Starfield

I'm sorry but doesn't everything about this game look kinda... pathetic?
Like... it's horrifically bloated, but also empty. It keeps showing off vistas but they all look ugly and bland. They show off soulless automaton npcs and procedurally generated noise like it's revolutionary. Everyone knows it'll be broken and unplayable too like every other Bethesda game on launch, cause they rely on and steal user fixes to make their games actually work.
Then you have it surrounded by much, much, MUCH better games releasing with more heart and feeling put in to them. It's going to be an utter embarrassment.
It seems like chasing trends and thinking people will accept their buggy trash will finally catch up with Bethesda cause there's just zero buzz around this and everyone I know is eagerly skipping it.

Nobody cares about this game anymore. It's an exclusive to a console no one has or cares about, will probably run like shit on PC, and looks boring as hell even for someone who loves games like Elite Dangerous and X4.

Everyone was really impressed by the direct, ever biased Sony shills, theres no controversy around the game which is why it isn't talked about. People talked about AMD exclusivity for a entire week because it was drama. Before the direct they're was more talk because it was all speculation. Now were just waiting for the game

I just know what I'll be doing the entire time I play it.

Land on a planet. Walk around and stumble one some broken buildings with a audio log making it seem like a deep place where something crazy happened. Go to some landmarks for a side quest or quest.

Pretty much all I'm excited for are seeing the vistas.

Space Engine is a planetarium, you just fly around, look at proc gen planets with no biomes, not even rocks, very low res textures. You just look at things. Yeah you can "land" on a planet with no loading screen and find a good spot to take a screenshot, because there's practically nothing to show or do anyway.
I remember you could spawn a spaceship and pretend you were flying it around, but it's similar to the "flight simulator" mode on google earth.

The difference being that Space Engine displays an entire universe in the background, allowing you to play with perspectives and make nice screenshots, while Tardfield will likely use a dynamic sky to simulate outer space.

          >it's the same thing you'll do in starfield except with all the boring space bandit bases cut out
Yeah it's clearly "the same as Starfield without everything in Starfield apart from looking at planets".

Elite Dangerous you hyperspace between star systems too, and thats a full on space sim. Its light years between stars, and there's nothing there. Would kind of dull if you had to fly light years in real time at regular speeds.

        Anonymous

You can attack other flying ships? Also you’re never reaching another star system without warp drive

The problem is not the hyperdrive, freelancer had gates that allowed you to reach new systems at fast speed, however, pirates would disable the gates while you are using it, I just want to jump out in the middle of the road the check if there something in there.

To be fair, why would you want to explore the void between systems? It's a void, by definition there is nothing there.

Bit moronic that landing on a planet is done through a loading screen and since there is no vehicles or mounts, plants will mostly be a few small areas you can land at and explore rather than a full planet.

Except not really because you can only land at specific points and there is no way to travel across the planet with ease. You got to walk.

Calling it now, Todd is lying again. He's going to claim you can explore the entire planet but it's going to be a few zones with some content near the landing zone, then just endless randomly generated emptiness for the rest of it.

They are both using the same method of generating planets though. It's just procedural generation (which results in boring as frick landscapes) with a few prefabricated pieces placed around.
Outside of a few designed set pieces, this is all Starfield will be. And lets face it. Bethesda are not known for designing interesting dungeons. They're usually a winding corridor with a shortcut back to the entrance once you get the treasure chest at the end.

Completely unrelated, you're taking someone's frick up as a rule of thumb. NMS at least tried to do something new and different, Starfield is a game I feel I already played before.

People here actually think Starfield will have amazingly detailed planets full of shit to see and explore. Reality is it will work the same way as Mass Effect. You will land and have a small area to explore. Outside of this area will either be in accessible, or just randomly generated terrain with nothing in it.

He's not boasting about it cause there's no reason to do it. You use your ship to get around long distances, but he literally HAS described the landscape of planets as being made of tiles that "wrap around" the planet. There's only evidence for it, not against.

