Just played through the whole 3 hours in one sitting, it's really great.
I was originally planning on getting it for my Switch but the graphics are genuinely really pretty, I was pretty skeptical about the 3D environments from the trailers and screenshots but it looks great when you're playing it.
I don't really have any complaints except the combat is really fricking easy in the start, but when you get your party member and leave for the adventure it suddenly gets much, much harder.
Oh, usually I like vidya dubs but this one is just awful. Do yourself a favor and use Japanese voices, particularly the "SO2SE" option.

Whoops, meant
>I was originally planning on getting it for my Switch but the graphics are genuinely really pretty, I'll probably get it on PC instead since Switch will most likely look worse.
Also forgot to mention that the portraits are animated which I wasn't expecting, they look really nice.
These portraits are infinitely superior to the godawful versions we got for earlier remake. They look slightly less colorful than the original, but are far more detailed.
They didn't even try with the PSP art. Was the artist some in-house intern nobody?
>Game lets you switch portraits
>Doesn't let you use Anamnesis portraits
>Doesn't have new portraits by the manga artist
Disappointed
Which is your favourite Rena?
They are all special and lovely but I'm a fan of the original and the 2023 remake. Only gripe with the 2023 remake is the socks aren't as good as the anamnesis version. The ears are simply terrible in the 2008 remake, but they nailed the angle, shape and sharpness in 2023.
>Which is your favourite Rena?
OG, always and forever, though that "Ananmnesis" or w/e looks good too (wtf even is that? A manga or some shit?), and the upcoming remake is also based.
But you just can't top Portrait B of the original!
Anamnesis was a gacha game that's shut down.
What a bawd

