Also I'm a former diamond protoss and switched to zerg in SC2. Protoss early game just feels fragile to me and I don't feel comfortable until the mid-game when I get my tech. I don't know who is more OP but toss is the weakest imo.

Back when I was stationed in Korea in 2001 we didn't have internet in the barracks so me and my buddy hooked up lan lines (ran it out my 3rd story window then tied it to something and threw it to his 2nd story window, fun times). First we got c&c whatever from the bootleg shop in the ville and he used to stomp me regularly and him being able to stomp me in vidya became a pretty common theme in our friendship adventures.
Then by chance we both picked up StarCraft from the bootleg shop and thought we'd give it a go. Now I had a katusa roommate (Korean soldiers that worked with us army) and when he saw me booting up StarCraft he got all wild-eyed and told me he knew "a little bit about it". So I went to my friend and challenged him to a game haughtily, and he thought he'd whoop me like he always does. But I let my katusa buddy play instead and he proceeded to absolutely obliterate him with great finesse, showing me all these neat tricks and methods of destruction.
Afterwards I went to his room with a big shit eating grin on my face and gloated shamelessly and my friend got seriously pissed and ran me off. I continued to gloat the next day and he was majorly pissed off over it all day. Then later that night I spilled the beans and we both laughed it off.
Anyway that's my only experience with StarCraft. Never played it since
In Brood War, it seems like Zerg needs to have more expos because they're very gas-heavy in terms of their requirements. I also heard that Protoss needs to stay one or two bases ahead relative to Terran. Is that for the same reason? It seems like Terran in TvP builds tanks/goliaths/dropships constantly in that matchup, so why are they able to stay on two bases for so long? I feel like tons of tanks/goliaths would actually take more gas than a bunch of dragoons and a couple reavers.

The disparity in base count between races is more to do with economy, army mobility and cost efficiency of the units than needing gas. Everyone needs gas.
Zerg tends to have fewer workers than the other two races but you get diminishing returns on minerals the more workers you have on a base so they spread them out over more bases to keep up. Their armies are much more mobile too so they can more easily defend multiple locations.
Terran units tend to trade super efficiently on two bases they can mass them all in one chokepoint and hold against a much larger protoss force. A good tank setup with some vultures will kill far more than their value in zealots and dragoons, this means that protoss need to have more bases to fight effectively. Tanks are slow though and you need a critical mass of them to work so they can't spread themselves over a bunch of bases or Protoss will just kill whatever base is weakest and then get out of there before Terran can reposition.
Thank you, that makes complete sense. Casters always use phrasing like "he needs to be at least one base ahead if he wants to win this", which made me think it was a matter of actual higher resource requirements, rather than being related to raw ability to hold ground at various stages.

SC1 + Brood War.
Superior atmosphere, everything was simple and on spot, the factions were not violated by basedboys, Terrans were not mostly rednecks, Zerg were the Nightmare Invaders and they lived up to their name, Protoss were not biologically homogenized and were guttural baritone high-tech religious psychic space barbarians...AND THEN SC2 CAME AND FRICKED EVERYTHING UP.
SC2's retcons, alterations and atmosphere are horrible. The game's only redeeming quality is co-op commanders. I would, for the one specific reason, re-buy WoL and HoTS (and buy LoTV) on Steam when it finally arrives and leave a very detailed critical review of why SC2 is shit in terms of how badly it ruined the setting, the characters and the story that was supposed to be something really big after SC1 and BW only to have it violated with a story that should've been relegated to WarCraft instead or any other fantasy setting but not a sci-fi one. Did I also mention that SC2 feels like it's closer to a sci-fantasy setting thanks to what it presented? Seriously screw it. WoL made it all look like everything was so damn promising only to shit it all with what HoTS and LoTV presented.

Starcraft peaked at the Wings of Liberty campaign and its level of customization. The Zerg unit customization was neat too, but not as much as the Terran campaign while the Protoss customization was just light fan service at best.
I liked the LotV customisation. Some of the options could do with a buff or a complete rework but being able to change everything between each mission and those changes having a significant impact on how you play the game was pretty cool.
WoL has a similar number of trash options but if you want to try them out then you're locked in and will have to miss out somewhere else.

This was a great read. I particularly liked his analysis of cross spawns and chances of victory by time elapsed and how balanced the standard maps really are. It should make my games and watching future ASLs more entertaining as I'll know what the odds are.

which even further debunks the wrist cope, ZvZ is all about muta micro and you have to be absolute TOP at that. Modern pros begin playing starcraft by learning and mastering muta micro, he learned this "backwards" from an era where the game wasn't figured out as much, and its showing

So I own the booklet on the left, but it's in storage and I don't know where. However something caused me to look it up, and I can't find much of anything about it online except this image. I got it in the Starcraft Brood War Battle Chest and as a kid I loved it.
It was full of the full history and lore of the Terrans, Protoss and Zerg and was full of supplementary classic Metzen art. I'd love to be able to find a scan of it but just a cursory glance on sadpanda didn't find anything (though they have tons of other game booklets and manuals, like the Starcraft Field Manual).
Anybody know anything?

