Is it possible to have the weapons render beneath a ship's sprite?
Pic related, the black shit in the red circle is part of the arm that's currently being rendered above the ship.

aren't there like "detail" weapon mounts or something in the ship editor? i don't exactly remember but look at diable ships anyways. they have that stuff i'm pretty sure

you use a decorative mount with a higher render order, or handle it in a layered rendering script if you have really particular needs

Does the buckbreaker damage bonus also applies to pd against missiles and fighters laucnhed from Buckbroken ships?

      Anonymous

      >Does the buckbreaker damage bonus also applies to pd against missiles and fighters laucnhed from Buckbroken ships?
Your question is worded in a confusing manner:
Only the buckbreaker ship gets bonus damge, any fighters it launches do not gain the bonus.

The damage applies to the faction ships named, not to their weapons (missiles) or fighters, unless those fighters are from the named faction.

        Anonymous

My question was : if a UAF ship launches a missile at my ship, ship that has Daemon Slayer hullmod, will the pd of this ship deal 5x damage against said missile or not?

          Anonymous

          depends on the missile
UAF missile yes but a vanilla missile on a UAF ship no

I have an idea for a mod and I would appreciate your opinion on it.
Basically it's to make "difficult recovery" of a ship cost resources instead of a story point.

    >Why?
Story points are abundant early on and become increasingly rare as the game progresses. If you find a derelict Paragon at the start of a run, that one story point it might cost to recover is a meaningless cost. On the other hand you would never spend a story point to recover even a low tier capital if you already have a lot of good ships.

So my idea: Difficult recovery does not cost a story point, but instead gives the ship a "critical damage" hullmod which locks its CR to 0. This hullmod automatically repairs over time by consuming vendor trash resources like metal, transplutonics etc from your inventory, if you have them.
The total resource cost is based on the money value of the ship. Low tech ships require more metal, high tech ships require more transplutonics, ships with more weapon slots require more armaments, something like that.

This has a bunch of effects which I really like
    >difficult recovery of shitty ships becomes much cheaper than difficult recovery of good ships
    >vendor trash gets an actual use outside of selling it (I really like this in Nomadic Survival)
    >recovering a good ship early on is actually difficult
    >recovering a good ship might take time and active effort as you need to procure the specific resources
    >high tech ship resources (transplutonics and volatiles?) are actually kind of hard to come by in large quantities, unlike metal for low tech ships, which fits the theme of high tech ships being high maintenance and delicate machinery.

What do you (You) think? It will be coded by yours truly, shouldn't be too hard.

      Anonymous

you are autistic and obsessing over things that do not matter. fixing your current obsession would simply mean that you move on to another one, making it a waste of effort.

in this particular case, you are also confused about the time value of money (or rather, ships). of course a paragon now is better than a paragon later, and the marginal utility of another ship drops as your fleet grows. so what?

rather than adding depth to the choice of how to spend your story points, this change would remove it, turning something that requires a judgement call into a triviliaity that's just paying money with a lot of pointless complexity and busywork overlaid

      Anonymous

      >high tech ship resources (transplutonics and volatiles?) are actually kind of hard to come by in large quantities
      >volatiles
      >in large quantities
anyways let me just grab a few extra shepherds and strap mining equipment to all of my non-combat ships

      Anonymous

The real problem with your idea is it sounds like you've never actually done much combat in the game. What you're suggesting basically makes it even dumber to recover ships.

Star federation mod from FTL is the one i liked, San-iris and H.M.I mining faction are good too, especially for new weapons
they are balanced faction mods (FTL ships with built in hull mods may be stronger their peer abit, tho still glass cannon types)

If I install a mod mid playthough will loot from it turn up in mining/research stations? I just realized I forgot to install DIY planets, so none of the artifacts used to stop weather conditions were popping up, but will I get some now that I've installed it from research stations or do i just have to spam the quest in the bar?

I feel like D-mods should be more impactful. A ship with 5 D-mods is like... 70-90% as strong as a ship with 0, depending on the exact mods and the type of ship. If you have derelict operations, D-mods actually make your ships stronger per DP.

Pretty sure you're getting your cube mods confused. The one who's dev thinks hightech is gay is actually way more restrained somehow. They both have fighters that get LACs, but the ATDD+ one is a swarm of 0 OP flying turrets with a ton of health. The other mod has them at 7 OP per wing and weak enough for the whole wing to die to a flak cannon in like one shot.

I wouldn't mind his boner for squares and guns so much if he didn't ignore the fact that the derelict drones are ancient early gens compared to the last gen Guardians. More powerful derelict drones should be later gens and reflect that.

I think both the mods in question actually do that, with ATDD+ having the advanced ones be a bunch of mutants, and the other one, DEX I think, has some be mutants that were put together wrong and some be experimental designs that were given to the derelicts for testing.

That said, the Invictus is basically a giant middle finger to the idea that more advanced ships are always better, so you can't fault them for that.

Well yeah. Two Guardian and a bunch of Ramparts can easily overwhelm even Omega. You only need the right ship

The Guardian is super cheesable due to its' infinite missiles though, you could probably just wipe Omega with just it alone using the right build because of that.

Do wish the derelict mods did more with the Guardian. Its' not like Alex is ever going to expand on it in any meaningful way.

It's fine for the ships to be stronger because domain drones in vanilla really are trash, but the weapons completely invalidate every other large ballistic HE weapon.
And the fighters are best in slot too, with nothing stopping you from using them on non-automated ships. IIRC it's 10 OP for 3 fighters per wing, each having 2x light autocannon and 2x light mortar. That's an absurd amount of dps for what should be a weaker warthog

I mean look at this shit. So much range, dps, flux efficiency and an insanely high per shot damage making it very strong vs armor. There's never a reason to use a large HE ballistic other than these two.