SO7 should be set in the 7th century
That's assuming we get another game. Didn't 6 flopped?
>Didn't 6 flopped?
AFAIK it's performance on consoles was dogshit and it's performance on steam was relatively good.
So it flopped. Shit.
You're gonna buy three copies of so2r though, right anon? We need to keep them funded so we can have star ocean remakes in vr in the 2030s.
SO2r and SODF are precursors to the long awaited Hrist game.
I preordered SO2R on PS5 and then decided to build a gaming PC so I preordered it on Steam as well. Maybe I should just grab it on Switch as well and complete the circle.
>and it's performance on steam was relatively good.
The PC performance of 6 was awful. If you go through the Steam reviews you'll see a ton of people complaining about how dog shit the PC port is.
It’s still somehow worse on consoles. The PS4 port on performance mode can’t even hit a consistent 30. There are some places where you don’t even get 1FPS.
OG and Ananmnesis are the only ones with proper attitude. 2008 remake is an abomination.
Best looking HD2D game, except for the world map.
It's weird to call it HD-2D since it's literally all 3D except for the character models
I don't think the devs even consider it HD-2D, just regular 2.5D.
Nah, not even close. The sprites all look like they have downs, and the backgrounds look like Unreal asset flips.
>Best looking HD2D game
Is this a joke? This game does exactly everything wrong and doubles down on all the mistakes Octopath did.
And then they decided to crank up the bloom by 500%.
Even WHEN other games like LiveALive uses bloom, it doesn't go as overboard as SO2R. Like holy frick, look at OP where Rena is borderline white WHILE IN SHADOW.
The characters also don't look like they belong in the game world in SO2R, because they use too realistic shapes and textures for the environment, while leaving the original sprites for the characters pixelated and untouched.
SO2R is fricking ugly.
I'm skeptical, but since there's a demo I'll try this.
I always have a bad time with Star Ocean, because I start doubting my recruitment choices, then decide to play the game all over again while not having fun, just to regret my new party again.
it's funny how Rena's wink is supposed to be a cute pose but with the awful lighting it makes it look like she's being blinding by a spotlight
lol, even backlit she looks washed out. dynamic lighting + sprites was a mistake.
I have a question for pixelgays. Is it not possible to have a pixel to be more than one color, ie have a diagonal line from the top right corner to the bottom left corner and have both sides be different colors instead of having the full square be one color? I feel like this is something that should have a solution to by now.
A pixel by definition is the smallest thing a computer can display, so no. However nothing stops a game or artist from having the sprites scaled to a larger size where such a thing can be emulated. Rena's sprite in that image is scaled up by 500% for example, which allows for the lighting to have more granularity than her.
As a rule though dynamic lighting works poorly on sprites unless they have huge amounts of detail. Most games with pixel graphics rely on blend modes or palette changes to simulate lighting effects.
They also go for dithering to mask the "jaggedness" that comes with them.
The first anon who replied is too autistic to understand your question. He's technically correct, but only for actual pixels rendered at 1x native resolution. Once you start rendering the original pixel art at 2x or higher, each pixel becomes an array of pixels, at which point you can easily render each array as you described, with gradients, or with anything else you can fit into each array. Countless shaders for retro game emulators have already employed similar techniques for decades.
MY STRENGTH IS STARTING TO OVERFLOW!!!
Really not a fan of this take on the aesthetic, they look like paper cut outs.
>he doesn't like Paper Mario.
Paper Mario has a unified aesthetic based around that though. This just looks lazy.
I think it just looks different.
They got the person with the weirdest and most incompetent androgynous speech to do the VO for their english gameplay trailer
Was thinking the same thing
>Do yourself a favor and use Japanese voices, particularly the "SO2SE" option.
I remember not thinking much of the Jap voices in the PSP version, but they do seem more fitting than the Jap PSX voices in this remake. PSX Claude sounds way too high-pitched and whiny while Rena sounds the opposite, the SE voices feel like a better fit for both of them. Didn't end up listening to Celine's PSX voice though.
But yeah the English dub is fricking awful.
But yeah the remake is fricking fantastic from the demo, my only concern is if IC is less exploitable now, but this definitely seems like it'll be the definitive version of the game. The new combat is a huge improvement even if not having jump attacks still sucks. Fricking weird how they gave the magic-related battle skills to non-magic users though. And Godspeed still has the random teleport function which can't be separated from the speed boost function which sucks.
It looks so bad.
Is it still the dub using spike spencer as claud? I didnt mind that dub
">Modern backgrounds but jarring sprites"
Unless there's new gameplay, why did they even bother?
Well there is lots of new mechanics.
>Unless there's new gameplay
It's a remake, not a remaster. Everything is "new."
Do the Pc and PS5 versions really look noticeably better than switch?
There is demo for all systems so you can check for free.
I don’t really care that much about the graphics but how much better is the gameplay when it’s 60-144HZ against the switch’s framerate which is probably in the 20-30’s? Kinda want to play this on my bed but I don’t want a bad experience
It is in all seriousness the same exact game for the 4th time but with GRAPHICS. Would rather just have a remake of 3.
>It is in all seriousness the same exact game for the 4th time, please ignore that they reworked every single gameplay system the game had, and also there wasn't even a third time
That can work for games like the new Tomb Raider collection where it's purely aesthetics but it's impossible here where the entire game has been reworked, you can't just swap out fully 3D environments for pre-rendered backgrounds with fixed cameras and different loading zones.
SE has 2 versions it is the 4th.
The PS4 version is a straight port and never advertised itself as anything more than that, unlike First Departure R which at least replaced the godawful PSP art.
I watched a Japanese streamer play that version, because of Rena's skin tone being significantly pinker than normal he called her "Pigface".
>godawful PSP art
First departure looks best on the psp
And i couldn't even play 2 on it because they opted for leaving boring og snes slop graphics
>you can't just swap out fully 3D environments for pre-rendered backgrounds with fixed cameras and different loading zones.
I just mean rendering quality. Have a low res version and a high res version.
If this becomes a financial success, then they'll definitely think about a third remake.
3 is absurdly long and has a lot of content. IIRC it was split across 2 DVDs which was almost unheard of in the PS2-era.
tbh it might be too expensive for them to even consider
Besides Star Ocean 3, there were a handful of other multidisc PS2 RPGs. Xenosaga 2, Xenosaga 3, Grandia 3, Shadow Hearts 2.
This looks hideous. Octopath and its consequences
I don't get why games don't do what Lunistice did - have a retro vs. hd toggle for backgrounds/lightning. It would cost maybe ten man hours extra and would please a lot more people.
This.
Frick Square enix and their slop consuming idiot fans.
So some Japanese autist got the marvel sword unlocked, I assume it's by challenges and a bunch of other shit. Anyone have details?
you could always do this through crafting either a treasure card or a treasure chest and spam reload until it drops. good to know they've kept the SOVL intact.
I only ever played like 4 hours of Star Ocean 2 back in the day and I can't remember jack about it
Is it good? I don't mind tossing Tri-Ace a few bucks
Black person just download and try the demo. But yes
i only ever played the ps1 version and can't get used to the psp voices and don't want to play in nipponese either
And to think, Xenogears is getting this next year.
It isn't.
It is
Unironically xenogears backgrounds can't get uglier
The sprites are cute. If I'm not mistaken, they are more detailed than the PSX original.
What's with the ugly 3d backgrounds though? The devs like woah there, can't be having the 2d games you actually want.
>If I'm not mistaken, they are more detailed than the PSX original.
Yeah, they added new animations that weren't in the previous versions.
>can't be having the 2d games you actually want.
The backgrounds were always 3D renders.
I wonder if Dias will actually get a few private actions this time around.
I loved this game as a kid. The remake feels great. I just select the original music and turn voices all the way down and it's nearly perfect.
it looks similar to the psp version,it would have been better to do a remake instead.
for example it would have been better if sprites and animations got remade in HD style.
It is a remake
are you sure?
>not HD sprites
>not remade on full 3D.
it qualifies as remaster only (you can just put the HD textures on ppsspp and will be similar)
>if the game doesn't change the character sprites it's not a remake, it doesn't matter that it changed literally everything that isn't the character sprites
Why do you feel qualified to talk about something you've very clearly never played either version of?
Are you legitimately moronic? EVERYTHING was remade from the ground up. Even the sprites where recreated. It's a remake.
Is the writing become better in the future? I really thought that some middle schooler wrote those ass-dialogs
I absolutely loved this demo and can’t wait for the full game. Honestly enjoyed it way more than Sea of Stars
>A lot of people on Reddit hated the demo
s it going to be good?
>get 1 benefaction card
I'm going in bros. I'm gonna reset for a marvel sword
Well that was fricking quick
This gives me hope that the game is still as easily breakable as the original.
Being overpowered gets so boring in SO games, it is the whole reason post game dungeons are the only semi difficult thing.
Being overpowered is essential early on for higher difficulties which you obviously have not played.
Been rolling a lot from the Goodie Box and got a few screens. This one is fricking stupid but idk who it belongs too. Rena and Claude can't equip it
Celine and Chisato can equip earrings, not sure if Opera could.
I played the demo for one hour. I can't get over the fricking sprites. Come on, what is this shit?
A shame, otherwise it'd be day1 purchase from me.
Yeah they look like paper cut outs.
Filtered, go queue up another Fortnite game, zoomie.
>m-must be a zoomie!
lmao
seethe harder, dumbass, your fav game looks like shit
I'm gonna find where you live homosexual and then I'll gonna break in your house and take a big shit in all your movie reddit games and before I go, I'm gonna gift you a free copy of Star Ocean 2 The Second Story R on PS4, because I'm not a monster
HD2D style really wigs my autism out and it's no thanks to the lighting and hyper realistic environments that it looks like you're playing an interactive diorama. It's just uncanny. An anon several threads ago put it best that it wouldn't look so bad if they sprites were a little more detailed instead of full-on chibi, like Tales of Destiny Directors Cut. Even Eiyuden Chronicles' sprites look pretty damn good with said lighting.
The screenshot didn't really do that justice compared to watching it on Youtube, trust me.
Sorry man, these are the rules, I don't make them. You don't get 2d sprites unless they are SNES tier. And you WILL take the stock Unity asset backgrounds with them.
>Sorry man, these are the rules, I don't make them.
Who the FRICK are YOU anyway?!
>it wouldn't look so bad if they sprites were a little more detailed instead of full-on chibi
This.
It's not that they're sprites, it's that they're like 42x42 sprites with way too little detail.
Something like the sprites of Tales of Destiny would from PS2 work well here, god forbid companies from thinking that they can use better type of sprites and not the snes shit all the time
The different types of graphics clash too much. The sprites and environments clash, but so do the portraits and UI all clash with each other.
omg that enviroment is just so realistic but the sprites clash so hard kek
Tell me that portrait isn't in game because it is 100 percent an AI drawing.
>artwork is godlike
>3D backgrounds are gorgeous
>ps1 sprites
why
if this is an actual remake does that mean party members will have more than like 5 PAs each?
Probably not since the the audio is mostly recycled from the PSP version (Japanese track 1 and English dub). Only the second Japanese track is a new recording. I doubt that they will add in new lines that would end up unvoiced in 2/3 of the audio options.
Tried the demo earlier today. Was 'mirin the new environments too much at first and ran out of time before getting to the cave bossfight. Some areas were a hit or miss for me though. I can't explain it but the 3d environment actually makes the towns feel smaller to me? Or maybe that's just my nostalgia remembering the original being this vast game. Anyway, the battles are really fun and snappy even on switch so far, so i'm already gonna get it just for that.
>I can't explain it but the 3d environment actually makes the towns feel smaller to me?
It depends on the town. Arlia and the mining town are basically 1:1 with how they were before so they're fine, but Krosse is totally fricked. The original game had lots of loading screens separating areas which makes it feel much bigger as there are obvious disconnects between loaded areas (compared to the preceding two towns where the different loading zones obviously directly connect at the edges), whereas in the remake the entire city of Krosse is connected with no zones outside of the castle, which makes it feel incredibly small by comparison as it's basically just two squares and a few houses. You can see more stuff in the background but when the whole area is explorable and there are no paths to the rest of the city it hurts the illusion.
That explains everything about the towns feeling smaller yeah. I think even Arlia felt a bit cramped to me (the single shop being a stall now but I remember it having an interior) but Krosse especially like you described. Even the dome at the very start felt cut off because they just walked straight to the teleporter rather than have Claude run an extra loading screen or two before getting there. I hope the other larger towns/areas don't suffer the same fate. That's sort of been my only gripe so far, at least. It's a nitpick at best unless it gets a lot more noticeable later.
Less load times are an improvement, not a flaw. A city feeling big because of loading times is rose tinted nostalgia, not a feature for the game.
I for one like hd2d and I'm glad it seems hear to stay :3. Finally an budget friendly alternative for jrpg devs besides just making handheld games
Disregard that, I suck wieners
Dicks everywhere :3
>Star Ocean 2 Remaster
Why do zoomers not know the difference between a remake and a remaster?
Game got a soul upgrade by including all the previous character portraits and improving the sprites (idle animations, look at her). Anyone complaining about the dub didn't play the original, which was famously bad. As far as I can tell from the demo, they did an awesome job.
>Anyone complaining about the dub didn't play the original, which was famously bad.
The PSX dub was so bad it's good. The PSP dub is just bad.
Okay now that's bullshit. The psp dub isn't bad. Well...maybe Ashton is. But the PSX was just borderline shit that people somehow cope into thinking it's bad good because nostalgia
>The psp dub isn't bad.
The PSP dub was fricking awful you delusional moron. And unlike the PSX version you didn't only need to suffer through it in battles, you had to suffer through it throughout all the cutscenes too.
>But the PSX was just borderline shit
No, it was pure shit, but a laughably bad dub giving us gems like PEAR INTO PEACHES is much better than a dub that tries to take itself seriously but fails because it's full of shitty VAs who can only do one voice, hence why Claude now sounds exactly the same as dub Shinji Ikari.
I played the PSX version on mute. The dub was just that bad.
Holy fricking soulless slop.
My wife Rena is still cute after all these years.
our wife Rena
based. also that text seems like something i may have literally said verbatim, somewhere on the internet, 10~ish years ago
Renachads are rare but unusually dedicated. For a 20 year old game I suppose that makes sense. It probably was you, I didn't make the image though.
>dub
I immediately switched to japanese when playing the demo. Second Evolution voices seemed better than the Remake.
Not sure how since it's the exact same voice clips. On the PSP it sounds a bit muffled because of poor audio quality which is fixed on the remake making them natural and clear and not boxy
The Japanese, you dumbass.
It's still the same thing you wiener munching, semen swallowing, ass fricked, double Black person loving homosexual. And then there's the need japanese dub from the PSX cast. Which is indeed different for obvious reasons.
You absolute moron, the PSX actors dub is the new one, it's listed in the settings as the remake voice track.
>was famously bad.
More "endearingly bad"
Like they were bad but I heard them when I was a teenager when the game first released so they have a special place despite being rubbish.
Anyways I liked the remake for the most part. I think my biggest complaint are that the sprites are extremely crunchy. but I can get over that.
The interconnectivity of the maps felt good, spells not freezing felt good (but I always disabled casting of freeze spells anyways so it's not that much of a difference for me)
The new combat flow feels really nice. Which is good because I was skeptical after I saw they were adding a nonsense break system into it. Special Arts rebalancing its pretty neat as it means Ernest might not be complete dogshit anymore and Welch will be more than just spamming normal attacks.
There's still a character limit right? I'm trying to figure who I take with me on my first playthrough.
Probably Claude, Rena, Leon, Ashton, Precis, Opera, Ernest, and Chisato. Or maybe I'll just ignore Ernest and that entire questline and take either Celine or Welch. Welch kinda sucks though.
>Ashton, Opera
