ok look, there's some things that can't just be directly classified with straight numerical or ordered methods. A ship's performance, for example, is entirely dependent on how you equip it, and what role it's meant to play on the battlefield. You can get an Onslaught, but if all you do is equip it with medium ballistic weapons and try to use it as a point-defense platform it's not gonna be too good.
That being said:
S-tier:
Eradicator -- Role: attack cruiser, tank, point-defense. (DO NOT USE PIRATE VARIANT: REMOVES THE ACCELERATED AMMO FEEDER)
-Amazing firepower thanks to AAF, plenty of medium ballistics to cause damage, enough flux to work on it. Be careful because shields are not great, and vulnerable to being flanked
Fury -- Role: Fast attack cruiser, hunter-killer, escort.
Excellent shields when you kit it out, excellent mobility for a cruiser, can be exceptionally dangerous in player hands, watch out though, it's a bit fragile if the shields are out.
Eagle -- Role: All-rounder, long-range support
3 medium energy slots that can focus on the same target can output good pressure, together with 3 medium ballistics, while also keeping good mobility thanks to maneuvering jets and a good shield; it's role will change drastically depending on what weapons you put in the medium energy slot.
Falcon(P) -- Role: Missile support
4 medium missile slots, +2 small ones. That is a lotta fricking missiles. Obviously requires a properly equipped officer, but the damage output potential can be ABSURD. In player hands, it's arguably the most fun cruiser I've ever played. Equip it with all anihilators for overwhelming almost anything it faces, but careful, AI struggles with using missiles right.
pirate variant is still pretty good with its lower DP and burn drive to quickly get in combat
I find it better for chasing down smaller ships or quickly getting into brawling range
A-tier:
Gryphon -- Role: Missile support (obviously)
Try to keep it with an officer using missile spec and system exp for maximum missile spam. Equip LRMs for long range support, stick them in the middle of your fleet and you have a big source of firepower that can't (and shouldn't) be attacked by the enemy. Just 2 with their squalls can cause just about any capital ship to start retreating because of shield pressure. Keep in mind, AI struggles with staying away from the enemy. Give it escorts if you don't want to constantly babysit them.
Falcon(normal) -- Role: Fast cruiser, harassment
One of the fastest cruisers in the game for a modest amount of deployment points. Simultaneously, not too much firepower, not too much flux stats. Good for kicking destroyers away, also dunking on frigates, but it struggles with facing other larger cruisers or capital ships, so don't let it do that. It's still in A-tier because it's generally capable, and the AI handles it pretty well. That being said, the pirate variant outshines it a lot.
Heron -- Role: Carrier(obviously)
3 fighter bays for 20DP. 80 top speed. 0.8 shield flux/damage. Good, good, and good. As a carrier, it can project a large amount of firepower by sending 3 fighter wings of anything to anywhere while using its system that increases said fighter's damage, while also having the speed to accompany your fleet or turn tail and run reliably. Naturally being a carrier you don't want it on the frontlines, but the shield efficiency is always welcome. Still, a bit expensive to deploy at 20DP.
Aurora -- Role: attack cruiser, hunter-killer
Imagine the fury. OK, now make it bigger. Yeah. More damage, better shields, more flux. Slower, More DP cost. I put it in A because I don't think the 50% increase in DP cost is particularly worth it, and the fury can equip the same amount of medium missiles, so yeah. By no means a bad ship, but overshadowed by its smaller sibling. That being said, the AI can handle this one better.

I'm not sure it's AI controlled. That being said, don't knock ECCM out because of using reapers. +25% top speed and maneuverability means it accelerates faster to reach a greater top speed, meaning significantly less time for enemy PD to intercept it, as well as less trouble to lead the shot.
Also, ships that "shouldn't" get hit by missiles is always a toss-up. Particularly the gryphon is not very fast to get away if shit goes sideways or it goes full moron and decides to advance to the frontlines.
The cyclone reaper launcher description says that it accelerates it to full speed before it leaves the launch tube but I suppose it applies to the small ones. I think it's stupid to put 1 OP missiles (small reapers) on the ship with missile autoforge and integrated expanded missile racks though, especially if you are also taking ECCM package.
And even if this is a player controlled mega torpedo killer ship, wouldn't you want sabots instead of harpoons on the side so you can pressure shields? There's not much to torpedo otherwise and using harpoons for shield pressure instead of sabots is just stupid. Probably take a hypervelocity driver in the medium ballistic too.