Look at the weapon flux compared to the flux dissipation, you don't need a ballistic rangefinder to exhaust it. You're much better off putting heavy armor and armored weapon mounts on it, or even expanded missile racks or ECCM package.

Now that I'm reading it properly, the chance gets decreased (permanently) when you buy the survey data, so it's not that simple.
However a multiplier below 1 is ignored, so you can buy the survey data back once the faction has colonized a planet with no consequence.

              You could do this:
              1. sell a lot of survey data to a faction, which increases its survey multiplier by a lot
              2. wait for it to colonize a planet, which resets the survey multiplier to 1
              3. buy all the survey data back, which sets its survey multiplier to a really tiny value, but it gets treated as if it was 1 anyway
              4. wait for it to colonize again, which resets the multiplier
and repeat that, but it seems tedious.

you can look up the code yourself. you can read simple java, right?

If I'm reading this right, Nexerelin spawns one single colony fleet every 270 days. If you sell survey data to a faction, it increases that faction's chances of being picked for the colony.
So selling survey data does do something, it gives the faction additional colonies. But it doesn't affect which planet gets colonized, only which faction gets a colony.

Formal thought disorder (FTD) is also known as disorganized speech. Evidence of disorganized thinking, it is a hallmark feature of schizophrenia.[4][6] FTD, a disorder of the form (rather than content) of thought, encompasses hallucinations and delusions[12] and is an observable sign of psychosis.
It can be subdivided into clusters of positive and negative symptoms and objective (rather than subjective) symptoms.[13] On the scale of positive and negative symptoms, they have been grouped into positive formal thought disorder (posFTD) and negative formal thought disorder (negFTD).[13][12] Positive subtypes were pressure of speech, tangentiality, derailment, incoherence, and illogicality;[13]

antipsychotics can also be used to treat your AGP, incidentally

Actual victory conditions that give you something to work towards. The early and mid game of Starsector are really fun and it would be nice if there was a way to just wrap that up and move on to the next run.

I see people complain about the lack of endgame in Starsector but I think that's an unsolvable problem.
At some point you will just have the single best or most fun to pilot flagship with the best weapons, combined with a fleet that is already capable of beating anything in a game. And I think at that point, what you really need is a formidable challenge which ends the run. Maybe make it varied depending on your actions in the run. Maybe add some kind of metaprogression across runs like starting with a special ship (frigate / destroyer level, nothing strong) on your next run, just to kind of tie it in together you know.

I'd like a logistics ship that's basically a prison barge for keeping sex slaves in, that your crews can visit to rape captured female UAF personnel and such. When fully stocked up the logistics ship would give a bonus reduction to your fleet's supply consumption & fuel usage, representing your crew's heightened morale improving their work ethic and quality standards, leading to less waste and better efficiency.

what about the cost of shuttle maintenance and fuel just to constantly ferry personnel between the barge and the rest of the fleet

        Anonymous

Represented by the ship's own upkeep costs. I would envision this being a large ship, about the size of an Atlas, so it's not something you'd take with a small fleet, it'd be more of a lategame unit.

          Anonymous

wouldn’t it be more efficient to just distribute the prisoners among your fleet
less shuttlefrickery, and you’re not putting all your eggs in one basket

I don't love that, but its what always happens on any general that has long stretches of nothing happening and a mod community, its what happens when people have nothing to talk about
At least if you ask a question you can still get answer, some generals are so insane you don't get even that anymore

The entire /vp/ board, no thread in particular just look at the catalog now and that's basically how it is all year, if you want the "General thread gone wrong" experience go there, specially when there's a dry spell of games not coming out soon

            Anonymous

            >if you want the "General thread gone wrong" experience go there
if you want a good example of that, look at the "/vp/ plays" threads
which are pretty much "<board> plays X" threads in name only
they don't even follow the same basic format of "one guy runs the game/thread while other posters provide peanut gallery commentary and make decisions when opportunities to do so happen" like they used to
it's now basically just a chatroom for tripgays and schizos that whine about an evil boogeyman who is responsible for pretty much anything bad (and well deserved) that happens to them (while blatantly making shit up), and they also seethe about people posting lots of dialog screenshots of a text-heavy game on an imageboard
certified insanity even by /vp/ standards

fun experiment if you're bored: go there, post an image of sandshrew/sandslash, and see how many of the schizos go into a meltdown over someone who got fed up with their shit

i think i should have been more specific considering there were both more games that were actually completed (or what could be considered completed enough due to not being fully released) and more handholding smut

but yeah pretty much everything after the (second) reborn LP ended up being garbage due to the newer, worse format

But hey, these are also people who gleefully crow about having 130 IQ while wasting their lives making subpar 3rd party add-ons for an obscure space sim, so them being dysfunctional maladusted schizos to a level anons can't hope to match is hardly surprising.

I don't actually care if Nia is trans or not and the mods are playable. I actually don't know why people make so huge deal of it as I am new to the community. If they are toxic to others? Sure - dick move, but I don't see it related to anything. As for the mods - Some are even enjoyable.

noah put hidden code in his mods that nerfs factions he don't like while actually fricking using "player" as a slur

That is a dick move. And honestly? I feel more of a "child" thing. Is that still in his mod?

            Anonymous

            >Is that still in his mod?
            The majority, yes.

He removed the code specifically targeting other mods after being called out but left the rest in. If you want a bit of perspective you can read what remains on the forum:
            https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=14935.msg362926#msg362926
If it seems short/fragmented just be aware Alex had to delete ~100 posts of back and forth with Noah arguing why his nerfs were intended/a good thing. Eventually someone mentioned Noah needs to a see a shrink and he used the mental health defense card to claim any criticism of his actions was triggering*. Hence why Alex went on his big purge.

*Noah has genuine, diagnosed, mental health issues.