Anon...
Oh wait that's right. Sorry it's been like 2 years since my last playthrough and I always do that.
Claude, Rena, Leon, Ashton, Precis, Celine, Welch, Chisato
Though maybe Noel is cooler in this remake and I can finally start adding him. Wouldn't that be something
>Claude, Rena, Leon, Ashton, Precis, Celine, Welch, Chisato
Sounds good. I'll be choosing Claude and recruiting Rena, Celine, Precis, Opera, Chisato, Welch, and no other characters.
The aryan chad stumbles his way into a harem of cute aliens and maybe saves the world by accident.
At least pickup Leon, he's a good boy
>and no other characters.
i think you've got room for one more :^)
Lawkey he got buffed considerably on the new remake. Dude now has hits foe days + status ailments
I'm currently playing the psp version. Went with Claude, Rena, Celine, Bowman, Leon, Opera, Ernest and Chisato.
Think in the remake I'll go Rena, Claude,Dias, Celine, Precis/Bowman (I just like Bowman so this is the hardest choice for me), Ashton, Noel and either Chisato or Welch.
All the remakes in the world could never make that insufferable toddler Precis redeemable. Bowman for life.
Young me thought Precis gadgets were the coolest shit ever. Adult me still thinks they're the coolest shit ever. I think I still have used Bowman about half of my playthroughs though. Variety is the spice of life. Ernest typically gets left to explode. Chisato is the character I'm typically most likely to forget to recruit and get stuck with Noel instead.
Ashton probably my favorite character in the game but good lord did most of his special arts suck. Not this time.
Precis is thinking with your dick as a teenager. Bowman is for the refined gentleman that occasionally gets high.
Teens wanted little kids to frick? I don't believe you.
She's not a kid, she's a teenager. Second best girl too.
No, but I wanted to frick her when I was a teenager playing her. These days, I appreciate Chisato more.
>Anyone complaining about the dub didn't play the original, which was famously bad.
Shit is still shit even when compared to worse shit
Shit homie, that’s kawaii
Right? Very rarely do remakes actually add to the charm of the original.
why is it so fricking bright it genuinely hurts to look at. also that stupid fricking bloom.
>anon has never been outside on a sunny day
Its genuinely too bright
Nah it looks great both day and night.
>anon has never been outside on a sunny day
I did once, and it was horrible.
So should I just go for the OG then? Never got to start this entry and don't want to mar my experience with a remake that changes too much.
>It's another episode of chronically online homosexuals looking for the stupidest shit to complain about
The complaints are valid for anyone who has taste.
's webm is a great example. Look how many levels of graphical detail are present in just this one shot.
>super low res character sprites
>low resolution grass/flower sprites moving in 3D; ugly tearing occurs when the grass's transformation crosses certain thresholds
>early PS3 level of detail on the actual textures, shadow, lighting, bloom
Now add in the modern high-resolution fonts that clash with all of the above whenever they appear, the high-resolution character portraits that look out of place on top of everything when they pop in, the menu/interface that looks like it might as well be from an entirely different, more modern game...
Nothing looks like it belongs in 1 specific game here, yet it's all mashed together lazily.
NTA, but do you just want them to use RPGmaker style assets and call it a day?
>complaints from here
>valid
Never has it been the case
Either way, the BIG mistake that all indie pixel shitters AND AAA HD2D games+"pixel remasters" make time and again is failing to keep everything at one unified level of detail. The more you attempt to lean into a particular style and its level of pixel detail, the more jarring it is when you introduce elements that don't mesh with the rest. You immediately waste all the effort you put into gorgeous pixel graphics when you start adding
>elements that aren't 2D/pixel like fog effects, 3D lighting/bloom, fonts and interface elements that don't match everything else, etc
>animations that rely on transformation loops rather than animating them manually
>3D effects that are too many "steps" above the pixel graphics in terms of detail; 2D sprites x 3D backgrounds isn't always terrible, but it becomes worse and worse the greater the difference there is in detail/resolution between the sprites and the 3D elements
These are the most common and most basic things people frick up. You draw attention to anything that stands out in a bad way and devalue any work that went into the rest of the project.
The original was also different levels of detail. The character sprites always looked out of place in the weird pre-rendered early 3D environments, see image. We liked it like that. This change in style for the remake isn't really that much of a leap, nor does it look terrible.
Sorry anon, but you appear to have missed the most important part of the post which said
>2D sprites x 3D backgrounds isn't always terrible, but it becomes worse and worse the greater the difference there is in detail/resolution between the sprites and the 3D elements
And the difference was far, far less in the original PS1 game. An order of magnitude less.
Play the OG with HD filters and anti aliasing and you'll see the pig behind that blurry makeup.
this, it only worked because everything was low resolution, which they can't really do with a modern remake. You just know people would be foaming at the mouth if SE changed the OG sprites in any way. There's really no good way to update the visuals without SOMEONE throwing a b***hfit.
>There's really no good way to update the visuals without SOMEONE throwing a b***hfit.
Should've just made it look good if someone's always going to be upset then.
I am of the opinion that it looks good. Some people are not. Point proven.
And some people are of the opinion that Hitler did nothing wrong.
It's not that their opinion isn't legitimate, it's that they're a bad person.
Game looks bad.
>you're a bad person if you have different political views than me
Frick off moron.
People like you help ruin this site.
You're going to take this post the wrong way too, but people like you can't really help yourselves.
I bet you can afford to eat. Alt-right chuds can afford to eat and so did a guy named, oh idk -- HITLER?! HMMMMMM...
Wasn't going to reply, but here's a (YOU) to check 'em.
Shitposting aside, I fricking LOVED Little Critters growing up. Great series of books. Good taste, anon.
Not everyone can be klaus schwab, but sometimes i wish i could share his world ending farytales.
Double down coward. You concession was a waste.
Has anyone found a way to make low res pixel art look less jarring against HD backgrounds? I think maybe having big obvious pixels in the middle of the sprite but with blurring near an HD outline would scare normalgays less
>go play the original in unrealistic conditions
Nah, frick you, but I accept your concession anyway.
>Couldn't provide an argument.
>Demands I lose.
Not how it works, fricko.
My argument was always
>(art style) looked better on old hardware because the gap between the sprites and 3D graphics wasn't as wide
And you never presented a valid argument against it. And no, asking for me to put on the LOOKIN' GOOD™ filters does not count as an argument.
You're not even aware at how much devs expressed regret about hardware limitations that make them go through great lengths to cut and compromise their intended vision, but you're going to simply handwave that because you have the bad case of nostalgiagayging.
>ackshually I prefer it in nearsight clarity. It's authentic.
Fricking ridiculous clown.
Oh, I'm sure this slop of fake pixels, fake 3D sprites, and modern lighting was totally part of their original vision for the game.
It could very well be and you can do nothing, but cry.
It's pretty obvious people who actually liked the original (if not much of the original staff themselves) worked on this one. It's not a case of "dump this on the diversity hire's desk, our customers will buy whatever we shit out". Rotate through the character portraits on the status screen and tell me every effort wasn't made to preserve the soul of the original.
But thats not what anon is talking about,he is purely talking about asthetics, even if they had a X vision for the game doesn't mean it will look good when put in practice, to a degree the hardware limitation made the disconnection between the character sprites and the enviroment to be less
>if not much of the original staff themselves
Gemdrops was founded by a guy whose only work on SO was programming for SO3. I'm fairly confident that's the only connection the studio has with tri-Ace.
>Make shitty changes to the OG and it'll look shitty!
HOLY SHIT HE'S RIGHT
It looked shit then and it look shit now. There's no winning when it comes to jaded fricks like itt.
>There's no winning when it comes to jaded fricks like itt.
The only winning move is to stop remaking/mastering shit and make new games instead.
There hasn't been a new IP that is good since 2015 hence the remakes.
Sorry zoomer, but youre wrong. During that time it was definitely jarring to have cartoon 2D sprites on realistic (at the time) prerendered 3D backgrounds. That was part of the charm though. 2DHD is the next natural step and fits it perfectly.
If you wanted yesmanning and hype about mediocre nostalgia bait then maybe you should have posted your thread to reddit instead of here.
runs perfect on yuzu, why even buy it?
Is it 60fps on yuzu or does the game just run 30fps on the switch in general?
Played 2 hours of demo on switch so far. It’s good. The characters are great, the voice acting in the game sounds wonderful, the visuals are really pretty, the sprites give everything soul.
The combat seems fun once you progress more. Only complaints so far are 1.) The combat is too easy on Galaxy difficulty. I’m looking forward to a difficulty spike. 2.) Loading a battle encounter and exiting doors feels a little longer than I would like. Maybe this is just a switch issue.
I can tell I will like the game better than The Divine Force, the only other Star Ocean I’ve beaten.
>demo on switch
its the full game you can unlock it on the yuzu emulatinon
Anyone streaming this if true? Also how full is it? Since the file size is like a 10th of the full game
and yet you have no source
how's the difficulty? i'm sick of braindead easy JRPGs
Normal or “Galaxy” mode seems too easy so far. Universe difficulty could step it up, but might also add grind and time to a playthrough. Pick your poison. I guess I’m sticking with Normal. I played The Divine Force on hardest difficulty and it doesn’t feel like it added much to my playthrough. Parts were still too easy, while difficulty spikes were still difficulty spikes.
I hope with this they try their hand in remaking Star Ocean EX. Now THAT needs rework.
Why would they remake the anime? Unless you meant Blue Sphere?
Blue sphere was such a good fricking game. A 3d remake would be kino
Nah they should remake EX
If they actually finished it instead of stopping right when the story gets amazing I would be satisfied.
so they made Ernest good this time, right
It's possible since now we can do some frickery with the gear and some of his skills got extra hit as a buff or better AoE. Celine alone is now far better and has more multihit attacks.
Why didn't they remake it like final fantasy 7 remake? Now its like a perfect copy into a 3D world, why not reamgining things complettley just like final fantasy 7 remake?
>Implying modern Sqeenix has the money to blow on niche JRPGs for lenghty projects
Reminder 14 is there only cash cow keeping them afloat and 16 sunk them.
I don't know man what you talk about but all i know is that the remake of final fantasy 7 remake was something you would expect from a remake, and if you want something exactley as it was it should be called COPY.
So yes, this star ocean remake is actually a Star Ocean COPY. Look, i am not bullshitting you here, think about the following example: Mario.
Now what did they call the next game of mario when shit went into 3D?
Mario 64.
It wasn't the 64 game of it, and i know you know that exactly. This star ocean is basiclley this, a star ocean 64. It is not a remake. Its a copy into 3D
>Trauma dumping
This is a Star Ocean thread, not a therapy session. Don't be that guy.
>It wasn't the 64 game of it
Pretentious brainlet garbage.
It's Mario in 64-bits, hence the acronym "64" in the title. Not an RPG btw.
>It's Mario in 64-bits, hence the acronym "64" in the title. Not an RPG btw.
thats what i mean, no think again about star ocean remake now, its simply a restoration into 3D. Its not a remake.
I don't care what you think it is or isn't. My point was modern Squeenix is gay and dumb and moronic and financially irresponsible trend chasers who don't have the complicity, let alone money, to spend on such huge projects akin to 7R. Again: Don't be that guy. Stop making this about you and your grievances.
grievances you say? making it about me you say?
As far as i can tell, the only one trying to make this about me is you, the second time now.
I just typed down some truth based on real world pyhsics and laws by nature. I don't see how this can be about me?
Or do we call old beatles music pressed on a dvd a remamke too?
>"Why couldn't they remake (x)?"
>Because irresponsible spending habits.
>"BAAAAWWWW I WANT A REMAKE OF (x) WHY IS (y) CALLED A REMAKE AND NOT A REAL REMAKE WAAAHHH"
God shut up...
The dumbest post in this thread
When you can't be the best, be the worst.
>16 sunk them.
16 met expectations, it just couldn't offset the losses from Flopspoken and the western capeshit games.
>16 met expectations
You can cope with that all you want. It sunk them.
time for another merger
Making it PS5 exclusive was definitely one of the worst decisions nu-SE has ever made.
Babylon's Fall existing is still the top when it comes to Squenix's bonehead ideas.
You mean approving it. It was pitched by platinum.
And one last thing, in final fantasy 7 remake;
The term REAMKE wasn't a subtitle of the games title, it was actually part of the title.
For me, it's Precis. But the face on her new art looks terrible.
How's Switch's frame rate? Does it defecate itself when there's too many effects going on or is it smooth as diarrhea for the most part?
I hated the PS1 and PSP versions of this game. The randomized talents are a dumb idea. The abstruse quests are poorly designed and unrewarding. Having mutually exclusive character means you gotta replay the game, which requires retreading the same boring-ass dungeons and mindless boss fights multiple times over.
tri-Ace just can't design good video games to save their lives. No wonder Namco kicked all those people off of Wolf Team.
Your mind does not function correctly.
My main issues were combat related. Normal attacks felt pretty useless, more so in the original. Besides that, magic was annoying as frick. Around the midgame, spells get more and more intrusive. You’re in the middle of a fight and a spell goes off, and you’re waiting. Then you’re in the fight again, but there’s another spell. It’s so obnoxious. At least they’re finally fixing that.
Then you weren't abusing crafting/equipment system as you should have. Normal attacks are far and away the best in original SO1 to the point it's all claude uses after you use helmbreaker to where it gets it's flip animation and becomes worthless, and claude is by far the most damage per second of any character in the game (well technically ashton has him beat doing the same thing in ps1 so2).
I was doing a normal playthrough and didn't care to abuse stuff. I mainly remember stuff like the jump normal for aerial enemies, which either whiffed and left you open, you were under them and would whiff too, or the side step version of the normal slash which seemed sort of inconsistent to get. I mainly just mashed Helm Splitter until it sucked. Final boss I just cheesed with Precis roboballs because I couldn't be assed at that point, I just wanted to get it over with.
Yeah see for SO2 it's really character dependent if you want to use basic vs km, With the two basic attack fighters far FAR outdamaging their km moves output even if it doesn't look like they do. All the swordies KMs have atrocious endlag that 1-2-3 combo of psp or 1-1-1 that ps1 has. It essentially goes:
Basic attacks: Claude, Ashton
KM spam: In order of most effective Chisato, Bowman, Opera, Precis, Welch (psp only).
Spell casters: Until now this didn't matter but my understanding is leon had best spell properties. Rest
The ps1 version of star ocean 2 is the original release anon
Yeah... what does that have to do with anything? I was naming the versions I've played.
With all the talk of remakes I think it's good to establish what was original
So has anyone datamined the demo to see if we can learn any more new stuff?
Blue Sphere fricking when?
Either you use the English translation for the GBC or never ever
Better buy the game anon 🙂
Clickbait bullshit. They're asking a contracted developer something that only Square Enix can actually decide.
isn't this already released on switch as Star Ocean 2nd Story R.
why use the demo just get it.
You're thinking of First Departure R.
>game gets datamined with cheat engine
>there's new more powerful ultimate weapons and other shit
>damage limit break
Boys, it's time
is welch any good
i never played the psp version
She pretty middle ground. No bad but not great. But the dataminer also mentioned that A LOT of the skills has been changed like energy sword/sword if life now doing damage + heal, Bowman secret medicine now having AoE heal around himself, ect
Am I the only one that misses the 3D models? It seemed more immersive for some reason. Now the item image look so tiny too.
Those are 3D models, just a lot more modern and cleaner.
Are you missing the point on purpose?
An actual bawd weapon is amazing.
Oh and the biggest news of all this. Claude Phase Gun gets finally fixed.
Frick didn't spoiler the image. FRICK
it's jail time for you
>Crawd
Does this basically confirm that the game is edited MTL?
90% of English TLs are.
In a lot of the official JP materials he was named Crawd when they romanized his name. One of his victory lines in the original English even says "Crawd has advanced forward"
Not even "was", still is. Crawd was probably supposed to be his name but whoever localized it told them that sounds silly so it became Claude only for English speakers.
>only 3 hits
dropped
So its just like Blue Sphere then.
>phase gun enabled becomes stronger
>it becomes a multi hit attack on upgrade
Skills have been datamine, all of them minus spells.