SC1 remaster looks too clean compared to the original, I don't like it.
I don't like the way Vulture and Aldaris portraits look in remastered. Also they changed the colours of stars for some reason when playing in vanilla graphics mode. Compare the way they look here in 1.16.1 compared to in the remaster's release. They were originally based on actual star classes, with bright blue supergiants, yellow G-class stars, dim red dwarfs that you can just barely make out. Absolutely soulless change.
I don't mind the cleanliness and I concede to sprites that are closer to the actual concept art than what I thought they were. But I really don't like the artistic freedom in portraits, they adjusted them to be closer to sc2 but also less like 3D models and more like animated paintings. Large flat textures have ugly handpainted detail, and hud elements and stuff like victory screens look too sharpened.
I also don't like the rerecording of the endearingly awful spanish voicelines
I dislike how the new zerg buildings look less slimy, they seem dried out compared to the normal graphics. But the picture overal looks clearer so its more readable. The portraits are a definite step back though. I dont like the new SCVs, the leather cap just doesnt fit. The old marine portrait looked like a guy gleaming with sweat, the new one just has the blue screen projected on his face for no reason. HT doesnt look as good. The shadow with 2 red eyes was a lot better.

Unit size mattering is something I didn't get until two decades later, how was I supposed to know? Manual doesn't say shit, neither the battle chest that contained both game, expansion and a guide, there was no way to figure out Dragoon damage was ineffective vs marines,bats and medics.
I don't know, maybe paying attention to how damage works? Twenty years in and you didn't notice that your vultures did shit damage to tanks?

The thing with this mechanic is that it sees completely arbitrary. I just immediately concluded that ghosts and dragoons have broken damage and assumed it was a glitch. I remember my father also had no fricking idea why the units didnt deal as much damage as they said they did.
I had to start watching english casted SC1 before I found out about unit size damage modifiers, it's a great system but it isn't explained at all to the user.
Only way to know is from the online guide. I searched the manual and the only time they mention anything its concussive damage. And they use it as a flavor description for extra scarab damage. Maybe the ingame tips tell you? But the only reference I could find was to the SC internet guide
I noticed it way back when I replaced my marines with ghosts and then saw them struggle to kill ultralisks in the terran campaign. But that seems like an incident, not an explanation. There is no reason not to explain it seeing how big of an impact it has. At the same time stuff like mines and scarabs also deal uneven damage but those are because of splash dropoff.
Prima guide had the information too but otherwise you would be out of luck. However, the firebat and vulture doing poor amounts of damage compared to their incredibly high "on paper" damage would had been very noticeable, and you can then test it out by attacking your own tanks (for example). I agree though, it was a massive oversight not to stick that information into the manual somewhere.
It wouldn't make a difference in TvP since firebats don't get produced, but in TvZ it would make a huge difference since they would be incredibly deadly against zerglings.
The most noticeable damage reduction is mutalisk with small designation, always wondered why are they considered 'broken' when you realize most forms of anti air only do half damage on them.

i thought firebats are good against dragoons as a kid because of how "strong" their attack looked visually. Thought they're heavy hitters.
Firebats attack is unmitigated when hitting shield hp, once they are in armor their damage goes to shit so they need back up, also their 1 base armor helps tank more of the damage so their usefulness is three fold against zealots as well.
Would it break the game to give Firebats 2 base armor?
It would be a inconsistent, since there's only a few things in the game with >1 armor and they're all high end units. I don't think it would do that much, either: the armor would only help routinely against other Tier 1 units, which they're already good at fighting. So I don't think it would really change their usability.

In PvZ it wouldnt help much since they're slower than scourge (they need the speed upgrade in order to match the wraith/muta/scourge/corsair in speed) so they would just get scourged to death. If you buff them too much the protoss could go corsair/scout and completely shut down the economy of a zerg. You would have to go hydra first to survive.

That's fine if it isn't better than sairs for early game PvZ. The goal isn't to have scouts be a great addition to every composition in every matchup all the time, just to have one or two applications per matchup. Right now it's built approximately never.
Firebats already rape Zerglings, I imagine early pushes wouldn't change too much since you'd need to be making medics for an early push, and in the midgame you'd need a wall of sunks to hold off a big push anyway. I don't think it would be broken but Firebats already have a niche role, they don't need to be any stronger
It's not like you'd ever consider making Firebats against protoss over vulture bikes, and they're already wicked good against lings.