              Anonymous

Mental health card is... I wouldn't say a legit thing on an online forum? Not a justification at least. Maybe it could explain some stuff but it is still 'yikes' tier.

I definitely see why Nia/Noah (that part I still do not understand) is so hated in the community.

At the very least... Any code targeting other mods seems like a dick move to me.

              Thanks for explaining anon.

                Anonymous

It's also important to understand that Noah basically exists in a state of permanent perpetual spergfit that he takes with him anywhere he goes, which is particularly of note because he actually frequents these threads, sanctimoniously sperging at even vague criticism while furiously denying his presence anonymously.

This creates a perfect storm for anons to blame any post they don't like in the thread on Noah, and then have a fair chance of actually being right.

                Anonymous

The Noah blame does feel a bit excessive at times but yeah, it does make way more sense now.

Kinda dug his own hole with his toxicity.

The final question would be if there is really that high concentration of trans people in Starsector or if it's just used as a slur in old net style from before snowflakes were so common?

                Anonymous

Almost every modding community for every game has been completely overrun with trannies over the past 3-4 years. Modding scenes are already hyper-autistic with truckloads of drama, so they fit right in.

I don't mind having cute girls in my game as long as they're reasonably sorta close to the artstyle. The OP image is fine, for example.

        Anything by Dazs

anything made by dazs alfonzo or thedragn
anything with mechs or faction "expanded"
anything with s-mods or hullmods in general like epta or special hullmods
        anything by boggled

        >dazs
Yeah that tracks, Ore Refinery is the only thing he had that looked appealing.
        >alfonzo
Even Luddic Enhancement? It's been a long time since I played and it was vanilla but I do remember the Luddites kind of sucking ass.
        >thedragn
High Tech Expansion looks cool but was actually the reason I initially made that post. Grabbed Apex too, anything wrong with those two?
        >anything with mechs
But I like mechs. I'm a little sad the UC Gundam mod seems to be dead, because even if I don't really want the EFSF and Zeon as factions the actual ships looked rad and shitting Kampfers all over everything sounds fun.
On that note I'm absolutely taking recs for any good mod with mecha shit in it.

Also is PAGSM some kind of in-joke or an actual worthwhile mod? Diable too, it doesn't seem to be updated but I remember hearing questionable things about it a couple of years ago.

It might have been a balance thing I was hearing about then, my memory's foggy.
Is getting Diable to run on 0.96 just a matter of tweaking the version number?

Apparently, though yeah its been a bit beat up. The higher end mechs in Diable are still fun to use on a carrier but you really need to cheat it a bit with their current costs.

Missing ships mod is very janky, pretty unbalanced and shitty in general. Would never ever recommend anyone to use this mod.

Legacy of Arkgneisis has mostly overpowered weapons and is kind of buggy.

Ashes of the Domain has dangerous levels of ESL speak, I don't know how nobody ever was like "hey this writing / grammar / spelling is atrocious" and helped the guy fix it.
Aside from that it's a weird mod in general, the research thing sounds maybe ok on paper but in practice it results in you just not being able to use a kind of industry until you find the tech data thing. It also completely ruins the colony item system because the unupgraded base industries can't use items, and the max upgrade industries can't use them either. It throws that system out of the window and I don't see why. And it adds a bunch of super high end industries but I don't get the point since they produce things that aren't in demand by any faction bases, so their exports make no money.

Stop Gap Measures exclusively adds dogshit ships since that's its theme, resulting in AI fleets being bloated with patheticly weak ships. No point in using it.

All the Domain Drones+ has overpowered large ballistic HE weapons and fighters (see

      [...]
I mean look at this shit. So much range, dps, flux efficiency and an insanely high per shot damage making it very strong vs armor. There's never a reason to use a large HE ballistic other than these two.

), but I like it otherwise. It's probably worth fixing with some csv edits since it's just a few things.

What's a decent way to play the early game and not get raped by pirates and shit? Nexe if that matters
I only got in one battle and instantly lost a ship

      Anonymous

If you want to not get raped by pirates, stay away from them. Use emergency burn if you need to. If you need to trade with a pirate station, do it while going dark so the pirate fleets don't see you in the first place. There's a few in asteroid belts where you are basically undetectable while going dark.

As for actually accomplishing anything, you can make money with missions like spysat deployment and the other delivery thing. Or you can sell drugs in places where they are high in demand, see the part about approaching stations while going dark.
You can also be a scavenger and salvage debris and derelict ships after battles. The easiest way to do this is by going to a system with warring factions or with an active bounty, which usually indicates a large hostile presence.

        Anonymous

Yeah but hoow do i Do that when I can't win a fight at all?

          Anonymous

Sorry I should have been more clear, you wait for two fleets to fight each other, hence the part where you go to a system with factions that are at war with each other. Ideally you would be on decent terms with one of the factions so you can join the battle and get a bit of XP and post battle salvage. Either way, there's a high chance of derelict ships appearing on the map after a battle, which you can either scrap or use yourself.

What's the best way to stop getting other fleets to frick with me endlessly? Everything but shuttles is super expensive

              Anonymous

If you don't want fleets flying at you, try to not be in a system where hostile factions have a station. It will keep spawning small scout fleets which are quite territorial.
Since you're using Nex, you might have accidentally started with a faction that everyone hates, you can check the intel screen to see what other factions think of you. Factions at hostile (-50 relations) or worse will attack you while factions at -50 to -25 relations won't attack you, but they won't let you trade at their stations.

If want to just avoid combat, you should be fast enough to avoid pretty much anything if you only have small ships, just make sure that you have sustained burn on. Or if you want to be near them without getting attacked, use "go dark" in an asteroid belt. If a fleet gets close to you, a little indicator will appear around you to show the range at which you can be detected.