>Play psx version on duckstation
I replayed my copy of the PS1 version on my old PS2 earlier this year.
The demo for this remake was fun, so I'm planning to buy it on release. I like the updates they've made to the combat. Also being able to see friendship levels in the menu means I might actually be able to get the Reunion ending, which is usually a total crapshoot.
I'm sure they're using the more recent name transliterations for the Ten Wise Men, which is a drag. "Indalecio" is way cooler than "Gabriel".
The combat is actually fun , I tough they would frick it.
And usually break bar are a pain in the ass to program, like some games like Kitase's FF or Caligula 2 worked but others like Ys9 or FF15 make the combat worse.
Ignore him, he is a communistroon, a Sakaguchischizo that go to every Squarenix thread or both
How important is 60 fps for this? Not sure if I should pick it up on switch or pc. Does the SSD make a massive difference in entering and exiting battles?
>Does the SSD make a massive difference in entering and exiting battles?
I played the demo on PC, and it takes about 1 second to load into or out of a battle.
I found a playthrough of the demo on a Switch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpK5yMM7zOw) and at 59:30 it looks like it takes around 4 seconds to load a battle.
Thanks! I can probably live with that but I'll probably wait for reviews just to see the performance on the switch during the more hectic battles. The reveal trailer on the switch during what seemed like the latter half of the game was chugging when there were moves with big effects.
>Nibelungaling
>upgrade has more hits once
Wait, was this move multi hit before or are they actually gonna make the move closer to the VP game where it follows with n extra Burts?
">I'll check out this demo longplay and see what the game is like... oh wow the voice acting is nice... skip around the video... 1 hour and no combat, no menu screen, just talking."
I'm out.
>being filtered this hard
Anon, it takes 30 to 40 minutes of story before you get to the overworld and the action opens up. From there is more action and some story progression for more action.
heres a better one
>I'm not trying to nitpick
>proceed to nitpick about EVERYTHING and b***hing over the stupidest shit
What a colossal homosexual
he later corrects himself by saying he is trying to nitpick
its. SO. BORING!
just found out they changed Bobot to Robbie in the psp version
for me, it's Pericci
Who wrote these? Welch? Ronyx?
My bet is on Welch since she's a 4th dimensional being. Could be writing all this shit since she's a filthy fujo too.
neat.webp
Oh my. What assist is that. Who is that.
Laeticia
also who are the rest of these mystery homies besides the obvious Raymundo
Oh my. I thought it just "looked" like her. I didn't think they'd actually just use them for assists.
That's neat.
Anyways top right is probably Fate
No clue about the others. Id just be pissing into the wind. Bottom left's bangs are too out of control for that to be Roddick
Edge is definitely bottom right and Fidel has to be one of the other two.
>all those swords
>JUST SO characters
>Lenneth from VP is kill
I am the big sad
Aw c'mon, where's my homie?
This dude single-handedly mogged the last boss.
From datamining, it's all the SO mcs.
What datamine?
The demo got datamined.
I have absolutely zero recollection of any game in the series besides SO2 so this is reverse fanservice
Any chance they'll add Blue Sphere as DLC? It's not that long of a game right?
The game is too mechanically different compared to SO2.
It is. They should make a remake of it in the style of SO1 and 2 but try to modified it so the combat stay relatively the same as the GB one
The uniqueness is what makes BS special even if some parts are really dumb like the ability to brick characters.
Second Story ps1gay here, couple quick questions:
Having never played the psp version, does recruiting Welsh lock me out of any other characters? Are there any remake exclusive characters that we know of? And can someone spoonfeed me the way to get all 13 characters on two runs, since I've never tried before.
8 party limit size,
No,
Google it you lazy Black person
Kys and thanks b***h
might go for a completely different party set instead of the ones i picked in the past. how is bowman, ernest and noel? i've always ignored them because i honestly found them kind of boring design-wise.
>might go for a completely different party set instead of the ones i picked in the past. how is bowman, ernest and noel? i've always ignored them because i honestly found them kind of boring design-wise.
They were trash on the original but now they may be absolute units on this remake, so go for them. Magic casters are now much stronger and have even more multi hit spells
Ernest was bad and Noel is Mage/10 but Bowman was never bad in the original. You can just spam Poison Pills and be done with it.
From what little we know (if you count knowing the changes to all of the special arts as "little) Bowman probably more of a unit, Ernest might be legitimately useable, and Noel got the general mage glowup that all the other mages got.
TGS gameplay. Spells are fricking wild for sure
?si=3nVWhDsUB3Ru8bZG
Oh. I wasn't aware it'd even be at TGS. That's pretty sick
all i learned from this is that nipponese Opera has a really annoying voice
That's the OG voice actress from the PSX version. The PSP one sounds a lot different
Absolutely incredible. I must survive two more months. I have to experience this.
also lol @ VeghEsther in the comments there, or at least someone larping as him. I'm sure at least a few people on here know about that absolute legend.
I am so happy other people remember Vegh. Bloody Armor status?
Bloody Armor? On
Indalecio? Limiter off
Earth mode? Active
9999 damage? Not taken
It's Veghesther time.
I don't know that guy at all but I in fact used the bloody armor to cheese my way through the cave of trials and the trumpet boss as well. Saved myself hours of my life from getting gameovers in the deepest floors
It's pretty much a turbo autists that has been schizo posting the same shit for 15 years. I'm not even exaggerating. Some call him a gamefaqs troll but no troll does this. Only a legitimate autists would be this way. Like a Chris chan
>veghesther in the comments, complaining about the player in fricking prerelease footage not min-maxing like he does
I love what a moron he is.
VeghEsther is the type of autist that would whine about party comp in a video meant to generate hype for an unreleased game.
It'll be funny if the remake makes Opera and Bowman low tier and Ashton and Precis high tier.
That wouldn't be funny at all. I mean I would enjoy it because Ashton is my favorite character
Still.
Ashton was in top three characters in the original and Precis didn't lag too far behind either so I don't get it.
Seriously, does that homosexual have severe brain damage or something? Probably the most severely autistic dude I have ever seen. Spams the stupidest shit on anything tales or SO and been doing so for years. Got banned from Gamefaqs even. I want to believe is a bot but I'm doubting that.
He hangs out on Kiseki board too. Anything that's a long run JRPG series really. He's autistic of the unironic sense.
>so ~~*shadowbanned*~~ on israelitetube that even my updoots don't work
feels bad man
The spell effects seems to be super wild, I feel like it's going to run like ass on the switch during the mid-late game.
Nah, we've seen actual switch footage with the screen being absolute aids level of chaotic and the performance holds up I'm the 27 to 30s. They've done some crazy shit to this
BTW does anyone has the resolution specs on the switch version? Also does the ps5/PC do 4k?
I think the only thing I'm down on are the UI sound effects
Really wish they copied those wholesale.
Yeah, I'm with you there. Do they even let you customize the menu colors in this one? soul
Sadly no. Rip rainbow barf menu