Mass Effect makes you visit predefined locations, with quite small levels apart maybe from ME3. You're not flying your ship either, and the Mako is trash.

Skyrim sold 30 million more copies after 2016, FO76 was released in 2018 so it's safe to assume people will erase it from their memory, especially as most people were already filtered by a multiplayer fallout before even trying it.

Are you shitting me? ME1's exploration was so damn bad they stripped it out in ME2 and it drastically improved the game. Every single Bethesda game has better free roam exploration than ME1. Literally every single one, even fricking Terminator. Bethesda's development pipeline has been purpose-built specifically for that sort of game. That's why they're miles ahead of everyone else in exploration gameplay but playing catchup on everything else.

It's everyone's frickup cause it's two conflicting design goals. Look at how Star Citizen's development has ground to a halt because they keep trying to combine the two.

"you land on a planet, you clip a rock, your ship explodes"

GRV is your FTL engine. Giving it more power means less time to go into FTL flight to escape from an enemy. So depending on the situation, you may give more power to your engines to outrun someone, or more power to your weapons to hit harder.

no risk, i can just return it within 7 days, if not longer. also they arrive free shipping because how much they cost, and can return free

None of them see Starfield as a threat. Even the Armored Core 6 trailer got more views in a week than Starfield did in a fricking month. Baldurs Gate 3 has sold over 10 million copies in less than a week and has instantly become one of the highest concurrent player count games on Steam while getting like a 96 on metacritic.

I mean, why wouldn't they just release their games now? Starfield obviously isn't doing shit to the sales/popularity of these games.

Correct, even FO4 if a more fun experience than most games coming out today, FO4's reveal was so good people had massive expectations, so they consider it a bad game because it wasn't the greatest thing ever like they wanted it to be.

Not gonna lie, Baldurs Gate 3 is about as close to doing it right as a game has come in a very long time. Bethesda games are always big open worlds but shallow as frick, while games with a lot of depth are almost always too narrow in scope. Baldurs Gate 3 did a good attempt at being somewhere in the middle, having good depth while also being reasonably wide.
It's not there yet and needs a lot of ease of use features, but it's a step in the right direction and I hope developers learn some lessons from it.

It's not even ambitious though. No Mans Sky does it but better. More planets, bigger planets, can fly between them, can fly down to planets and back into space. Has base building (can even build a town and run a colony), has dungeons and loot and everything else Starfield has but to an infinitely larger scale.
It's not even the most ambitious Bethesda game. Daggerfall will have a larger play area than all of the 1000 planets in Starfield combined do and Daggerfall ran in fricking MS DOS.

              better engine

              better waifus
              better exploration
              better music

              better graphics

No Mans Sky has a better engine.
              More guns.
Doesn't need stealth archer being the only good play style.
              Has world building.
              Has spaceship building and customization.
Not sure it needs waifus but that granny isn't someone I want to romance.
No Mans Sky has billions of planets that are fully explorable.
Haven't heard the music so you can't just say it's better.
No Mans Sky has plenty of mods.
              Graphics are subjective.

Can you do any of this in Starfield?
Fly your ship to any point on a planet and land/take off?
              Build an underwater base?
              Build a space base?
              Build up a colony?
              Play with friends?
Tame and breed pets in a complex system that involves genetics?

There is only two combat play styles at best, shooting and launching grenades.

No it doesn't. You can build a base on your freighter, can't build the ship you fly on and even the color customization is lesser in NMS

Wow it's like there's a compromise to be made between detail/content and the scale of a flat surface with the same repeating texture.

The same few copy/pasted buildings and a couple of 2D sprites for items, trees and lampost.
Do you genuinely believe this is computationally intensive compared to trying to have individual high poly buildings and objects scattered all around the streets? Are you comparing 2D sprites with 3D objects and how both are rendered?