      >Non-Combat Smuggler route (no Mods required):
Collect around 5~10 Hounds (any variant) and mod them as in pic, so that their speed goes over 220; usually D-mods doesn't matter. How disengagement works in this game is based on the fleet's combat speed (not Burn speed), so for most encounters (including late game ones) you can disengage without any issue. With a fleet of hounds you can ignore pirates and safely smuggle between their black markets and legal markets of civilized worlds stacking up cash for a colony or better ships.
You can also do this for exploration too, but I advised to bring a "militarized + SO'd" Dram acting as a fuel carrier for the hounds.

      >Combat route
This largely depends on the mods you put in, and other shit like commission or you role-playing as a boy scout not using the black market. In vanilla generally you want to collect frigates and destroyers that can stand on their own without escorts in the early game. Good contenders are Hammerheads, Wolves, Shrikes, Lashers. Hammerheads in particular good ship for you to learn combat. You can also pirate a Wolf to distract some ships to follow you while your fleet can pickoff the rest (this gets better if you get a Monitor later)
One thing to remember is that pirate ships like Cerberus do not have shields by default, so they're easy pickings for you (study the codex or wiki for each ships traits).

        Anonymous

Based. I do the same thing with both the Hound and Cerberus. Cerberus is 33% more maintenance but 33% more base cargo and fuel capacity so costs are basically the same.

          >Revenant phase tender
Best shit about the Revenant: if it's the only phase ship in the fleet and if you put a phase anchor in it, it cannot die in combat! So it's great for solo smuggling. You'll lose around 20 crew everytime though.

Bullshit your way into a few good ships using quests, then bully pirates for junkpile salvaged ships you can throw at progressively stronger enemies until you're able to actually make money and get something decent.

Buying drugs and selling them to pirate stations in need (hover over them and push F1), then flying to planets marked (Military) and buying ships off the black market is a good start.

Closest I can think of is the special Dustkeeper start from SOTF. Otherwise the closest thing I can think of is something the dev for DEX talked about with wanting to make a quest that has you steal ID codes to take control of the drones.

Of course knowing that guy no telling if that will ever amount to anything.

It's recommended to at least know Flux Dissipation vs Weapon Flux ratio as a mechanic. As a general rule, especially if it's going to be piloted by an NPC, you want the Weapon Flux/Sec rate as close to the Dissipation rate. There's a lot of asterisks & exceptions that you can learn later (i.e. Super High Capacitor Total, Ignoring rates for Point Defense Weapons, etc), but if you don't want your fleet to get overloaded and die try to match dissipation and weapon flux.

You should also learn each damage types as well, and how to use missiles.

      Anonymous

Standard fits are okay but you have to check to make sure autofit was able to get all the weapons and hullmods it wanted for a fit. If the right weapons are unavailable it will try to go for the closest match which sometimes works out and sometimes sucks.
It's worth spending time playing around in the sim to experiment with your own builds so you understand how your ships handle with different hullmods and flux setups. Don't sell weapons, stockpile them somewhere like the abandoned terraforming platform in Corvus and eventually you'll have every weapon you could ever need for a build.

      Anonymous

in almost every case you will not have the exact weapons the setup wants to use so you will end up with all kinds of wacky loadouts

The "lore" of the game states the cores have to be put in giant baths to function and the nanoforges build their own infrastructure. Both require a bit more than a small box on a shelf.

Well for one thing you need some more combat ships if you're going to be fighting them instead of running from them. I think your biggest ship there is a destroyer class mech.

            Anonymous

It's mostly just a bunch of frigates with regards to the combat ships yeah, that and one carrier thingy. The Yuri frigate with the ballistic shield has been putting in work. But I'll be honest, it's hard to figure out where to actually buy decent ships, almost all the ones I find are damaged and I don't know enough about the combat system to determine when/if I should deviate from the stock designs (so I just carry around every gun I loot). I just founded my first colony so I'm still waiting on the income there to start, and I'm not really sure how to use any of the Nexerelin shit - I'm ostensibly part of ArmA but outside of starting off in their sector and with good relations I haven't seen any indication of that.

Outside of that money is a perpetual problem because it only comes in bursts from very long scanning missions or in tiny trickles from the occasional trade/salvage profit.

Have... you actually beat the story and stuff as it stands with 100% vanilla?
Modded ships by default have fricked loadouts and should not be trusted (hell, a bunch just straight up don't have loadouts) and you should really go through the game once without mods (not even nex) other than like speedup. You really do NOT have the fleet to have a colony. You're asking for pain on top of pain.

                Anonymous

                >Have... you actually beat the story and stuff as it stands with 100% vanilla?
No, I put like 50 hours into it vanilla a couple of years back and don't actually remember it having any sort of story.

                Anonymous

What did you do during that 50 hours? The reason for asking about doing the story as it stands is because it takes you actually engaging with the game a bit and making a decent enough fleet able to get through some tough scraps and/or use the game mechanics o work around them. Using mods on a game you don't understand is only going to cause problems. I would highly suggest either making a new save (if you use SMOL for mods you can just make a new profile easily) or at the very least doing some of the missions on the main menu.
Using mechs when you don't understand the combat system is asking for brutality. They are glass cannons.

Pretty sure that was in like 2018 or 2019 so like I said, foggy. I remember having a lot of money and some territory and a big fleet but never tinkering much with the ship designs myself and just using basic refits for everything, and remember burning out because it was kind of trivial at that point.
                >or at the very least doing some of the missions on the main menu.
I glanced at those but I'll be honest I'm extremely shit at manual piloting so I didn't feel like they'd be very fun since that looks like what they're there to test.

I'm awful at the combat but you're going to have to learn somehow just how awful you are yourself and midway in a modded run when you don't even understand how to fit ships is just asking for straight up pain.