I don't need a 6 minute video for something I learned in 5 minutes of playing the demo
You do need a 6 minute video lecturing you on not talking about things you're ignorant of.
>the only thing in the video that I didn't know is the invincible escape which the video says is likely a bug that will get patched
Really ignorant.
>make know-it-all post
>find out you didn't in fact know it all
Yes, very ignorant. And still proud of it somehow.
Oh hush you absolute tool.
The gripes were about the length, not the information there-in.
Getting oddly defensive that nobody wants to suffer 6 minutes of a language they (might) not understand is asinine.
I'm a tool because you lashed out at a video without watching it?
>not the information there-in
Saying you learned everything in the video in 5 minutes (something that is actually impossible considering you don't have a multi-hit killer move at the start of the game) is about the information, not about the length. You were trying to say that the information is useless because you picked it up instantly.
>something that is actually impossible considering you don't have a multi-hit killer move at the start of the game
That's an obvious hyperbole you socially stunted sperg
Provided you're not skipping anything you can't even get to the first fight in 5 minutes.
> is about the information, not about the length. You were trying to say that the information is useless because you picked it up instantly.
Oh gee I'm glad you know the intention of a statement that I wasn't aware I had.
Clearly I must have mentioned the 6 minute length for literally no reason you clown.
I have no clue what's wrong with you. But I refuse to get into it with some nonce over a Japanese youtube video.
You "refuse to get into it" 50 minutes after getting into it?
If you need a hyperbole for your argument to even have a chance of making logical sense, you're already admitting you had no argument to begin with. That's setting aside you've already contradicted your post completely and are still fighting to defend it for some reason. You're a clown dude.
Wish we could talk about SO games instead of having a assburger contest of who has more autism. This thread is such a fricking mess and sadly is the only one in whole Ganker with SO in it.
>Use cheat engine to add Dias in my party while having Claude as protagonist
>Dias has unique interactions with Claude during private actions that shouldn't even exist
>Interactions are carried over in the PSP remake
I wonder if they will still be there in the new remake. Although I'll probably just play with Rena this time.
Didn't know about this, you think any other characters have similar hidden/cut content? I wonder if you can get a Claude/Dias ending?
Got anything else to share? Maybe what spells got buffed or how strong they've gotten from other characters?
Played the demo, pretty sure this is going to be a great remake and will likely buy on release.
That being said, don't know if it's been talked about much, but the worst change/update are the break animations. These going to be the worst thing about this game unless they change them. Having the entire combat slow down each time an enemy receives a break (possibly multiple times per battle) just sucks considering all the streamlining they did for the combat, i.e. removing combat stopping spell animations. Especially bad for a game as combat centric as Star Ocean
The end rewards screen feels slightly slow, compared to how snappy everything else felt.
Also felt a bit annoying to chain enemies--they give up really fast, or aren't "looking" in your direction so won't start a chain battle
>spends 2 whole days trying to get all the upgrades on Opera
>missing green
>heart skips a beat every time I see a disk but it's either a black/white upgrade or something else
God I hope this shit is easier on the remake. This is borderline moronic even with the right level and music
It'll be even harder now because you have the RNG of getting the right item and then extra RNG in what equipment bonus it gets.
Oh for frick sake you're right. She can create weapons too and that means there's the chance of factors in them now. Ohnfrick oh God why. I hope that's a mute idea for weapons at least. Frick
nta but the variability in general probably helps replay value even more
Still, I wonder if they rebalanced the game so you don't just absolutely bananas break it as early as orchestra.
The fact that you can craft some real shit so early + the shit they give you for challenges? Yeah I think you can break the shit out of this game earlier than vanilla. Frick, we can already get sword of marvel among other shit a lot earlier and faster than vanilla thanks to hot-spot rewards and challenges. As early as the first hour mark. If you skip text that is.
In other news, just got my green upgrade. Thank frick
Neat. Guess I'll have to adopt restrictions as per usual.
Don't adopt them too much because I've heard Universe difficulty is a lot more harsher than the original. Also the HP of the enemies seems to be much larger than vanilla on that difficulty too. Because I believe the gargoyles were 3500 HP in universe but on the remake they have more than double of that. At least if I'm not remembering wrong from the vanilla. Also Raid monsters seems to be borderline busted too
Did a few universe runs in the demo, was pretty fun. Dodge seems pretty damn strong. Or at least it's probably strong with good reactions.
Late game is probably going to be bonker banans but I still will be pretty moderate with crafting direct combat power. Though given the overall speed increase to everything crafting combat items will be a bit more reasonable to do.
Given they added the cutscene skipping and speedup functionality I think the remake will be a lot better for replaying and experimenting too. I might just finally try that Claude + Rena only run.
Wonder if they'll add an NG+ system.
Third remake when? This is probably the most gatekept entry in the series now(only legally available through Basedny consoles).
Oh wait there's 5, but that one is complete suck so who cares?
5 wasn't irredeemable trash. But good lord what the flying frick were they thinking with that active combat party member size limits. That combined with the lack of actual cutscenes made it feel more like a budget game than a proper star ocean.
And I still don't know where I feel about them reusing some tracks like 'The Desolate Smell of Earth' was that soul or budget? And my word the backtracking. And that piss poor late/post game content and
Hm. Alright maybe 5 did suck.
>5 wasn't irredeemable trash.
just buy a ps4, they're like $50 now