I dont like how they think all you need is tournament money. All you do is just inflate the pro scene with subsidies, as soon as you pull the plug it will just shrink down to its old size. AOE2 doesnt just pump out tournaments. It also

Sure. Blizzard can aid in some tournaments, but there is plenty of other stuff they could do. I think tons of people would buy a mission pack for SC1 thats like nova ops. tons of people would pick the game up again if they're able to play against some beefed up AI. Plenty of people wouldnt wash out of ladder play if they can learn basics like "dont die to cheese 2 minutes in" in a friendly environment.
Blizzard just needed to keep adding to coop commander (and make it possible to play with an AI partner)
I was talking about broodwar. And I think broodwar could also benefit from coop mode. Considering how much extreme BW abilities are, you could have some really cool stuff. It would also be a great way to make some of the lesser used but beloved units playable. Like a protoss faction that has strong scouts, or a terran that has strong ghosts.
You could make coop campaign missions as well. They were neat in red alert 3. I think engaging a large playerbase, even casuals that only play a big game hunters match once per week, is a lot more productive than pumping money into tournaments. BW became an esport because everyone and their mom played it, not because 20 guys were playing it 16 hours per day and it would be cool to watch them.
Up until DE, people just played Age of Conquerors with a widescreen patch on Voobly. Also they shouldn't frick with the game and DE basically has a mod team endlessly tinkering with it when we really should be getting new releases instead of rehashing.
I know, but the voobly scene was pretty small. Im just saying that you can add to SCBW without doing things like balance changes. You can release content parallel to the ladder gameplay. I think that would end up a lot more productive than following artosis's idea of just pumping money into tournaments.

AOE2 also has custom maps but they still sell campaigns. Im sure people would pay good money for an official blizzard campaign in broodwar. I assume blizzard would want to make money. But an offcial campaign that explores a different part of the SC universe (maybe the cleanup of UED after BW, or exploring the kel moran combine) would definitely pay out handsomely

I started playing SC2 again, my most recent match was 4 years ago. Currently schlubbing it in Diamond. It's amazing how quickly it all comes back, I actually won most of my placements for Terran and Zerg even after the gap.
Mostly playing Zerg at the moment and just Roachmaxxing to keep it simple while I get back in the swing of things.

Like i said I'm playing zerg and just 1-1 roachmaxxing to get my macro back on point. Typically hitting 200 supply with 70 drones at about 9:30.
This wasn't even a good strat when i last played, but it's a super harsh skill check for your opponent, most can't hold it until like low masters.
The ESL tournament being stretched into weeks does not make me want to follow it.

Mtx are moronic, and I don't care for them. I bought the full game with all 3 campaigns, I bought the other 11 co-op commanders for 18 total, and I even bought 3 announcers 1 for each race to replace the default ones (mengsk, abathur, alarak because they're based). I think that's the most money I have ever spent on any single game, and I'm actually happy with it since I still get very good gameplay mileage out it. I was on the fence with the announcers and usually don't buy shit like that, but it's nice since I play the game a lot and they were relatively cheap.
What blows my mind are the people who pay for the massive scams that are unit skins for ladder play. That shit is wildly overpriced for such a barely noticeable difference, it's like paying $18 for a different color of power armor in fallout 76.

The UI lacks tons of QOL features, so for a very long time they only domains you can really make meaningful improvement in are in studying strategies/builds, and doing everything exactly the same but faster. Speed is king.

Is there any info on how Starcraft 2's pathing looks under the hood? Its probably the best movement I saw in any 2D plane game with multiple units.
I do believe when they were showing off their pathfinding in promotional videos they mentioned flow field pathing. Collision detection is basically off when they move, although they will continue to repel and push each other so that they don't permanently fuse together while moving. This repelling field is noticeably smaller when moving, which means that an army in motion takes up a lot less space than a stationary army. That is the secret to Starcraft 2's characteristically smoother movement that also results in army blobbing. You can squeeze an entire army through a tiny chokepoint far faster than expected because the units de facto shrink in size. Basically, the trick isn't in the pathfinding, but in greatly reducing their footprint while they're moving.

The design in Starcraft Broodwar was amazing. I love the creepy, disgusting feel of zergs, the brutalist, raw, metal style of terran, and the (as described) above mysterious, ancient vibe of the protoss.
The sound design was amazing, too, siege tank siegeing is still one of my favourite game sounds ever.
Starcraft 2, while impressive in its own way, doesn't even come near BW design-wise, even putting the campaigns aside.