Yeah I could maybe restart but if I play 100 hours on vanilla I'm going to burn the frick out before having the passion for a modded playthrough and then I'll be back here in the exact same boat in 2026. It's not like I'm not savescumming the shit out of everything as is, I haven't technically lost a battle in about 5 hours on this character if you don't count the one G-Hazard that manages to explode every single engagement.
As far as I can tell it's not like there's any form of formal tutorial for fleet shit anyway so I'd just be doing the same thing I'm already doing and stumbling blindly through it.

They're genuinely useless. The only scenario where they don't get pulverized immediately is when they go 1v1 against a ship that completely lacks any sort of PD. Just sell them and get a Leynos or an additional VX Custom instead.

I tried strafe locking, but it felt weird to keep on pressing shift to unlock it. The default pressing shift down and release felt more natural/faster to me.

Also I felt at the time it was more important to learn the basics, rather than breaking into the enemy line and try to go around their shields. The default is better when doing something like an afflictor assassin run.

Maybe, but I played a shitton of Bannerlord doing nothing but painting the map while doing the same "F2 and run in a circle with horse archers" strat. Same with Total War, every time I play a faction that isn't about setting up a massive gun line and AFKing it's a miserable experience.
Also the Command Point system feels insanely limiting in practice, if I'm only controlling one ship at a time and can't do anything beyond "hey everyone kill this guy" every few minutes then it seems like focusing so much on piloting that one shit is dubiously useful.

The difference is that Starsector isn't M&B or Total War. Flying a ship and shooting other ships is just really fun in this game. It also makes it more interesting when you find a new ship or new weapons, as it's not just a slight increase to your fleet strength but a new toy to play with.

Honestly though Arma's biggest appeal aren't the big robots (Mobile Armors) to me, but the little cataphract and striker fleets. The Armors feel more like your default ships, while the small ones actually expand the gameplay. They need to nerf curvy laser though.

The Wingcom stuff is what does it for me. I've used it with just broadswords and whatnot and had a lot of fun. I prefer recruiting my own crew to be officers rather than hiring them. You can change their callsigns and portraits too so it makes it easily customizable.
                >They need to nerf
No, adjust it yourself. Diable died the nerf death, Arma doesn't need to.

Yeah I have no idea how those are supposed to work or how fighters work in general (pretty sure they're autopiloted like weapons launched from carriers?) but they sound really fun.

Fighters from carriers work off a regroup/engage command. When you target an enemy then engage they will beeline for it.
                >This works outstandingly well with cheap as frick Valk Ps from Arma (5 cost) with their swords and even better with Valk EX's (11 cost) They also work great as PD in regroup mode.
Recall fighters ability on carriers is a great way to also have more flexible control especially with glass cannon mechs. Alestes cost a lot to field (21 each iirc) so its nice to use those + recall.

So is it a viable tactic to turn any battlefield into a hornet's nest of Valks?

                Anonymous

Fighter spam is a bread and butter move that keeps getting nerfed in vanilla so modded far superior mechs makes it pretty viable.

Yes but your computer will hate you for it regardless of hardware. The game just can' handle it and breaks down. An early game tactic I use is smol 1-2 slot carriers with valk Ps until I can start fielding Valk EXs (the ship form) with their own strikecraft. 20 mechs with swords = death

Don't mind the autism. Unfortunately carriers are very boring to pilot, there isn't really any room for you to do anything. Sometimes the AI puts the carriers way too far in the back so I guess you can do that better. But it really is just pressing R on an enemy ship and then pressing Y.
If you want a ship that is difficult to pilot, get a super close range ship with Safety Overrides. Or maybe a fragile long range support ship like an Atlas MK2, but it can be frustrating if the AI does a bad job at covering you.

It's more fun to fire a torpedo rack than to command a bomber to do it for you, same with firing a weapon instead of having a fighter do it. Carriers are just not very interesting which is probably why His Lord Majesty Alex The Great nerfed them.

Correct, but if I have 15 bombers with 15 torpedo racks and I get the fun of telling them all to fire them, that's more fun than firing one myself.

I'm new to starsector and I've been trying to beat the menu missions before getting into serious >10 campaign playthroughs since I want to focus on combat, but 80% of the battles there feel BS?

For example, "For The Greater Ludd" gives you a Hammerhead, but also a bunch of Carriers that do nothing since the main enemy flagship is covered by support frigates specialized in killing fighter wings. I can manage to solo kill the enemy flagship if I go SO and reserve my two missiles to hit his back, but then the remaining frigates manage to kill my other ships and outpace me, finally kiting my armor-deprived hammerhead to death. Piranha bombers seem only useful for taking some armor off their flagship, but other than that they are just floating hitboxes against faster frigates. Carrier fleets now seem frustrating to play with.

Besides the first two missions, I only managed to beat Forlorn Hope and Ambush so far (both on first try too), which kinda leads me to believe the specified difficulties on the missions are a complete lie. Thoughts?

      Anonymous

Carriers were fricking massacred awhile ago, so it's not surprising you can't beat it.

A lot of the missions are outdated, some can be labeled as "Easy" and be very hard or the other way around becouse some ships/weapons were either nerfed or boosted from earlier versions, for example, carriers used to be a lot more OP than now (or so i've been told)

Yeah from my newbie perspective, honestly the way carriers are designed feels counterintuitive from a mechanical standpoint. Their fighter wings are meant to attack then fly away/respawn and resupply. It's seems like they were originally intended for a "chip damage", "outsustain" playstyle, but wouldn't dragging the fight for too long decrease your own ships' battle readiness and worsen the fighter wings too?

If in that mission I had two wolves instead of three carriers, the amount of concentrated firewer would be easily enough to match the enemy's, all the while having a lower resource usage and DP.

