if BG3 was selling so well, why dont they report the numbers? Even 5 million is a massively impressive milestone for any CRPG and yet nothing.

Because it's Larian and they never give concrete numbers on how much a game sold. At best we get rough estimates based on what Sven says. He mentioned DOS2 sold roughly 2 million copies when they did one of their last big DOS2:DE patches, and he's mentioned that BG3 sold "roughly as much as DOS2" during the EA period, so you can infer it sold roughly 2 million copies during EA.

That said the Belgian Embassy in China posted some weird shit on the china-twitter that said the game sold 5.2million copies on Steam alone

No, It's probably true. Starfield was played on Game Pass for 15 bucks. Bauldar's gate is on Steam only, took months later to be on Playstation and months after that for it to be on Xbox. While starfield released on all platforms and on Xbox pass which is like 15 bucks to 1 buck (for first time users). So it's understandable why it'll be more played.

5 million copies sold on steam, 8 million on Xbox.
Seeing as how there's a steam sale going on and the complete achievement rate has dropped, this meant that Starfield sold a ton of copies during this winter sale.

Many people consider Game Pass to be a no-brainer, by default it makes sense to subscribe to it, you'd have it even if Starfield didn't exist, thus Starfield is a "free" addition to the Game Pass library.

i don't think this means much, assuming it's true.

there are a ton of hour + videos on people being disappointed with starfield, and anger is far more engaging than anything else on social media. hell, i consume a lot of starfield content myself just because i like looking at the dumpster fire. shit, i actually had it on gamepass for a while because i wanted to see just how awful it is once i upgraded my computer.

something i noticed after new year's and with steam/twitch/spotify's end of year summaries is i can spend a lot of time with something that i don't necessarily like. if i have a resolution this year, it's to stop doing that.

point being, it's possible to dump a lot of hours into something you don't enjoy. also, i'm pretty sure a lot of normies/bethesda RPG fans really, really, really wanted this game to be good so they probably played a lot of it trying to find the gold nugget in the turd.

As a result of that their audiences heard about the game nonstop. And when the game finally did launch and all these content creators that have been talking about how the game is a scam for months/years bought it on day one and started playing it, their fanbase followed.

It is a perfect example of the irrelevance of how good or not a game is, or how good or not the marketing is for it, or how many awards a game gets. The only thing that's imporatant anymore is word of mouth from streamers/content creators and you're locked in.

Honestly despite it's critical acclaim, the advertised degeneracy had to have hurt BG3's sales in the long run for it to not even make it to the Top 10. People overestimate how much white consumers have actually broken away from religious practices that typically frown on homosexuality and sex with animals..

That being said I have played both. Just started BG3 but played through NG+++ Starfield (105 hrs) and I can say Starfield was a huge disappointment. I am a Bethesda fanboy. I still play modded FO3 and FO4. Hundreds hours into Skyrim on 4 different systems. Starfield is just way too safe and sanitary. Nothing cool. No risk. Too many essential NPCs. I'm not playing a role other than "good star guy." Maybe a pirate sometimes but literally nobody cares as long as you say sorry.

the only reason Starfield is ahead is because it was on gamepass with 30 millions subs.

Larian is an independent developer from a country without any videogame or hell cultural prestige (no such thing as a belgiaboo)
even taking into account it is a sequel to a highly acclaimed RPG, it's still utterly impressive for them and humiliating for Bethesda that their game is even in the same ballpark of sales as Starfield

And while BG2 is rightfully considered a classic of the genre, also remember the game is 23 years old at this point an entire generation of gamers was born after it was released and the generation before them was too young at it's release to have played it properly

and course, on top of that you have the fact Starfield was on gamepass

Larian is an indie studio run like a AAA studio. Bethesda is a AAA studio run like an indie studio. Sven is a brilliant studio head that manages and runs the studio of 2000 people while heavily outsourcing to as many talented people as possible. Meanwhile Todd Howard's Bethesda is a small tightknit group of friends that have been around since morrowind, too old and too incompetent to learn anything new and too arrogant to outsource their games to proper talents.

In the end Bethesda is a prime example of how you shouldnt run a studio and how out of date and incompetent Bethesda is compared to every other studio out there.

        Anonymous

bethesda outsourced to a truckload of pajeets, go look at the s(t)arfield credits...calling it a "tight-knit" studio is a joke.

Tight-knit studios produce kino eveyr time. Starfield is soulless, talentless trash because of outsourcing

          Anonymous

I know the credits, Bethesda is more alike to gamefreak to any other studio right now. BG3 has more pajeets working on it than Starfield did and yet it became GOTY. It's just Bethesda is just full of old people who are one foot in retirement. When you have the same head programmer since morrowind, what can you expect from someone like that when making a new game? not much at all.

think what he's hinting at is that rather than making effort to properly outsource to other quality studios, they instead believe they can just fix everything themselves and outsource to the cheapest possible people thinking of them as just busywork

          Anonymous

When you can outsource games like Elden Ring and Baldur's gate 3 to pajeets and win GOTY, they are not the problem. It's just Bethesda being a shit studio run by shitty old white people.

Because BG3 mindbroke Ganker, much like Elden Ring, and TLOU2, and TORTanic and tons of other games have. As a result the shitposting is off the charts.
Starfield is the opposite, no one expected it to be as awful as it actually was, even the most dedicated haters were shocked by how bad it was, so of course Ganker is going to dog pile on.

As for why no one talks about the gameplay, no one talks about the gameplay in 90% of threads on Ganker, which is why this board is fricking awful. It's always just coomer bait nonsense, meta-narrative nonsense about drama surrounding a game or the localization, or troony drama surrounding announcements and new characters/ips.
The phenom of not talking about the games the threads are about isn't exclusive to SF or BG3, not by a fricking long shot.

Also there are (or were, at least) legitimate threads where people talked about both games in depth, but they're well past that point on Ganker since the games are months old at this point so all thats left is shitposting

I beat BG3 last night. It was fun, my enchantment wizard ended up with a spell save DC of 23, so I was able to make the dragon dance for my amusement. I'm playing through BG1 for the first time as an enchanter and getting my ass beat, but it's even more fun. Was I not supposed to get a full party of 6 before entering the mines? The encounters are really hard.

      Anonymous

Based. You are meant to get get a full party of 6 in BG1 before Nashkel even if you do nothing but the story. PC, Imoen, Xzar, Montaron, Jaheira, and Khalid. You could've told one of the pairs to frick off though, I guess.

        Anonymous

I see. I have Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc and Khagain right now. Maybe I just need to get used to AD&D mechanics, but I've been resolving every combat encounter by casting sleep and sending everyone except my wizard to go stab the monsters. It hasn't been going well, but I managed to clear the mines after a lot of quicksaving. I think I'll explore some of the areas to try and reach level 2 before doing anything else.
I will say, the anons in the bg3 threads were right, real time with pause is pretty cool. It's a lot harder than turn-based, but I'm really enjoying it.

          Anonymous

Early game/low levels can be rough. I also had to resort to tactics that felt very gimmicky to get through some fights, but I've come to realize that is probably just the way it is meant to be played.

          Anonymous

Also, enjoy the difficulty/fight improvisation while it lasts. By the time I was halfway through BG2, I was powerful enough to steamroll every encounter with point and click physical damage dealers and repetitive spell casters. Not the game's fault I'm a completionist and outleveled everything, but the combat did become a lot more monotonous.