Someone reassure me that I wasn't the only one autistic enough to be bothered by this to an insane degree. I can't fricking BELIEVE they didn't fix it.
Giving him sephiroth hair instead of blue?
Is tear gas still busted? Could anyone with a cheat engine check? Assume you can pop in any character plus level

I'm sure it'll ne great, but I'll miss the original voice lines. Like Noel, the most helpless party member by far using the silence spell with such an authoritive voice.
Or that one wiseman that spammed a spell called Spicule (what the frick is spicule) in the most moronic voice ever.
>what the frick is spicule
"a small or minute, slender, sharp-pointed body or part; a small, needlelike crystal, process, or the like."
>Or that one wiseman that spammed a spell called Spicule (what the frick is spicule) in the most moronic voice ever.
HEY IT'S SPICULE!
OOOOOOOOOOH IT'S HAWT OOOOOOOHOHOHOHOWWWWW
Y'know, if (You) didn't, I would have. Based.
Spicule is Star Ocean's equivalent of Indignation, I couldn't resist, as much as back then SO was plagued by the the usual atrocious western voice actors, same reason why Lezard in VP:L sounds awful in the localization.
>the the usual atrocious western voice actors
heh
"OH IT"S HOT OH HO"
"DON'T YOU THINK I'M VERY STRONG!"
Also
>VP:L
Man who did the casting for VP2 anyways because holy hot damn comparing 1 and 2 is like night and day
Jonathan Klein did the English voice direction for VP2 - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0458804/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr8
Though you can't really blame them in VP:L's case. VP1 had a shoestring budget for English localization and Ocean Group was cheap and fast. All things considered, I'm surprised VP1 is as tolerable as it is and not just an outright disaster.
VP1's pokemon actors dub is incredibly charming though.
>THE ONE I CAN NOT FORGIVE
>IS MYSELF
>same reason why Lezard in VP:L sounds awful in the localization.
Lezard is fricking Meowth. Show some respect.
>same reason why Lezard in VP:L sounds awful in the localization.
His voice is fitting in the first VP, he's meant to be a freakish nerd. It's just a different direction to VP2 where they decided to give him a voice more befitting of his power.
To be honest I've never heard his Japanese PSX voice to compare though.
Lezard is not a nerd, he's meant to be a chuuni, twisted wizard villain with a streak for comedy, that's why he's voiced by Koyasu to begin with
The only two characters the localization got kinda right are Lenneth herself who's somehow almost 1:1 with the original, and Arngrim/Aluzi, the moment you listen to other characters they might as well be completely different.
Belenus is one of the most notable cases like Lezard since his JP performance became a massive meme due to how comically hotblooded he is
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm6342866
Belenus was my favorite character. Even though game hints at him going up in the first chapter, I always kept him with the party and sent the archer kid.
I remember when I rented the original game as a kid I didn't go to the skill menu until i was ~8 hrs in or however long and i saw my characters had all these skill points and there was a million random things they could get, like cook, steal etc etc.
My memories are really hazy, but what was up with those skills? Are there any that are recommended, or that add a fun dynamic.
I'm probably remembering it all wrong, it was so long ago.
Individual skills gave you stats for levelling them, combinations of skills were tied to item creation levels or other usable skill levels, both of which were further enhanced by talents that characters started with and could learn more of by using skills. It was a complex system that was completely scrapped in the next game and only sort of came back with 6.
We don't know if the remake works the same yet.
Seems like there's some odd bugs here and there with now status ailments and debunks are applied. At least with the demo
?si=nTAKFKon6r4khd4v
Does SE patch these remakes ever?
Once every blue moon. Unless they tackle these on full release
here's that team you ordered

31 more days to go, bros. 1 more month for this to release.