Apogee -- Role: none lmao
Ok, to be honest, the Apogee is a quirky kid. As the description itself states, it's basically a glorified exploration ship equipped with guns and missiles. That being said, it's exactly what you should be using it for. It's not gonna be particularly combat effective, but a large energy and missile mounts give it some bite. It'll work.
Champion -- Role: medium cruiser, tank.
Jack of all trades, master of none. It's not too slow, pretty well-armored for a midline cruiser, good shields, good weapon mounts. That being said, exactly because of that it's hard to get an officer on it that makes a particularly large difference. The large missile and energy mounts are nice, I guess. Don't try to use it as long-range support. It has those features for a reason.
Venture(also applies to the pirate and LP variants) -- Role: Also none, lol
Much like the Apogee, the Venture is a ship that you buy more because of its logistical uses than military ones. One fighter bay, 2 medium missiles and fast missile racks give it some decent enough bite to fend off pirates, but you mostly keep it for the surveying equipment and decent cargo capacity. A bit on the slow side, but It'll also work.
Doom -- Role: phase cruiser
I don't use phase ships lmao, but I hear they're pretty good.

Pretty ok for player control, but the AI is gonna struggle to use reapers right, and particularly thanks to that equipment, it's gonna try and get close to the enemy. Could be dangerous.

Grendel -- Role: light phase cruiser
It's a low-tech, ballistic-focused phase ship with AAF. It's original, if nothing else. Decently low DP cost, but again, I don't use phase ships.
Eradicator(P) -- Role: tank, I guess?
Imagine an eradicator. Ok, now hit its arms with a baseball bat until they break. Cool. Now give it roller skates.
If I'm not being particularly charitable it's because I hate it and think it should die in a fire. The AAF makes a PHENOMENAL difference to the Eradicator, particularly with a sys exp. officer, and changing it to Burn Drive feels like a monumental downgrade. Even the -6 DP cost is not enough to compensate for the loss in firepower, imo. Still, it's pretty tanky and the medium ballistics are still there, even if they're no longer the beasts they could be.
D-tier:
Mora -- Role: battle-carrier (yes, you heard me)
Take a Legion, now make it shitty. It would be less dissappointing if that were it, but as if that's still not enough, the damper field systems completely frick it over.
It's sluggish as frick, has poor flux stats, decent hull and armor and a serviceable omni-shield, but that won't save it from any enemy given its similarly mediocre weapon mounts. All this for 20 DP. The only "saving grace" is that it has 3 fighter bays, but that won't do much on its own with every other shitty thing about it.
please pick a heron instead.
Dominator -- Role: Heavy cruiser,weapons platform, capital ship escort
It is SO SLOW. It is literally the same speed as a Legion. You know. A capital ship. Nearly all front-facing weapon mounts, including 3 medium missiles and 2 large ballistics makes for a formidable ordnance package, if only it weren't sloth-like mobility-wise. Just about any other cruiser except maybe the eradicator or the less fortunate carriers can outmaneuver it. Serviceable shields with a small arc given its size. The AI also definitely struggles to make use of it because its turn rate is so bad. (cont)
(cont.) It's only a threat when its flanks are protected by a capital ship and/or other cruisers, but the AI sucks at doing that well.
F-tier:

I only give a single shitty little star to the mk2 for having the large missile mounts, because those are kinda cool and can be used at extreme ranges.

my beloved anon. the reaper IS the shield pressure. Ok, tbqh, the cyclone launcher genuinely *does* work as shield-breaker against most things smaller than a capital. 2 reapers directly to shields is pretty heavy damage. While technically not enough to overload many cruisers, it's only slightly away from that. At which point the harpoons, small slots, or other allied ships can finish the work. Still, it's *very* dependent on a player knowing how to use it like that.

