They are also too old or have moved on. Tourists move with trends, can SE even survive without trying to appeal to them? Those consumers are all they have left...

SE should adopt what Nintendo has done. Put the story and the core gameplay concepts into a really simplified old school game and play it that way.

If it works, makes sense, is fun, and has good pacing that way. Then spend the money to bring it up to AA visual standards.
Basically just what they did with Trials of Mana, or Dragon Quest 11.
Do that with Final Fantasy 6, and give it some advertising.

        >That's because Nintendo has better management and seem to actually reward employees for remaining with the company.
The biggest difference is in consistency. Nintendo has been very successful for virtually their entire time in this industry. The only period they were ever failing was the Wii U until the switch, and even then it was just mediocre not bad. So if you are talented you'd like to work there since you know layoffs are unlikely.

I remember a story of someone who was a passionate developer and worked hard to build up a resume worthy of Nintendo, he applied, got the job and instantly developed an inferiority complex because everyone at Nintendo as so incredibly skilled while being equally passionate. They really do attract the industries best talent

Nintendo generally sticks with keeping their games similar and doesn't change the formula just to invalidate their core audience.

I would give them a lot more credit than that. BotW and TotK were big changes to the Zelda formula and people loved it. Nintendo does genuinely make good games

Sure for whatever reason they changed the formula but it proves they can can do change that formula at times and when they do it's largely extremely successful. Capcom managed to adjust to the modern era but Square is still behind

            >Capcom
So 2 failed online REs we are just going to ignore? We are also going to really test that with Dogma 2 selling hot then getting pretty panned as people played it and saw it runs dry quick. MH Wilds might have the same performance issues, and RE9 being open world could be disastrous.

Something I see no one talking about is S-E went from 70% of game sales being digital, to now 80% from 2023 to 2024 fiscal. Even Sony is 66%.

Ignore it in the same way we typically ignore all the smaller projects Square has like the LIVE A LIVE remake. Yes Capcom doesn't have a 100% success rate but at the same time all its major IPs Monhun, Resident Evil, Street Fighter and now Dragons Dogma are doing very well, exceptionally well as far as sales are concerned that the smaller budget risks like RE online failing doesn't impact the company in a significant way. You might be right, Wilds could have the same performance issues, RE9 could be a disaster but that's only potentially and given the reception to Dragons Dogma performance I don't think they will risk anything but exceptional levels of polish for what is now their biggest IP. While Dogma 2 got dogpiled for performance issues and hypocrtically the microtransactions the game was actually really good, flawed but still great and regardless, the sales were so strong they want to make Dragons Dogma a core IP now meaning that any future iteration should have a bigger budget with more polish. I'm not sure we can really compare Capcom to square with a straight face, Square could learn a lot from Capcom

There is definitely a difference between remaking an old game, a tiny IP at that, compared to trying RE Online like 3 different times post-Outbreak files. Plus one of those was glued to RE3 Remake to justify a 3 hour 60 dollar game.
                >the sales were so strong they want to make Dragons Dogma a core IP now meaning that any future iteration should have a bigger budget with more polish
ah yes after DMC5 did very well they definitely didn't give Itsuno enough money and time to cook. Surely this time he will make a game that doesn't reuse enemies the entire game even in different regions, and actually have new vocations and new skills that aren't reused.
There is a reason S-E is doubling down on the big projects, and cut 140m in losses of AA/smaller projects. Diofield, Valkyrie Elysium and the sort have no chance of hitting it big while they can recover their major IPs cause the pieces are all there just behind dumb business practices.

If there is something they will never be able to shake off, its the anime/weeb shit for FF. That immediately does hurt the potential audience if you don't lean into it hard enough where you just make it about dating teenagers ala Persona or Fire Emblem

Sure, you might be right that he won't be able to make DD3 any better but DD2 was still a fun game despite the flaws. The gameplay is enjoyable and the world fun to explore, certainly more so than Squares latest offerings with a significantly lower budget. I'm not sure if the anime/weeb shit is really that big of an issue, weeb shit is increasingly popular with anime being more popular than ever, vtubers being mainstream, gacha games being incredibly popular etc. But I wouldn't be opposed to FF7 part 3 letting you pick which girl to romance, the correct choice of course would be Yuffie

                >they can recover their major IPs cause the pieces are all there just behind dumb business practices.
Oh they absolutely can't, the problem is that the big ventures cost them way too much money that even dlc and mtx can't cover so they're going multiplat with it hoping that more people will buy instead of doing the smart thing in making smaller games and actually advertising them properly.
The problem is that PC, Nintendo and to a lesser extent Xbox players have something Sony players don't which will result in these big games continuing to fail.

I am not going to pretend to know the budget for either. The only thing we know of for sure about Rebirth is it took 3 years to make and they kept basically the same staff. So the much larger game than Remake was done very quickly, with one of the smoothest developments they've had.

Square development cycles are pretty smooth because they use the same development style as 14 unfortunately that smooth development cycle leads to a lot of repetitive and soulless elements like VR missions because the trello board basically says "3 end game bosses", "3 mini games" and whichever guy picks up that tickets shoves it in a lazy VR mission instead of crafting a section of the world for it like you would expect in an RPG