The fact that Claude didn't immediately rape her after saving her in the forest really speaks to his self-control.

I know Blue Sphere leans more into specific pairings than SO2, but yeah, I found the not so subtle Kenny hair color shift amusing.
I mean, Ronyx had black hair and his child became blonde like his wife. Claude was just doing the same.
You think there will be crazy mods being made for this one like character hacking? If not, I'll just go Switch version.
Doubt there will be any mods. At least not significant ones.
For all the datamining that went on, did they check if it was possible to extract and modify the script?
same I preordered the game on PS5. really looking forward to November. always play sub if it is available.
Alright sleepy fricks, here's some shit.
https://twitter.com/StarOcean/status/1709561767750480365?t=ES80tqmRtVe-vEa6v1IczA&s=19
They renamed the eternal sphere? But why?
To be fair, the name makes no sense. Damn thing isn't spherical
literally soulless and sphereless
Don't worry, it's not even the strongest sword anymore. We got another with a cooler name anyways
>imbued with the eternal powers of the never-ending MMORPG
thanks star ocean 3
I'm a bit upset that they reworked the battle system, but insisted in only allowing two techniques per character.
Yeah I was hoping for more too but there might be an upside. Probably. An official post showed gameplay of combo links and it may be possible that this could be an actual option for everyone and combo link becomes a keyitem instead of an acc. I'm hard speculating based on that small clip tho
Looks shit.

Not at all. She genuinely sees Dias as her brother and Dias has 0 romantic interest in her since he sees his sister on her.
I like the look, but two things ruin it for me, and they're both basically the same thing.
The writing is awful.
It's a Star Ocean game. Star Ocean really is the Enix/Square Enix equivalent of the "Tales of" series. Always disappointing.
So you came here already expecting to not care. Here's a pity (You)

One time, about 20~ish years ago my dad was watching me play it and made fun of Claude when he said that line. I'll never forget it lmao.

Final dungeon had OHKO enemies that were so aggravating... great game and series honestly. Play the new one
To this day I have not finished the last dungeon on universe difficulty. Artificial difficulty.

why the sprites look so washed out? hopefully they fix this
They won't. So you can now add another small thing to b***h about.
I love this thread if only for the autistic battle cries.

>I was originally planning on getting it for my Switch but the graphics are genuinely really pretty
i don't have anything besides a switch and a pc so i have to take a guess on which port will be less broken
Probably PC since it has everyone's favorite anti piracy
Anyone going to the Square Enix cafe event?
Playing First Departure. I don't exactly understand what orchestra does. It supposedly grants all talents to all members, but internet discussions also mention your orchestra level mattering. If that's the case then orchestra must be some kind of scalable bonus to something.
I'm a 90's turn-based fan born in the 80s. I played this demo on both PS5 and PC and thought it was legit as frick. I skipped everything I could though lol.
The story is pretty cool and the characters are mostly quite charming. This isn't your standard JRPG, don't skip!
I think I'll actually buy this (learned about from this thread) when it releases, and will go through the story then.
But a demo with a time limit? To me that's a challenge to skip everything and see how far I can get.
It's cozy though.
Yep, just pre-ordered it on steam. The demo made me feel things like It was the 90s again - absolute surprise, the demo legit restored my faith in video games.
Based. I sold some crap on TF2 the other day to pay for it, but I'm waiting for the full release. No reason to tease myself with the demo when it's less than two weeks away.
I'm pumped, Gankerro!
Playing through the game, thought Precis is going to be turbo anoying moe pedobait character
But shes giga based so far, I think I might have to romance her instead of Opera, what I originally planned to do for like a decade now
>When everyone on Steam sees I've bought a weeb nerd game and the Steam trailer is in english with a 50 y.o. extremely-drunk-sounding BBW narrator.
Eh, I've suffered worse embarrassments.
First time i've ever played anything Star Ocean related but did the 3 hours of the demo.
Without getting into too many sopilers I just wanna know if the space stuff eventually comes back or not? Because I expected an space farring rpg but so far it just feels like a regular fantasy jrpg but the MC got isekai'd and the one lazer gun from his space military background he had he can't use and settles for a sword in the meantime.
Yes, you aren't in space very often though. The scifi elements do come back pretty hard in the second half.
Okay, thank you
To be fair, "star ocean" was just a cool name (and is) they thought of 30 years ago, but really none of the mainline titles offer anything of the sort. Some of the later ones dabbled in it a bit; I think you get a "space ship" in 4 but it's really just a hub world you teleport to other places with, and even then, there are only a handful of planets with one or two towns/dungeons each. It's pretty wack.
SO2 remains the best in the series, but there are only two planets. One of which is really more half of a planet. But it's still got tons of soul.
technically, there are three planets in Claude's story.
haha, oh (You)! Fair enough. But by that logic, you could say that, in fact, there were actually FOUR since some cutscenes take place on Earth. Or, ACKSHUALLY, there are FIVE since some cutscenes take place on the original Nede. OR, in FAAAACT, that there are SIX, considering "Expel 2" is technically both a planet and not actually.
i know my post sounds snarky and like i'm being antagonistic, but it's really meant in jest. I'm curious if one could argue a potential seventh planet, but I can't really think of any the party physically, or metaphysically in the case of Expel 2, visits.
...Well, actually, make it eight, because I just realized that certain endings might technically be on other planets. My most recent playthrough a couple of years ago had Leon and Opera ending up together strangely enough, and it didn't look like any planet shown in the game before. But I can't really remember the details, coulda been Earth for all I know. Anyway, interesting to troll about.
Touche. I was mostly considering planets where gameplay actually takes place, but yes you got me
How's First Departure R? Played the SNES version a year or two ago, but wasn't too hot on it. Game was a technically beautiful game that felt really unfinished, and I got tired of running across the world back and forth and getting new party members at like level 6 or some shit at a point in the game where the rest were 35-40. Burned me out enough I couldn't be assed to start 2 on PS1 very far.
With 2's new remake coming out, thinking of playing FDR to refresh myself before 2Re comes out.
FDR is fine, it retunes the gameplay and movement is overall much faster on the world map. SO1 isn't a very long or difficult game though so I'm not sure how one gets burned out. Did you just find it boring?
It wasn't very long, but the middle section being padded as much as possible as well as the game handing me constantly underleveled characters after the halfway point really drug the game on. I was having fun at some points and then I'd hit a weird wall I'd have to grind or rush the next town for equipment for, or I'd have to run the world length again, and it just got to me. I'm sure if I was metagaming skills and stuff, some of this would have been less of an issue but I was done with the game by the time I actually reached the end, which itself felt very unfinished on SNES. Per gameplay changes listed here, seems like a lot of my issues are gone in the remake, so it should be a quick/doable playthrough.
I think by the time I got to 2 on PS1 after finishing 1 SNES, I just wanted a different kind of game even if the beginning of 2 I played was pretty good and I really liked the party members I recruited before I dipped out.
The gameplay is better and the travel is less annoying since it has a world map now, but it still feels rather empty compared to 2. Since it was built on 2's engine they also reused a lot of enemies from 2 in it.
>Dorne's English VA is named "Dick Smallberries Jr.
This HAS to be a pseudonym.
Still can't decide if I want to get it on PC or Switch. On the one hand, physical+portability on Switch is nice (plus I have First Departure on it too), on the other hand PC ver is cheaper and runs sooo much better.
You can get the PC version for "free" if you wait enough.
Could be a pretty long wait, all things considered.
Do we know if the demo was Denuvo'd as well (as counterintuitive as it sounds)? If so, the performance impact from it is weirdly nonexistent. If not, which is more likely, gonna have to wait and see how bad it is I guess, or just buy and refund.
PC ver is going to ship with Denuvo
>Major spoilers in the first 45 seconds
Great trailer, very good for people who haven't played the original.
Reminder that a certain death in FF7 was right on the back of the box. Same idea applies here, Japan has a tendency of putting major plot events out of context on purpose as part of trailers to generate hype. Usually what happens is that the people who whine about it being spoilers is what alerts the new players about its significance.
You'd have to be an absolute moron to see the Calnus getting blown up in that trailer and not immediately connect the dots when you see it at the start of the actual game.
If memory serves me correctly, you don't see it on Rena's route until said scene. So there's plausible deniability there.