I'm not laughing, I'm asking if you have any idea what you're talking about. Again it's a compromise with scale and detail. Drawing a repeating surface with the same texture costs virtually nothing and that's why 1990s hardware could do it (remember Delta Force had repeating terrain using voxels, meaning you could walk forever out of the mission area). Repeating the same few 2D sprites and very low res house models is how most games tried to give you a sense of scale.

It's geometry gets more complex with every update and can generate wildly different looking planets.
Flying around a planet is boring filter? So what is a loading screen?
No Mans Sky has literal colony sim mode. Not just place a few buildings and NPCs come. You manage a colony like some sort of simulation game.
No Mans Sky has had procedurally generated dungeons for like 3 years now. They include exploration, puzzles, enemies to kill and loot to gather.

This is untrue, Cyberpunk had lots of shitposting leading up the release, it's where the Shazam meme started. Ganker was very concerned about the Keanu Reeves voice acting, the vehicles and apparent dumbing down of the RPGs elements.

      Anonymous

I don't think you really know what it means. Literally anyone making large areas of landscape will procedurally generate it, rather than handcrafting valleys and mountains. It actually looks more realistic if its procedurally generated. Its also not randomly generating the planets "ingame", its premade using generation and every person will see the same worlds with the same landscape.

        >Its also not randomly generating the planets "ingame", its premade using generation and every person will see the same worlds with the same landscape.

What you say makes no real sense nor difference, it's all randomly generated except every player derives his world generation from the same seed.

          Anonymous

You still dont understand. Lets say you are creating a world in a game. Are you gonig to hand model valleys and mountains and little craggy bits? Have you any idea how fake that would look? Procedural generation looks more realistic, because the actual real world is procedurally generated. Take a tree for example. It grows according to a "procedure". The trunk grows to a certain point then splits. The branches grow to a certain point then split again, etc etc. With many envornmental factors it essentially makes every tree "random" but with a similar basic structure. A forest in a game that used procedural generation would look more realistic than taking "tree_model_1" and plonking that around 2000 times in an area. Procedural terrain generation is better than handcrafting it, especially if you want 1000 planets. The terrain is procedurally generated, in studio, and then the world that is created is "saved" and that is put into the game. Its a better way to do it than attempting to hand model multiple entire planets and make them all look different.

            Anonymous

            >You still dont understand.
I do, what you try to explain is obvious to everyone but you. Just this part:
            >The terrain is procedurally generated, in studio, and then the world that is created is "saved" and that is put into the game.
            Show how clueless you are.

Just understand that no one quite disagrees with you, what you say just makes no sense because it works differently from what you think.

              Anonymous

Thats exactly how it is. You are not loading the game and it is generating a bunch of planets, they are already made and in the game. There will be some random placement of things like an enemy base in a random place, but the worlds are already made and in the game before you start.

                Anonymous

                >the worlds are already made and in the game before you start
You underestimate the amount of data it represents. That's not how it works, that's not how it worked for close to 20 years. You just have the same seeds used for generating the same worlds, but don't think every planet is hard coded, you have no fricking clue.

                Anonymous

I don't know how it works but ultimately the point is that it won't give you a bunch of different planets every time you play, but the same planets in every game

                Anonymous

You're only trying to argue because you don't quite understand how it works and think there's a disagreement. That's why I told you no one disagrees with you.

                Anonymous

The disagreement then is that "procedural generation = bad". I disagree with that, in terms of natural environments. Hand-crafted natural things look fake as frick, procedural is the better way to make convincing terrain.

                >Hand-crafted natural things look fake as frick
Disagreeable, there's no such axiom. It's all about skill, and both skill and algorithms can be improved and used together.