          Anonymous

try to fit one or two claw wings/thunders in the fleet, the emp can easily cripple frigate PD for the other fighters to come in, or invert how you play that mission, use the SO hammerhead to catch the frigates

            Anonymous

Well I'm gonna try the EMP strategy, I didn't get to use this mechanic yet. If I try to catch the frigates first though, the AI usually does hit-and-run maneuvers that despite my Hammerhead winning, it leads me away astray the battle and the enemy flagship manages to do a breakthrough to capture the objetives, worsening the carriers' performance even more

          Anonymous

          >It's seems like they were originally intended for a "chip damage", "outsustain" playstyle

There's a variety of different fighter types. Torpedo bombers are probably the best off atm since they can just fire free, infinite (but slower to come out over time) high damage missiles from standoff range before returning to rearm, with EMP-spam fighters (as good EMP weapons are generally opportunistic, low-range weapons - fitting for fighters) close behind. Both of which are actually best used as safe, disposable, "burst" weapons. Using fighters to wear enemies down and maintain shield pressure is what the developers murdered, and it leaves things like Perdition bombers in a really awkward spot where they are literally only useful against shieldless, PD-less cruisers/capitals.

          >but wouldn't dragging the fight for too long decrease your own ships' battle readiness and worsen the fighter wings too?

Yes. Carriers respawn fighters slower the longer they sustain casualties. They can only recover the respawn rate by sitting on standby for awhile, which forces all fighters to orbit the carrier and defend it with PD weapons.

I actually did it with base loadout since I assume tutorials must also be outdated due to balance changes. The trick is to sacrifice your armor to facetank and destroy the Onslaught early on, after that every other ship gets almost insta-destroyed by your autofire as you keep backing away to space their fleet.

Hey guys I'm the anon from thank you for all the tips back then. After beating other missions I jumped into the campaign but I was caught up doing scan and spy quests so my fleet turned out to be considerably lighter with two Phase frigates plus Wolf and Shrike.

In my second battle I was pursued by a pirate 8-fleet with a couple of lvl5 commanders and lotsa Underworld ships. Needless to say, it was hard to win (out of ~27 tries I got about 4 flawed victories and one lossless picrel), but I believe most of the difficulty came down to managing the Shrike, which felt like one less ship for 2/3 of the battle.

When the battle starts I pick Afflictor because then I can overwhelm one pirate "Predator" Wolf early, by far the most dangerous entity in this battle. My other two frigates focus on the second Wolf and I hope they win as I go deeper into the battlefield to draw aggro from the Mule flagship and escort. The main problem is the AI on the Shrike, while unassigned it stood out of battle the entire time as if being piloted by a cautious officer. I have very few command points early game, so I can rarely assign individual pick out orders, but otherwise thee Shrike AI just refuses to engage by itself. I had to spend one command point to get it to eat the damage from a Gremlim drifting by and another one to make sure it went to tank the flagship. Is it a problem with the loadout even though everyone uses similar weapons? Or is the AI just shit with this ship?

Also my all-energy ships couldn't defeat the Mule even though we all ganged up on it lol so I had to "claim victory" and let it escape to beat it in auto battle

The actual market item heavy armaments. Pathers always want them especially on new games.

It's more fun to fire a torpedo rack than to command a bomber to do it for you, same with firing a weapon instead of having a fighter do it. Carriers are just not very interesting which is probably why His Lord Majesty Alex The Great nerfed them.

Why not both? Thats what you keep missing.

I think you should drop some of the pd weapons (probably all except the front 2) and get a dedicated targeting core, otherwise your big gun won't really be able to shoot anything. And it looks a little heavy on HE damage, unless those fighters only do kinetic

How about some Wanzers? I'm still pretty early game (literally level 1) so I don't really have any skills to let me maybe cram more shit in. Not sure how effective that mortar is when I was thinking of using it mostly as a carrier, but it probably won't hurt.

No gantry option that I can see.
I tried the mortar and it doesn't seem great, plus if I let the AI engage it seems very averse to closing distances at all, which makes sense considering the thing is a carrier that flies like a brick.
Dropped it to put some more PD and a couple of basic missile batteries on. I might actually go so far as to drop the interceptor wing for another wanzer, because the two Avalanches I have party extremely hard.

Personally I think you wasted your money if this is what you are going to do with it. You could just use a regular Collosus Mk. III and give it a bunch of small guns to shoot the hell out of frigates while it spams fighters all over the place.

Yeah but I don't know what a Colossus Mk III is or where to find one. :^)

Lunchbox is a kitbashed Collosus Mk III. You will only find them reliably through salvage either by destroyed pirate fleets or RNG.

The distance issue is because you gave it a gun with long enough range. The default Ai is steady so get used to that behavior. You need aggressive officers if you want anything more then that.

                Anonymous

Is that right? I've had a bunch of carriers with either purely medium range or purely long range loadouts and the AI didn't really like getting either one into actual shooting range.

That is because the steady behavior is to edge around the enemy's own attack range vs their own unless you already have a decisive advantage like superior numbers. They will almost never use anything that is too out of sync with the longest ranged gun they have btw. Aggressive behavior is to go right in and be a lot less mindful of enemy attack range.

If I remember right Diable might have changed it so that only certain ships have gantries instead of you adding it like you would a wingcom suite now that I think about it.

give it a large missile launcher because it is not going to want to be within its optimal range if it’s equipped with a gun
using missiles would let it be more useful from a distance where it’s not in immediate danger

Personally I think you wasted your money if this is what you are going to do with it. You could just use a regular Collosus Mk. III and give it a bunch of small guns to shoot the hell out of frigates while it spams fighters all over the place.

Never used colossus mk3? This is ~1.5 colossus at 2 twice the DP, without the ground attack buff, civhull and with AAF as system and different mount

The backend for making new ships is incredibly easy, you can do it with notepad and excel.