Welp, I have officially found the FIRST nitpick negative thing about the remake so far. However, from what I understand, I will have the option to either use Japanese voices or HOPEFULLY, turn them off altogether. I'm not a stim-addled gen z moron that would rather kys myself than read text and prefer the OG in that respect, anyway, so in all honesty, I prefer no voices.
Except in battle. Supposedly, I can even choose to use the OG voices for this? I doubt it, but hoo-boy, that'd be neat.
mY aNTiCipAtIon iS StArtiNg To OvErFLOW!
It's Spike Spencer, he has the exact same voice for Shinji Ikari too, the guy is incompetent. Also, the voice options are English PSP, JP PSP, or JP PSX. No English PSX voices.
It really is a shame, letting you recruit everyone and having PAs for all of them would've firmly cemented this as the best remake of all time.
There's a new jp dub from the psx cast, rather than the psx jp dub.
I’m not familiar with star ocean. Anything I should know before I pick this up on release or best to go in blind?
There's a postgame dungeon that's basically impossible to find naturally but contains 1/10th of the content. So don't forget about it once you're at the final boss.
The remake added QOLs over this, but if you want to go for specific pairings and endings, best pay attention to events and maybe have a guide handy.
PSA
The Switch version requires a 4.1 GB download to play.
That's insanely gay, what the frick. Might as well just pick up digital then.
I guess they've decided to go with the cheapest 8 GB cart then, and the game is stated to be just under 12 GB, so...
Hopefully the situation is different in the other regions, I wouldn't mind importing from EU/SEA if they get a full cart.
Is it multi-language for the text and UI?
Any word from the EU/SEA bros? Did they get hit with the same bullshit?
bump, curious about importing if the other versions dont require download.

So they CAN be assed to make new spritework.
Then would've it fricking killed them to at least touch up the sprites of the main cast a bit?
>So they CAN be assed to make new spritework.
>Then would've it fricking killed them to at least touch up the sprites of the main cast a bit
It would probably look odd if they did just a few sprites. Tales of Phantasia X did that and you can clearly tell which sprites are new and which ones are recycled.
But there are a few new animation frames in the game, such as
Starting the demo, can you really only have just two special movies equipped at once? Thats pathetic.
you know, I had my doubts about picking this up but this trailer is fricking sick https://youtu.be/7WwmZq-k8v4.
Think I'll wait for a sale though, especially since there's a required download.
Played PSX with the so bad its good dub all those years ago when I didn't even know what jacking off was.
Bought the EN release of the PSP release when it first came out.
Played the PSP undub some time ago.
And now I'm gonna play with the redubbed PSX JP voices for a new experience and to test around my JP listening skills
Real shame that they're still doing that moronic party restriction though. It's fricking weird because the OP for this remake shows a full party ensemble and its more or less canon in the lore that they got around to forming a full party. Would've been more fun to do party composition mixups if you had access to the whole cast.
So which characters are exclusive to who? I only know Dias is Rena only.
Dias is only on Rena's route, Leon is only on Claude's route. Ashton and Opera + Ernest are mutually exclusive, Precis and Bowman are mutually exclusive. That's it.
Claude Rena Opera Bowman Ernest Leon Filler Filler
Rena Claude Celine Ashton Precis Dias Welch Filler
There you go, have fun.
Man I hope the Switch version on handheld is at a stable 30. Really want to play this on my bed.
Honestly even as a pc player I'm really scared of frame dips for very busy particle heavy end game stuff like ethereal queen.
Just get a Steam Deck or any of its clones then.
>I hope the Switch version on handheld is at a stable 30
Got bad news for you buddy, judging by the demo it already doesn't feel like it.
The 'eck is not THAT powerful either, and even if the frames won't dip, the PC version is riddled with denuvo which causes microfreezes and stutters.
So any story additions? For example, Second Evolution actually added a frickton of new Private Actions compared to Second Story
Is R essentially just a polished up Second Evolution with a reworked battle system? Or did they add more story scenes and whatnot? What about the post-game? I'm not expecting Till the End of Time amount of sidequest and post-game content (but it would be nice if they did have that), but is it just the usual Maze of Tribulations, Gabriel/Ethereal Queen and the souped up final boss?
How are we gonna know about post-game when it's not out yet?
The only thing we can say for sure is that if there is any new story content it won't be voiced.
>The only thing we can say for sure is that if there is any new story content it won't be voiced.
How do we know that?
Just by data mining the demo?
> if there is any new story content it won't be voiced.
Rather, it won't be voiced by any of the PSP original cast (be it EN or JP) I imagine.
It'd be fricking strange if they rehired all the original PSX JP cast to do a new dub and make them not bother with any additional new content since its an entirely new recording for them.
Considering the absolutely moronic state of voice acting in Burgerland, I'm 100% certain they won't be able to bring back any of the PSP EN cast. But it's a coin flip on the PSP JP cast. I'm pretty sure most of the seiyuu are still active on the scene. Emphasis on "most" here since Bowman's PSP JP seiyuu is dead. I imagine that they'll just be relying on archive audio for the PSP JP voice track.
4 days!
I WANT IT NOW
Look for a store in your area that broke street date. Always happens.
I'd rather wait an extra four days than play on consoles.
As much as I hate the sprites, I do want to play it because I'm curious about the QoL improvements.
>you still only have 2 skills
Whatever improvements they made its not enough.
From what I've seen of the battle interface, and the crafting interface, there is something there. The 3D backgrounds are gorgeous and SO2 had the most absolutely beautifully atmospheric soundtrack.
Shut up. I'm kinda hype.
Will reviewers like it?
If they get paid to, of course
Is there a significant reason to pick one character over the other besides preference going in for the first time?
Exclusive characters
Thanks, ps1 game so thought there could be some foolishness down the road.
There are different perspectives for some events, I think Claude's version of the story is generally more interesting and has more emotional weight.
May just be the emulation but the load times in the switch version of the demo are way slower, like seconds.
I think someone said that the Switch loads in like 5-6 seconds while if you play it on PS5 or PC on an SSD it's at most 2 seconds.
Will you be able to change the portraits during cutscenes for the final release? I want the PSP art.
Yeah, you'll be able to choose between the PS1, PSP and remake portraits.
That's only in the status menu, not cutscenes.
Oh, if that doesn't change it then I guess not.
For those that played the demo, how's the difficulty? Even back then, I remember the game being on the easy side. And that's without the usual SO methods of breaking the game in half.
Universe is legit hard now in early game if you're reflex-let like me, gargoyles at the end of the demo took way more attempts than I feel comfortable with and I've probably beat the game 20+ times on universe.
We're going to need a new thread especially for the ones who manage to get their copies early.
EBGames in Aus had the Switch version up for pre-order along with the PS5 version, but they removed it from their site a few days ago and now only list the PS5 version. Wonder what happened there?
ps4 or switch version?
