I mean you're not technically wrong if we're excluding indie games. However, we can use the example of half life 2 to demonstrate why you might be wrong in this specific context. If half life 2 had not been leaked before being reworked, it could have shipped in its original state. While this may have led to poor reviews and fewer overall sales, it likely would not have affected the initial sales based on hype. If the developer is only concerned with the initial hype sales and doesn't care about actually making a decent product (*ahem*), then a leak would objectively have hindered that goal.