Turns out there's a 0.96a version. I installed it, and here's my brief observation report using the recommended parameter and all.

I've run into zero issues with that java 23 update so far and I use a lot of mods too. 60 fps on normal speed, about 30-40 on on x2 Hell, I can actually reload a save now without restarting the fricking game.

As returning player who comes with each major Starsector update, i was postponing my first save for this mod update but i did tested stuff with SCVE the last 2 weeks and i really like the changes, especially the ones to the Reisen (Deployment points and monthly supplies matching each other to satisfy my OCD + reduction of DP because the closest vanilla analogue was the Onslaught and yet that ship was nearly as expensive as Paragon and Invictus while the Novemember variant surpassed those even)
Really excited to try this mod since this will by my first time (Also with Iron Shell, AOTD, RAoT and of course the brand new Knights of Ludd mods)
Also the addition of UAF Destroyers is very welcome, especially since Alex gave us that new Escort Package to encourage Destroyers in general
Make sure to try out the Java 23 "mod", it massively improves battle fps

Found a radiant and idk what to do with it. Just slapped 4 tachyon lances and a reality disruptor on it, but it's lacking in PD. Is that and a XIV onslaught good enough to fight the luddic church and persean blockade?
Ive also got 2 apogees, 2 Sunders, 5 omens a tempest and a wolf for support.

This. Astrals are good, you just have to force them to get close to the enemy. Pairing them with a big meat shield sponge battleship is how you use Astrals. Gravitons also aren't as bad as a choice for medium beams since they now debuff shields. So putting those on with your Squalls and some burst PD and you have a great support ship to shit bombers.
Only issue with the Radiant is that they'll phase skim away from its escorts.
funny thing you mentioning graviton beams. i have exactly those on my astrals too. but no PD though, modded fighters are a b***h and they take too much OP.
say, doesn't ITU increase missile range too? or should i put a PDAI there with pd guns?
ITU is just ballistics and energy, but with gravitons and burst pd it's still good and squalls already have a long range. PDAI would make the burst pd not shoot at decoys since charges on the burst lasers are in short supply when it comes down to swarms, but that's in cases you go up against missile and fighter heavy fleets, so an option but not necessary. Expanded Missile Racks is obvious, makes those squalls last twice as long. ECCM could be useful for the squall spam, but most of its bonuses are wasted; with the exception of s-mod bonus, that range from ignoring ECM is VERY good against Remnant fleets, but like with PDAI it's up to you. Advanced turret gyros, s-mod that and your burst pd is golden, it also counteracts the turn rate debuff from the built in Advanced Optics.
Overall I'd use 5 burst pd (3 up front, 2 in rear medium mounts), 3 gravitons, and the squalls. Burst PDs are strong enough to swat frigates at least. Put only enough vents on to cover flux
Officers need to have systems expertise to make the most use out of the recall device, Elite Missile Spec for the squalls since it's their core support weapon, the Astral relies on shields for protection so Field Modulation is a given, and Target Analysis lets you squeeze extra power out of those squalls.

it’ll have its own line of ships and weapons and its ships are bonused in using its faction’s own weapons but they suffer a lot when you try to equip other weapons, and the ships themselves aren’t really good outside of their designated role
also the faction’s home systems are like 15 light years away from the core worlds so you’ll have to go very far out of your way to find their stuff
oh and I forgot to mention but the faction will also probably have reskins of vanilla ships despite them already having their own line of ships
oh and they have AI cores at their planets, which also produce unique commodities that aren’t fully integrated
and they have plenty of scripts for their weapons that don’t actually do anything worth the performance decrease
also the ships are powerful but that’s ok because they’re balanced out with above average maintenance and price
and to top it all off the ship weapon layouts are all either painfully generic and boring, or really awkward and lopsided

