I only played Star Ocean 3. Is 2 considered the best game in the series? How do anons feel about the rest of the games?

I like 1-4 and 6 as well as the Gameboy color game which is translated and excellent

I think I'm a minority because I don't like 2, but I love the rest of the rest, except for 5. It's a bad Star Ocean, a bad ARPG and a bad game.
5 was rushed and low budget but I still had a good time with it. Seeing people getting filtered by the protecting Anne's quests was fun too.
Never seem someone that plays games actually caring about this shit. Feels like it's just something for morons to fight about.
2 is far and away the best. Lovable cast, lots of replay value, item crafting is fun to dick around with. 3 comes the closest to 2 when it comes to fun.

It does have a crafting system that lets you break the game but it works differently.

Low poly 3d graphics with pre rendered 2d vistas and good 2d sprites is the best possible look a game could possible have. It's the god combination and the reason everyone loves star ocean 2 (also being a fun game helps)

Nope. 2D character sprites on a low poly background looks bad. It looks okay against a pre-rendered background, but proper low poly character models are best against those types of backgrounds.
I like it too and it's cool that they let you use the old ones too (the psp version aged really badly), same for the music.

Agreed. The psp versions art looked horrible. I am glad this game gives those who prefer the original games portraits the option to swap. On a side note, its insane how the remake's art style made Ashton actually look cool
New art looks cool and I like the sprites. The 3D stuff looks terrible tho but I'll still get it because I love SO2.

Designs look fine, but the english voices and mouth movements on their portraits are so uncanny that I decided not to get it after playing the demo a bit.
This one's art is so good it almost makes me get over the psp port's art.
And they know it's shit too because I think thye let you pick this one or the original ps1's art but not the psp version.
This is the only good Star Ocean in the series, imo.
But again, that's strictly my own opinion and it's fine if you love the others. I just didn't care for how the other games handled characters or their stories, and I kind of hate the 3rd game retcon regarding the existence of what they live in.
Second Story is wonderful though. Lots of fun things to level in, Iron Chef in the 2nd half of the game, you don't feel bad if you heavily level your characters doing side content because you can remove a limiter on the final boss that will make them harder so you don't have the normal JRPG problem of making the last boss a joke if you do too much content.
I started playing 1 in preparation but couldn't get too into it. Seems like 2 will have denuvo though so it's not like I need to be on time anyway.
The 1 remake was redesigned from the OG game to be more similar to Star Ocean 2 (because it's generally considered the best in the series by fans). But 1's appeal was almost entirely the concept of mixing a Star Trek-like group with standard fantasy JRPG stuff, the game itself doesn't get any more interesting beyond that.
Star Ocean 2 is legitimately good.
The problem with what I played from 1 is that instead of exploring other planets and shit, you just go right back into the generic fantasy world you got out of. They're even forced to leave all their Star Trek tech behind when they go into the past, so it doesn't feel like it's making full use of the setting.

Dias is cool looking and in plot but gameplaywise unfortunately he hits slow
Opera is decent, Earnest is Thousand Whips spam(not a ton of damage, but its basically instant at max proficiency and staggers/interrupts just about everything and is pretty cheap to use as well. It's just Ashton is so fricking good most people will never go out of their way to NOT recruit him in order to get Earnest/Opera instead regardless if they are playng as Claude or Rena, and I can't blame them. Chisato is great, she's my favorite character but she comes so fricking late in the game which is a shame.
Yeah Ashton is my favourite char but if I don't skip him this time I feel like I'll never get the other 2. As for Chisato we have the same reasoning but I want to focus a bit more on her this time.

I recruit Opera+Earnest because Opera's ending w/Claude and Earnest solo ending are unironically better endings then if you get them back together imo. Plus I may be in the minority on this but I don't really like Ashton that much.
Really liked the demo. Characters were likeable, like the VAs and I loved the sprite art. A bit worried about censorship though as apparently the first remake was?
Will probably play in JP anyway.

3 is a fricking for the first 20ish hours. the combat and world takes so long to open up and some of those dungeons are horrifying. like the train track shit...

I love the Star Ocean series. Very excited for the remake of 2, it's the first one I played when I was a kid. Hope this brings more hype for the series so we can get more. Though fewer, I find the series far better than Tales.

To be fair though the Tales Studio got pretty lazy too these days. All they have for Arise after 2 years is some shitty Story DLC when in the past they used to port games with additional characters and massive gameplaytechnical overhauls. So we're kinda on the same Level as SO

I've always been on the fence with this franchise. I knew 2 was the best one, and i almost played the psp version back in the early 10s.
Im definitely playing this remaster, specially after playing SO Blue Sphere for the game boy color (played for a few hours but stopped because it's a very direct sequel to SO2), it's really really good, it's possibly the best rpg out of all of the NES and gameboy.

the snes version got a remake for the psp which essentially used to same engine as the 2nd game and made it alot closer to that. I liked both versions. the snes one is dated but its a seriously impressive game for the snes. The game itself I think has a good story and cast of characters.

If you want to play first depature remake just emulate the psp version. your cpu will thank you.

yeah I read online that the R port had increased movement speed, which I couldn't believe since you move so slowly on the world map and I couldn't imagine it being any slower on PSP. Little did I know what that actually meant.

About 3/5 of the game is on a medieval planet, then you go to a more advanced planet. The advanced planet's technology isn't exactly futuristic though in most ways.
Star Ocean is a series about undeveloped planets getting wrapped up in the problems of advanced planets. If that's a problem for you, you should really just not play the games.