The backend for dialog chains and scripting varies between 'lol hope you know how to compile your own jars looser' at best to 'an unholy burning frick-frick monument of incompetent autism that fails at everything it sets out to be' at worst.
Thus, despite amounting to some basic scripting and unengaging text-boxes, modding in quests is vastly more difficult than making ships, weapons, or even entire factions, despite those on paper having way more stuff that goes into them.

Thus, modders follow the path of least resistance and avoid rules.csv like the plauge.

From what I've been told, the way Starsector is coded makes things like Rules.csv an absolute nightmare. It's only just recently that mods are starting to put some semblance of a campaign into their factions and chances are they're sharing the method with each other to make the process easier.

          He listened to the discord.

It originally started as a mod for the the Orks from 40K, was doing quite well, people liked it and, most importantly, it was fun. It was gaining traction.

Then they started scaring him that GW were going to issue a takedown, They convinced him that removing the references wouldn't be enough and he would have to change all his sprites, and of course, they would 'help out' 'for free' if he came to the discord. So being plucky and naive he went to the discord and went along with their plan

First they changed his spirtes - and he didn't speak out
Then they added their scripts - and he didn't speak out
Then they changed his lore - and he didn't speak out
Then they rebalanced his mod and he realized he no linger had control

So he tried to bid the discord adieu, and saw the nature of the beast. They 'reminded' him that their sprites, scripts and lore were their own protected works and he couldn't use them without their permission, if he left the discord and continued development without them they would get his mod taken down and (potentially) sue him. So now, our Bultach bro is stuck in discord hell working damage control on his labor of love under the watchful eyes of the discord of heathens who have assumed control and don't want his mod straying from the vision they set out.

          Rules of Acquisition - 218:
Sometimes what you get for free costs entirely too much.

Worse, the Conquest-tier shield makes it fricking useless in AI hands because it will scurry away like a rat and refuse to engage.

Perhaps it should be indicative of even before making bomb-launched ships became a fad, a bunch of modders rushed at the chance to make "Retribution but good".

The one from DEX remains my favorite of that, because despite the moronic name that machine was made for dual forward hammer barrages and then dying in the backblast because it has no shield. Perhaps machines aren't all Servants of Moloch after all.

hello to all my fellow Armabros or just Mechbros in general, i updated my audio plus but mechs with new tracks and some volume changing here and there.

short example of new shit includes:

    - Added Shining Call Me Again USUDA campaign overworld non-core level only
    - Added Break point MIDI campaign overworld level
    - Added Brandnew AC Runs About to combat level
    - Added ArtificialSkyII Orchestral USUDA to hyperspace level

i've added a dozen more tracks and compressed them for epic 3mb vram gains.

        changes since V1.1

        - Readded weapon sounds to keep the universe from ripping itself apart (and probably will keep them)
        - Changed the mod_info to represent my autism a little more.

TL;DR here's the link for the good stuff. should be all fixed now.

At what financial status do you usually start moving into colonies or more organized fleet actions as opposed to randomly doing whatever bounties pop up?

      Anonymous

its less financial and more fleet to defend it for me.
I need at least 1 million spare + a decent equipped fleet and at least a few planets in a system that has a food world.

      Anonymous

If you find a really good system you might as well just colonize it as soon as you can, it will generate profit almost instantly. There's basically no reason not to as long as you have the bare minimum required to colonize and maybe build a patrol HQ.
Otherwise I would rather spend my money on ships until I'm up to a comfortable fleet with a good flagship, maybe 1-2 capitals, ~5 cruisers and a bunch of destroyers and frigates. Once I'm at that point I'll go on exploration missions if a good opportunity presents itself

      Anonymous

I scavenge during the bounty hunts and exploration missions for indurstry parts while also looking for habitable systems. When I have a few million credits and a good system picked out I move onto colony management. Then I realise I don't have nearly enough special parts or AI cores or blueprints to make non shitty fleets and I stop playing.
Being a rogue captain sailing the galaxy and going on adventures is the best part, having to babysit a moneyprinter is just boring.

        Anonymous

Colonizing so late makes it a money sink that only produces money, which is kind of pointless.
Try building up heavy industry earlier, so you can actually use the ship production to improve your fleet. It also gives you an objective to work towards: stealing a pristine nanoforge and not dying in the process or aftermath.

persean space refers to the entire sector, it's the persean sector, PL only took it's name.

Technically no, but there is a workaround:
You can add a weapon to the base hull by creating a ship file with just the mount. Make its type decorative so it's inactive.

Then you can activate it in your skin file by changing the type to something more useful.

If this is your final choice go for the one with the more resource variety as that will give you more credit even with the +50% hazard rating. You're not going to put high maintenance industry on a habitable world anyway. But as this

Shit worlds without nanite enriched food

guy said, try to look for a better one without transplutonics if you can for your bread basket world.

Even vanilla has like these kind of world with in a gated system (PIC), so it always pays to look for more. Also don't let the Terran categories fool you; sometimes tundra and arid with solar arrays might be near perfect with low hazards.

ok they aren't too bad but i'm a little sad how they massacred my combat stims (i love my combat drugs)

                - Valkazard now has innate +30% refit rate penalty
(can anyone explain what does this mean exactly?)

                - Syko Stims

                - Increased Time Dilation amount to 3x, but reduced duration to 0.7s
                - Increased cooldown: 5s -> 20s
                - fixed potential memory leak

also the aleste has unironically been destroyed as far as i can see
                - Aleste
                - Left arm is now locked to Laser Blade

Starsector isn't witchcraft, it just crashed because the .wpn files in Audio Plus specify a sound effect which you presumably deleted in your version. Don't worry about it crashing again in the future as long as either all the files are there or you just remove the .wpn files which point to them.