- a good chunk of content is from your own exploration outside the predefined map, which has interesting secret/mystery and challenge
- you can establish your own faction in those new lands, planet colonization, and fight off anyone without having to crawl your way up as any faction's servant
- lots of mods to expand on the vanilla game without having to rely on total conversion mods.
- lots of customizations for your spaceships, from weapon to ship modifcation, which can change the way its played dramatically
- end game challenges are quite good on vanilla, mods can provide harder challenge too
- game runs well on potato machine
and finally, a great thing about starsector is that you can participate in this community and see the mentally ill drama due to this dedicated and vibrant modding community

I don't play with random seeds, I use console commands to check seeds a bunch of times for good systems, without looking at the name or map position so I don't know where they are in the sector. When I find one that's got at least one habitable, one secondary organics source (due to the new Luddic Majority thing, I like to not mine on my primary habitable), a vacuum planet and a gas giant (or top quantity volatiles cryovolcanic), I save it.
Then later when I'm ready to play I take one of the saved seeds and use it. I don't want to spend a long time getting invested in the play through and then find out there are no good systems.

If you used the medium reaper missiles on the medium slot I honestly think that you could still handle bigger targets by cracking through their shields with repears then fragging them to death
S-mod the expensive hullmods and you'd have more than enough OP to swap swarmers for reapers. In testing the only times its ever gotten high on flux is when surrounded by fighters, bombers, and missiles almost constantly, and shooting the TPUs on top of that. While fluxxed there is a noticeable drop in firepower, but not enough to let any torps or harpoons through. The benefit of shield shunt in this case is to ignore any risk of being overloaded and caught with your pants down, and resistant flux conduits/repair units/armored weapon mounts means that those guns are going to keep firing with minimal downtime and curb the EMP meme.
It blows ballistic rangefinder doesn't increase flak range. The TPUs do have a ridiculously long range for pressuring shields and making gays back off.
This but change the tiny rockets totorpedos or harpoons so that you can hurt larger targets when their shields are down.

Basically. The thought is to tank replacement rate of enemy carriers and missile stocks vs factions that spam fighters and missiles. As an armor/hull tank it's going to get worn down eventually, though reinforced bulkheads could make it last longer and buffed elite combat endurance can be viable for staving off attrition. Devastators can put down frigates that get close as it's explosive damage, and as an AOE weapon that doesn't rely on direct hits it can reach around shields. It's not optimal in any sense (a single HIL sunder can be the death of it), I just thought a hyper specialized meme build could be effective in this one niche. I also enjoy seeing the maximum possible bullet density being vomited from a ship where there's enough projectiles to be a shield.
If you were fighting other players it would be one thing but the AI doesn't play by the same rules the player does across the board. That said, usually my carriers are set up as long range harassers or PD boats and they work great for fricking up and distracting the enemy. Just don't expect to suddenly not see strikecraft at all in a fight.

They don't really hit my fps at all though? Combat can be a bit laggy with a lot of individual units and stuff on screen but I don't really have a problem even with a slightly larger sector. I just like the clouds.

Other than once in awhile I don't use speedup. Mostly end up using it waiting on a colony to construct something or similar. Of course you're going to lag in speed up mode. Thats down to how the game was made.

I get around 35-40 FPS in Hyperspace, Normal Sized Sector, X4.0 speed with SpeedUp, using the Mikohime mod and the Java Dedicated GPU fix. Yes, I have hyperspace stormclouds enabled and untouched.
I'm playing on a laptop with a i7 CPU, 32GB of RAM, and a RTX 2026.

in lunalib settings you can disable the most overpowered ships they got but the system is still impossible for any faction capture even if all other factions invade them at the same time they will lose

Sometimes people get too in the weeds of "well theres a mod for that!" or "you can fix it by doing this." Nice to have the ability obviously to do corrective surgery to a game though.
There's also Lunalib settings for it you can change on the fly. You can tweak a lot of things without needing to frick with mod settings, just don't forget to click save.
Any mod is made better by having settings like that. It's a single player game, why shouldn't we be able to tune it to our exact preferences?

