Yes. Technically, everything that you, personally, think is wrong with the game can be fixed now. But someone still has to be the one to do that.
I don't personally think anything, the multiplayers netcode is laggy as shit this is a known fact, every streamer i've seen play starbound states this loudly.
It could. But I dunno if someone will. Diving in a new codebase (that probably was never intended to be released publicly) you know nothing about is A LOT of work. And it's for a game that isn't super popular now. And it's going to be hard to coordinate with other people and share your work because the whole thing isn't supposed to be public. You could release binary patches but if the official game is still being updated they'll go stale all the time. You could pester the devs with source patches so that they merge it but there's no guarantee they'll do so, so it could all be wasted time.

the game hasn't been updated for years and most of the content comes from mods already.

The Night edge is such a good weapon and imho is way too easy to get early game.
Probably had to streamline it for ease with how ships are upgraded.

Idk I think base Terraria is big, but not crazy big. Running it with Calamity on the other hand... Great mod but I almost felt disgusted at how hard I got addicted and how much shit I had to deal with, especially if you want to craft all the endgame weapons or bother with that weird ass hidden laboratories shit.