In terms of terrain and such, I think so. Also can you imagine some poor c**t having to make 1000 worlds by hand carving cliffs and lakes and shit

It's actually doable, in fact. The issue with modern computer operators is that they don't use more ergonomic ways to operate computers. They're still stuck on mere keyboards.
Perhaps it's in part due to generalized pc form factor that stuck since when, 60s or 80s? Mouse, keyboard, etc.
Through more intelligent control systems, with integrated math systems, and smart automation, it's possible to dispense with the need to sit in front of a monitor, and no longer be limited to an analogue of writing an immense magnum opus a letter at a time.

there isnt. just to skip ahead a post or two, ill just ask now: how does there not being any new decent engines change starfield looking terrible because its built on an ancient engine? if there was a good modern engine, what difference would it make. to starfield, specifically. does garbage become a 5 star meal if theres no alternative? or is it just....garbage.

                Anonymous

Ahh there's no good modern engines and the old are also bad too. Actually everything is bad. All engines ever used for the past 10 years are bad. You know what I think you just might be moronic

no, the old ones are good, for their time. i still play them. its kinda weird you made that assumption out of the blue, completely unprompted. kinda sounds like cope.

                Anonymous

So what is your barometer for a good modern engine. You say there isn't one and using a old modified one is bad for some reason so what does this "good engine" have to do to meet your standards

                Anonymous

well, more features, better performance, not restricted by any old quirks, code thats not optimized primarily for ancient hardware, id probably go with those. but, let me refer you to the question i already asked. ill just copy and paste it for you so you dont need to scroll up. oh, and and its not "some reason", the reason is "it looks bad"
                >ill just ask now: how does there not being any new decent engines change starfield looking terrible because its built on an ancient engine? if there was a good modern engine, what difference would it make. to starfield, specifically. does garbage become a 5 star meal if theres no alternative? or is it just....garbage.

                Anonymous

Okay here's the answer to your question it is, what's the point in harping on the engine if it doesn't matter then. It's bad that they're using a modified old engine, but there is also no good modern engine too. It sounds moronic. Leads to your barometer for a "good engine" being also moronic
                >"more features"
                what features, be specific
                >"better performance"
what better performance, that can mean anything, be specific
                >not restricted by old quirks
this is any new engine, well that's not true they would also have to make their own programming languages, tools, and OS to not be restricted by "old quirks" of any kind
                >code thats not optimized primarily for ancient hardware
ancient can mean anything you have to give a time frame, 5 year old or 10 year old hardware can be called ancient and how does this even hold back an engine from being good. Ideally a good engine would be vastly scalable
Really all you said for an engine to be good is it has to be "more good", utter moron speak

Tbh I'm just planning to play BG3 for the time being. I know the systems, voice acting and story is going to be weaker in Starfield in every possible way and I'm not willing to waste my time with it just yet.

That's not wasted, those lines will serve as a dataset to train the AI and give endless content.

AI voices only work with English (language of dogs).

Thankfully Bethesda is one of the few devs that provide Glorious Nippon language packs.
If you didn't play Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Cyberpunk 2077 with Japanese voices I pity you.

          Racism is cringe.

also they do voice generation in other languages now too

Unlike the talentless parasites larping as "voice actors" in the west, Japanese Seiyū will not be so easily replaced.

I never bought a single Bethesda game and I never will.
However I did donate to Japanese and Korean Skyrim modders.

It's going to be funny how rabid Snoys get as the Starfield release date approaches. This thread is already a comedic goldmine of raging, disinfo, concern trolling. We've got most of a month to go still too.

More people play FO4 than 3 or NV.

Dude, it's a Bethesda game, of course it's pathetic and will be absolutely mediocre. Won't stop morons from buying it and fervently defending it from criticism though. I can already see the "I'm having fun therefore it's good" arguments.

You have to remember the fanbase. Its going to be like Elden Ring where it isnt fun but everyone tells themselves it is so it just becomes true. Battlebit style.

But it will be fun and good

Elden Ring is fun though. Starfield will avoid its trappings by being more random. Even Skyrim and FO4 avoided it with random events and radiant that led you to different starting dungeons. FO4 added random elements to dungeons as well. On my second survival playthrough of FO4 I assumed I could just breeze through Olivia but the game threw molerats strapped with mines at me