The artillery stuff sounded like a cool idea when I first tried it as long range attacks on the map level was a mod idea I thought of prior (basically nuclear torpedos on bootlegged shuttle hulls launched from fleets), but yeah IE artillery turned out to be shit, good concept bad implementation.

Or partially scuttle a ship, so it gains a d-mod and I get % of the scuttle value as supplies. Industry perk would be reworked to cost supplies so it's not exploited for free resources.

More Military Missions moment. The mod rewards you too much for too little, plus the fact that you can pretty much summon an aggressive fleet of ANY faction that won't get the faction angry at you if it's destroyed means you can easily get late-game gear very early in the game.
I really like the idea of the mod but have decided not to use it in the end.
Convoy missions are a good idea too, but they pay too much just for 'security' and too little for carrying extra goods yourself. Plus raiders aren't always certain to come so it's very easy money to make.

Kang has a better Terra world but no gas giants and the volatile world is 275% hab.

Hegemony portraits are probably the hardest to adapt to new ones I think. It's not just the cap, you have to make sure that, if they have one, the belt is on the right side, as well s checking they have the right epaulets and uniform design in general. Other factions' portraits are much easier to work with I think because of their looser uniform standards I think.

This ship is controlled by the ai. Not myself. But most energy based projectile weapons are flux heavy, making them impractical on the conquerer. But with [redacted] weapons, they are more flux/damage efficient.
The forward pd is very effective, mostly at disabling fighters and missiles. But large energy weapons act like PD anyway, I have yet to see this ship overwhelmed even when surrounded, cause everything around it is often disabled anyway.
Frick off, my Legion isn't meant for killing but for suppression and it does a dam fine job for what it costs.

S-modded Hardened Shields or Stabilized Shields?
Well, it clearly depends if you really need the Flux Capacitors of not. Stabilized Shields has the S-Mod bonus that converts a percentile of received Hard Flux into Soft Flux.
S-mod stabilized shields because it has a bonus and put the points into caps. Stabilized shields is very big on ships with large shield flux generation. Take the Paragon's shield upkeep flux: it's 750, SS is a 375 reduction in flux/s, for 15 OP. It's over twice as efficient as opposed to putting on vents to cover that upkeep.
Putting caps in place of Hardened Shields is a better option for the same cost because at the end of the day you're looking at total hard flux capacity, and you also have a higher base flux capacity as a buffer for weapons. If you have maxed out caps then you add HS to squeeze more performance out of the shield. HS is the flux coil equivalent of shields.
Hardened shields after you buff it in the core files because Alex is a frickstain.
Remember not to update your game.

i use the cheat mk2 neutrino detector which removes false readings so i know if there is something hidden in a system
I use sensors near every single stellar body to see if there might be something close by orbiting, but that's about it.

If it's a probe infested star cluster, I use neutrino scanner and try to locate all probes/survey ships/mothership. You'll get a lot of survey missions that will point you to things you might have missed anyway.

Does anyone use Hounds for combat? I found them all to be neat distractions at best. The SO chaingun/HMG hound is a funny build, but compared to a Lasher they're still not great. I found a better use for them with ECM package and Nav Relay so they actually provide a benefit to the fleet for their 3 DP, add a HVD so they can plink at shields once in a while.

The obvious thing is fleet command. Those sunders are doing absolutely frick all with those HILs sitting in the back and behind wrecks, move them with a waypoint order: also, swap iron cannons for literally any other beam weapon because it's too short range for the sunder. Redesign that Gryphon. If it's getting that close replace the forward weapons with reapers because dragonfires are a meme with their pathetic ammo count for a large slot, and get rid of those fricking gazers it does nothing for you and swap with breaches or gorgons if you want DEMs. Liberal use of EMP to disable their weapons and use cheap piranha bombers since that shitbox isn't moving out of the way. Get rid of the PD (emitter is already the best PD weapon period) and put an antimatter blaster on your omens so it forces them to get close to use their EMP emitter and alternate between cooldowns.

It just feels silly that story points are "lol you rolled a 20 and can do whatever you want" whenever you have to make a story decision.