Black person frick you Alex actually delivered this time and you will not discredit him. The slipstream abilities sound like they will finally make hyperspace travel interesting and the colony crises look like a massive upgrade over the current system, which frankly kind of sucks. And the rest of the changes is good too. Frick you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's exactly the point, hyperspace is boring and this update has a decent chance at making it fun. I like the idea of creating slipstreams to ride around the sector at 40 speed.

The problem is that it becomes a useless annoying mechanic once you reactivated the gates. It's still kinda relevant if you're still exploring for more parts for your dream colony or a blueprint to produce. Also doesn't help that you don't really need a big combat capable fleet to finish the Galatia questline (just a SO'd Dram if you're rushing it).

I was under the impression that it was designed that way on purpose since Black Market shit is dodging the customs checks and logistical processes that get things into the hands they need to be in. Personally I'd just separate black market and clear market demand entirely but that feels a bit bloaty.

That is a silly sentiment. Major routing behavior of the game's AI purely because of a range difference when no shots are even fired as soon as the battle starts is the exact opposite thing you want for a game where you only manually control yourself and not your dudes.

autist incapable of understanding nuance, only black and white may exist. no aesthetic sense, no ability to understand the value of an aesthetic sense. akin to a color blind man who thinks not seeing a color means he's smart, since he doesn't go around caring about the color, which obviously does not matter as it doesn't exist.

i could explain to you why the versimilitude of the game world works in concert with the raw game mechanics to create an experience that is more than the sum of its parts, but it would be like trying to explain why an artists usage of red enhances his paintings to, again, a color-blind man. however, the simile has a big issue - it would be possible if the disabled man were an honest an inquisitive type, while the autistic are fundamentally incapable of understanding a different mind, this being the core morbidity of the disease.

hopefully this explanation was more useful for you than explaining why a game has fine graphics, a plot, story or setting, sound effects and music in the first place (most people understand these things intuitively).

the problem is that the changes are, individually, correct as they have to correct for previous mistakes. ideally many weapon buffs should be reverted and the whole thing reoriented around some stable point, such as the 10 OP 1.0 efficiency 333 DPS pulse laser being a viable average weapon, axiomatically.

but ideal things are rarely practical, so ahead with go with the readjustment to 0.8 eff being typical.

Cool. I like stuff like that. The talon rails are fun for example. Need one that just shoots a neverending stream of Valk Ps. Still going to wait awhile since I'm in the middle of a campaign.

They're still a bit fragile and can be destroyed easily before they can unload the strikecraft, and have an annoying tendency to prevent the battle from ending, even with the enemy fleet destroyed, until their hull slowly drain to zero and they "retreat". This only happens some times, though.

I blame alex for the crashing.

You are supposed to play with vanilla ships and weapons to defeat modded ones, not use them.

I love the long range long cooldown massive damage guns on the UNSC ships but they are really ugly to look at. Any other long range faction mods ?

Can someone smarter tell me how range increase bonuses factor in for Safety Override range reductions? Are officers with Elite Integrated Point Defenses and/or Cybernetic Implants for extra range going to be useful for piloting SO ships or is it a waste of skill slots?

      Anonymous

The SO range modification is applied after the everything else, so any range bonuses are pretty useless.
SO reduces range beyond 450 to 25%, so any range increase is also only 25% as useful assuming your weapons have more than 450 range.
      1000 range becomes 450 + (550 * 0.25) = 587.5
      A 10% bonus increases the pre-SO range to 1100, but then becomes 450 + (650 * 0.25) = 612.5
      Basically, it's not very good.

By the way, there's a mod which dynamically adjusts the range tooltips of weapons, Unthemed Weapons Collection: https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=27074.0
I don't know why the author combined that utility with a miscallaneous weapon mod, but if you don't care for the weapons you can just download the utility from the second download option.
Pic related is with SO, before and after installing a dedicated targeting unit. As expected the range is only increased by 1000*0.35*0.25 = 87.5 and not 1000*0.35 = 350.

Well thanks that explains a lot. I will be getting this mod for sure. I guess Unstable Injector is just better if I want speed + range without limiting the latter too much, especially on destroyers since SO loses the softcap past frigates

The hammerhead is not going to lose out by being an SO ship. The only problems I can foresee is if you don't have aggressive/reckless officers if it is a bot ship.

            Anonymous

The Hammerhead is indeed made for SO as you say but I was planning to try out a Manticore officer loadout this time, and that ship is specifically valued for its extra range innate hullmod, so it's not something to sacrifice to such extents

It's not just QoL and it shouldn't break any mod compatibiliy and if anything it would be useful to release a beta version so mod developers can update their mods before the final release THOUGH

Off the top of my head the added pirate policy interactions and reworked insurrections are going to glitch mods like Nexerelin and IndEvo the hardest so at the very least don't count on porting saves; Alex also said the update will probably be renamed to .97 due to the relevant amount of changes

            Anonymous

Does it really glitch Nex or IndEvo? Nex' interaction with hostile activity is already kind of fricked as sending a strike fleet to a pirate base doesn't lower hostile activity. And now hostile activity score won't be as relevant anymore, so the patch might actually improve the interaction with Nex.

I was curious so I looked at what happened on the 0.96a release, and most mods just kept working. Some broke because Alex did a little trolling and changed function signatures by adding parameters without providing a backwards compatible function with a default value for the new parameter. Yeah Java sucks. To be precise, Alex fricked showCustomDialog() so every mod with a custom UI just broke. He also renamed some other variables from what I can see.
Anyway, the point is that on this patch, none of that is happening as far as I can see. And even on 0.96a it took very little time for mods to get fixed, for example the stable release of Nex was done 9 days after the patch dropped. If something does break and the modder disappears I can just fix it myself, I will definitely not be waiting for months either way.

Eagle is the only thing that is recommended for long range ballistics because it has nothing better to do with its three hard points at the front but the Eagle is old and busted compared to the Champion new hotness. It is genuinely not worth your time unless you got RNG lucky.