What really sucks is that you then need story points for things you actually care about, aka building in hull mods, upgrading officers and improving your colony structures.
Then you realise how starved you are of SP, especially if you spend them on green options.

Hitting a hyperspace storm wrong and getting bounced into a remnant fleet you're not prepared for sucks, what sucks more is if you can't get away from it and end up wiped. So allowing an option to weasel out of a bad deal at a cost is a good thing. As these points can be sparse and have so many applications it forces you to think and spend them wisely. Spending them all on getting free raids without rep loss is fine and dandy until you realize you want to s-mod, or buff your colony, build an officer, or you found a XIV Legion with s-mods and it's only salvageable by spending a point. Yes it is silly you can perform "special maneuvers" to cleanly get out of an unwinnable fight, or convince some dude you're working under orders from Phil or Kanta, but you're not forced to spend them. It's plot armor to make up for bad luck and bad planning.
When you get into the mindset of "uh story points are a shit concept because it lets you handwave problems" you get Iron Shell greying out the option entirely and taunting you for mousing over it.
Ironman mode is meant for neets with too much time in their hands. It's virtually impossible to have anything bad happen to you by just playing the game on normal speed only

If you don't also alter the distribution of loot, remnants, derelicts, all that stuff, then it'll be very empty. It does result in a longer initial load of both the game itself and any new games you start, but once you're loading a save that's already underway there's no difference.

I think I might have overdone it with the number of stars per constellation here, but it's no big deal. I'll occasionally find stars on top of each other that look like they should be binary or even trinary systems but aren't, and are completely seperate.

Nebula color indicates constellation age, old constellations have more habitable planets. Yellow/orange suns are better for habitable planets. Black holes, neutron stars and nebulas are unlikely to ever be habitable.

Was certain that stealing the core would cause Sindra to declare total war and giving the core back would allow some mutually beneficial treaty.
How bad is dealing with relations after starting your own faction? Is it manageable or should you do all that you need to do before settling down?
You'll want to finish the gate storyline, have one Tri-Tach high level contact (part of the storyline), a fleet strong enough to reliably destroy a big fleet from each faction and at least one Phantom transport + 200 marines. If you're aiming for optimal endings, 10 Phantom transports + 2000 marines.
Start small and antagonize only one faction at a time.
No matter what you do:
Pirates will bother you the more unstable your colonies are. Their goal is to steal from you. You can bribe them away, higher up you bribe the more permanent the solution.
The others are conditional.
Persean League will bother you if you have a size 5 colony or 2 colonies with at least one as size 4. You can make a bunch of size 3s and they'll ignore you. Their goal is to force you to join them (vassalization and taxation). You can immediately surrender and eat 20% GROSS profit tax or you can make yourself more of a problem than you're worth.
Tri-Tach only cares about competitors in their markets, which is drugs, luxury goods, refined metals and supplies/armaments. They'll ignore you if you only produce ores, food and consumer goods. They'll raid your trade fleets if you produce anything else. Only way to get them to stop is to do something similar to them, need a high ranking Tri-Tach contact to seal the deal.
Ludd Church becomes a problem if you have farming or light industry. They start off as a bonus to stability, but then the knights get involved. Fight or talk to their leaders.
Sindar Diktat only cares about fuel production. 4+ causes them to freak out.
Pathers and Hegemony are well known.

Have you checked your lunalib settings? There's a flat modifier to rates, but that goes for all factions. Default is 0.

You don't actually need that much shit to have a net-neutral colony. If I find an early good low hazard world, I just rush it and administrate it myself. It can cover monthly expenses like a commission, just don't go too overboard until you get enough ships in fleet to deter medium-large hostiles

The concept is neat, but it's another ship system that hurts the ship in AI hands. The only acceptable time to use Termination Sequence is never as you throw away PD in exchange for 1200 energy damage + 500 emp damage. Not only does the AI spamming it tank their own replacement rate, but half the time it's wasted on nothing. I'd replace it with something like the Heron's Targeting Feed.
TS is a system that works better conceptually with Pathers, imagine a refit Pather Shepherd that uses it's drones as kamikaze bricks.
